Senior Students Attending Classes at St Dominic’s:
This year a number of senior students from both schools will be taught in the other school. This is restricted to two subjects for each student at the other school. The reason for the co-operation between both schools is to give all senior students greater opportunity to have their choice of subjects. More efficient use of our combined teaching resources has enabled more stu-dents to avoid subject clashes in the timetable. The Year 13 Deans at both schools have been working with the students to en-sure a smooth transition.
Year 8 Camp:
The Year 8 students attended the annual camp at Finley Park Camp at Karapiro. The lovely summer weather helped to make the week a successful one - for staff and students alike! I wish to thank Mr Lord and his team for the thorough organisation and supervision. I also wish to acknowledge the parents who gave up their time to assist with the camp. Thanks very much.
Polyfest:
This year Liston College will compete in the ASB Polyfest. We have entered in the Tongan competition. Mr Fotu who has re-cently joined the Mathematics Department and Geoff Thomas – an Old Boy – will be ensuring that the cultural group is well prepared to represent the College.
Powhiri:
Mr Swann organised the Powhiri for new students and staff. It was great to see so many parents were able to attend this im-portant event. This year Ryan O’Hanlon – an Old Boy who has joined the teaching staff this year, spoke on behalf of the Manuhiri. Ryan is one of 7 Old Boys who are on the teaching staff.
PTFA – and New Parents’ BBQ:
Each year the PTFA organise a BBQ for parents new to the school, or parents whose son is new to the school. This will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18th February. I look forward to meeting you then.
Gala: HELP!
The PTFA is busy organising the annual Gala. This year it will be held on Saturday 15th March. If you are able to assist the PTFA with the planning and organisation of this event it would be most appreciated. Please contact the school office and your details will be passed to Yvonne Wood the PTFA Chairperson.
Athletics Days:
Mr Borich is currently organising the annual Athletics Days which will be held on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st February. This event is one of the highlights of the year and is very important in helping to build school spirit – and Inter-House competition! This is a reminder to ensure that your son has protection from the sun. All students are given full instructions on the require-ment for the two days to ensure they are sun-smart. You are most welcome to come and join us.
Welcome Back:
We welcome back Mr Worth who has been absent from school since the beginning of November. He is now fully recovered from his surgery - and definitely more mobile!

BEING LIMITED
How often do we feel in need of something or someone to turn to, to ask help from, just to be there when we need a helping hand or word of encouragement—but we don’t take the step and ask for help? And we end up staying in our depression, our loneliness, our frustration, our helplessness, our self-pity, our hurt. We need to realise that people aren’t insensitive to our needs, only unaware of them. If we are too proud to share them, whose fault is that? We don’t want to believe we are limited, so we hide away in some safe world of self-pity or boredom. There’s no shame in admitting our shortcomings, our needs, our weaknesses. Others are prepared to help us if only we make our needs known. Even Jesus needed someone to help him carry his cross. It takes trust, even humility to stretch out our hand for assistance, to share a problem. So what— if it gets us back on an even keel where we can see the sun and not the gloom, feel the warmth and not the cold? It isn’t a crime to complain; it isn’t a crime to be needy. The only crime is to allow the need to become an excuse for not living. We are all limited in some way. We all need to stretch out our hand for help at some time or other. Just do it. ELECTRONIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS
Fr Kevin Murphy SM, our College Chaplain is running again in the first term of 2014 the Sacramental Programme for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion (First Eucharist) Reconciliation and Confirmation. If any student wishes to enrol in the programme,
please give your name to Mrs Cathrine Skelton, our DRS.
The programme takes place in period 5 on Mondays and the Sacraments will be celebrated by Bishop Patrick Dunn on Liston Day in May, in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The young men in the programme over the last few years have really enjoyed the programme. Families are also involved.

Can you please remember to name your son’s uniform. It is difficult to locate and identify the owner of clothing when, for example, it has been left on the field or under a table in the classroom.
Thank you for your assistance to reduce the loss of garments at the school and saving stress for both the boys and their parents.

Parents/Caregivers who are picking up students after school,
please remember that as from 3pm no vehicles are allowed into the school grounds.
This is to safeguard our students who are usually running to catch buses and also gives the buses clear access into the school to pick up our boys. It is an extremely hazardous time and we are trying to minimise the risk of accidents occurring on the school grounds. It is only for a short period of time, please do not be offended if you come to the entrance at 3pm and you are not allowed to enter.
This is a Health and Safety directive to ensure our boys are kept safe.

POWHIRI PHOTOS
YEAR 8 CAMP 2014
The Year 8 camp was held at Finlay Park, Lake Karapiro. It was a 2 hour bus ride from Liston College. We stopped at Hamilton Gardens for lunch and a run about to let off some energy and to enjoy the beautiful gardens! When we arrived, we unloaded the buses, and then had free time which was one of the highlights.
There were so many fun activities to do on camp. There was a massive water slide and outdoor swimming pool to enjoy. There were also night activities, glow worms and spot light orienteering.
We had lovely weather all week on camp and we celebrated Waitangi Day with another day of fun filled activities. On Friday, we cleaned up and came home.
Year 8 camp was a great experience, I enjoyed it and I’m sure everyone else did too.
On behalf of all the Year 8 students we would like to thank all the teachers and parents who came and helped out on the camp. A great start to 2014!

As you know, 2014, is a special milestone in Liston College's young history, namely it's 40th birthday. To acknowledge this unique anniversary, the Liston College Old Boys Association ("OBA"), intends to run a number of social events throughout the year beginning with a limited overs cricket tournament on Sunday 23 February 2014 at 11am.
All former students, teachers and friends of the college are invited. It is not necessary for a former student to have attended all of their secondary school education at Liston College. Further, all former students are welcome, even those who may have left the school recently. There is a $10 fee for those who wish to play and there will be a sausage sizzle and drinks for sale, but do feel free to bring your own picnic basket and drinks for an afternoon of entertaining cricket.
If you know anyone who would like to get involved as a member of the committee please contact Peter Fuiava on 302-8454.
There is much work to do and this is an excellent opportunity for you to get in early and help build the Association from the ground floor up.

Alphaeus Ang (Year 7) is taking part in the upcoming inaugural NZ Sudoku Championship that are being held during the NZ Mindsports Festival in Thames, 28Feb-2Mar2014. Alphaeus is the top seed.
BEST WISHES TO...
Christian Brothers Cricket Week / Jan 2014 15 Liston cricketers, accompanied by a strong group of supporters/ including staff/parents and ex Liston 1st XI boys, travelled to Brisbane for the bi-annual CBCW on the 13th Jan.
The boys played 5 round robin 50/50 matches in brilliant 30+ sunshine and remained unbeaten going into the Final of the CUP draw v St Pius XI from Sydney. Despite the loss in that match, it has been the most successful Cricket Tour to travel to Australia.
Luke Devereaux, who topped both the batting and bowling averages for Liston, was picked to represent the Australasian CBCW 2014 XI (again the first Liston cricketer to be included with the best XI from the CBCW tournaments in 37 years)
I would particularly like to thank all those who fundraised for almost 2 years, those parents who came to help support the tour group, and the ex Liston boys who helped train and supervise the group during the 2 weeks ( Ben Lister/Ethan Hunt/Nathan Fletcher)
The boys were great ambassadors for the College in the tournament held at St Joseph’s Nudgee College, N.Brisbane ….and enjoyed the few days following at the Trilogy Apartments in Surfers. The only downside was that we “lost” 3 batsman for 2 months with injuries that has weakened our side going into the PREM A competition. Nevertheless, we wish the 1st XI well in their campaign to remain in Prem A at the conclusion of this year….as in 2015, most of the CBCW tour players from Jan 2014 will still be at Liston.

The year started with a wrap up of the Summer Reading Programme. Nineteen students borrowed 145 books between them over the Christmas holidays. This is the first time that Liston College has run this programme and it is intended to do so again at the end of this year. All students returning to Liston in 2015 will have the opportunity to borrow library books to read over the summer break.
Reading B I N G O
We are starting this term with a Reading BINGO competition for Year 7-10 students. A competition sheet is available from the library. Each student has to read 20 books from different categories. There is a different form for each year level. There will be prizes for those who finish or get the most squares completed. Please encourage your son to come to the library and join in, or just issue a book.

In the next week you should receive an invoice/statement for your sons outstanding fees that will need to be paid. If you have not received any statements at all by the end of February, please contact us so we can send another invoice to you, as sometimes there are postal or address issues.
Discounts:
1. Many of you may want to take advantage of the discount we offer to those who pay for all 2014 fees (Compulsory and Contributions) by the end of Term 1 (April 17th). Discounts offered are:
Year 7 -8 the discount is $70
Year 9 – 13 the discount is $100.
2. Proprietor’s Financial Contribution: If you have a second or third son etc at Liston College the account will be invoiced at the lower rate of $120 for the year. Please check this and let Mrs Muller know if there are any discrepancies.
Tax Receipts:
These will be issued after the 31st March – you will automatically receive one if you have paid for ‘contribution’ fees during the April 13 to March 14 period.
Exam fees: (Year 11-13)
NCEA fees will be invoiced now to help with your budgeting, but are not due yet (final date to be advised). Finan-cial assistance forms will be available next term through Mr Swanink or the school office.
Attendance Dues:
We remind you that this is a compulsory fee and must be paid. Any outstanding fees from 2013 or prior must be paid for promptly to avoid debt collection action. Hardship applications to reduce this fee are available to those who have unanticipated or genuine need, and are handled in confidence.
