Description:
Several years ago, during our Long Service Leave, my wife Ren and I had the opportunity to stay in a monastery in Italy. The following story brought those wonderful memories flooding back to me. The tale speaks of a visitor to a monastery, who noted in the garden there was a freshly dug grave. The visitor asked the monks which member of the community had died recently, and was told ‘Nobody. That grave is for the next one’. Their philosophy was that by living around a visual reminder that life is short, that they would live differently. The graphic prompt would ensure that they lived each day aware of their call to bring about transformation, to contribute in their community, and bring positive change.

It is a good reminder that life is short – and is meant to be a fulfilling adventure. We will all leave it eventually, but the secret is to live it to its fullest whilst we can. One of the College’s missions is to produce kids who are involved and contributing members of the community. We aim to have them develop into change agents in the world and to be builders in their current and future spheres. Sitting back and leaving others to mould their world is not the Cornerstone way. We believe, that as a College, we have the potential to change our community, and to produce students who will leave us and do the same wherever they go. With exciting change and growth ahead, we as an organisation are looking at ways to impact our own region. Clearly, education is our core business and will continue to be so, but in providing an education of excellence, opportunities to learn how to be a world changer are able to be provided. We are grateful for each of your children, and for you as parents, who are part of the Cornerstone family and who can also join with us on this new chapter. We look forward to unfolding, in the years ahead, new ways that with your partnership, we can leave a legacy of blessing to our region. Principal’s PenContributors to CommunitySeveral years ago, during our Long Service Leave, my wife Ren and I had the opportunity to stay in a monastery in Italy.

Iluka Art PrizeCornerstone has done it again! Congratulations to Ashlyn Atkinson, whose recent entry into the prestigious Iluka Art Visions Art Prize won her first place in her division. Her water-colour has delivered her honour and a monetary prize.Cornerstone has an enormous success rate in this regional competition, with our art students performing well above the region’s standards. Well done Ashlyn for a wonderful outcome for your hard work.

Book Character Dress Up Day - PrimaryThe Primary School will be having a Book Character Dress-up Day on Friday September 19th, to raise funds for more class reading books. The students who would like to participate will need to come to school dressed up as their character, be able to name their character, bring the book it comes from and name the author. They will also need to donate a gold coin.A letter is being sent home to parents outlining the rules of participation. Please ensure you read this carefully.Any student not dressing up in character will need to wear their normal school uniform on this occasion.

Primary Music AfternoonOn September 5th, the Primary school (Year 3-6) held a French themed musical afternoon. It was a terrific celebration of the gifts and talents of our Primary students, and an opportunity for them to showcase their skills to their peers and parents. Special thanks to Mrs Heyes

for her organisation of the event. We are very grateful for her contribution to the Primary Arts. 2 & 5 Family Challenge (Primary)Fruit and Veg Month is here. This year we are running two competitions in the Primary School: a Family 2 & 5 Challenge and a Canteen Comedy Competition. To be involved in the 2 and 5 Family Challenge, all family members are encouraged to try and reach the target of consuming 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables per day. Families who reach or nearly reach the target (80% average) will be in the running to win a $100 fruit and vegetable hamper. Competition closes Wednesday 24th September.Secondly, there is the Canteen Comedy Competition (Primary). This year, schools across WA have been invited to compete in this event. To participate, students are asked to write an appropriate and original fruit or vegetable joke. The student who submits the winning joke will receive a $50 Sportspower voucher and go into the state competition to win some new equipment for our canteen. Join in this family fun that will also benefit your health and well-being!

This year our Primary Learning Journey will look a little different. We believe everyone is on a learning journey and so we invite you to celebrate your child’s education and participate in some learning together with your child. When: Thursday 25th SeptTime: 4:30 – 6:00pmFamily BBQ @ 6:00pm with live musicWhat’s going to happen? All primary school teachers will open their classrooms from 4:30pm – 6:00pm. You can come any time and stay as long as you like. This is the time to celebrate your child’s achievements; if you would like to discuss their progress please make an appointment for another time with your child’s teacher. While the classrooms are open a number of workshops will run. You can choose to go to all of them or none of them. It will help us if you can indicate which ones you are interested in. Each workshop will run for approximately 25 minutes. Workshops are for children and adults together. The following topics will be offered:• Games to play with your kids.• Vision and direction of the College• Healthy lunchbox ideas • Internet safety • Making and being friends at school • What is all this God stuff about? This will be followed at 6pm with a Family BBQ (which will be a fund-raiser for Operation Christian Child.) It is necessary to pre-order your sausage and drink. We very much anticipate your attendance at this night of journeying together. Keep an eye out for a response sheet that your child will bring home.

Child Care at Cornerstone?

The College is researching the possibility of offering child-care to parents in the form of Before/After-School Care & Long Day/Vacation Care. Over the years many parents have queried whether we would consider offering this service and our busy lives have made it essential for some.

We’re very early in the planning stage and we’re keen to find out whether parents would actively utilise this facility. With this in mind, we have created a short online survey for you to complete …when life at home isn’t so hectic.

You can type the following link into your internet browser:bit.ly/1qeeeen

OR use your smart phone or tablet to access this QR Code. The information we require is only indicative at present and there is no requirement for you to commit. So, if you want to see these services at Cornerstone please take the few minutes to complete the survey or pass on the links to a friend who may be interested.

Spring is here!Spring has arrived, and the Year 6 class decided to bring proof to school last Monday. The room was filled with flowers the students had collected from their gardens. Not only did the room look great, but it smelt pretty wonderful too. Well done students for showing initiative in helping celebrate the changing of the season.

Men’s HikeBob Cameron has planned a men’s hike for this coming Sunday. They are leaving from the auditorium at noon and returning at about 6 pm, with the intention to hike from Cape Naturaliste lighthouse to Yallingup. All welcome - as long as you are a man! For more information, contact Bob Cameron.

,

Now therefore, do not be afraid. I, will provide for and support you and your little ones, and bring comfort and speak kindly to

your hearts.Genesis 50:21 AMP

End of Year ConcertsPlanning is already underway for our end of year concerts and awards nights.Parents in the Primary school should note one fairly significant change that will occur in 2014.The division of concerts has changed. This year, the Kindy to Year 2 students will have their own concert on Monday Dec 8, and the Year 3 to Year 6 students have their own Awards Night and Graduation on Tuesday Dec 9. The Secondary students will have their Awards and Graduation Night on Wednesday December 10.Please note these dates in your diaries.

Anaphylaxis PolicyThe College has a policy that relates to Anaphylaxis and how we handle the welfare of students with allergens that are harmful to them. This policy, along with many others, are available for view on the College website.A short link can be found here:http://wp.me/P3Wrnd-10w.Check them out today.

Head LiceDon’t forget to check your child’s hair for head lice each Friday afternoon. It’s our way of ensuring that this problem remains a small one!

CanteenThe canteen is desperately in need of assistance. Volunteers parents are what makes the canteen system work, and unfortunately, the numbers of helpers have been dwindling in recent months. There have been occasions that Senior staff have been required to make lunches. Whilst we have leaders with a servant heart, it is not the best way to utilise their skills and so we are asking for anyone, who even on odd occasions may be able to help, to come forward. Please leave your name with the ladies at the front office if you can assist. Thanks in anticipation.

Notification of DepartureDon’t forget......If you are aware that your child will not be returning to Cornerstone in 2015, NOW is

the time to advise us to avoid penalty fees being applied.A full terms notice is required for departure, or the fees for that term will be applied to your account.

Summer Uniforms and HatsWith only a couple of weeks left of term, it is time to order those summer uniform pieces and hats ready for the start of Term 4.The College has a ‘no-hat-no-play’ policy, so it is really important to act now if you need to supply your child with one. Uniform changes also apply as we enter the winter months (particularly for the girls) so please check out the wardrobe today to ensure you are ready to start, stress free, in Term 4.

Volunteer Parents are Wonderful! It has to be said that Cornerstone is incredibly blessed with an amazing team of parents who volunteer in a range of roles. From classroom helpers, to canteen workers - from library sorters, to carnival day scorers - we very much celebrate you all and thank you for your contribution!

Secondary CarnivalCongratulations to Mr cleaver and his team of secondary staff, volunteer parents and students, who helped make last week’s Athletics Carnival such a success. The Weather was perfect and sportsmanship was exemplary. Well done!
