Thursday 5th Year Level Assemblies. 74 Drama Excursion. 2014 NAPLAN Testing Year 7 and 9 students completed the NAPLAN testing over three days last week. Well done to all those students who concentrated well and approached the testing with determination to do their best. The NAPLAN testing also provides students in Year 7 and 9 with the valuable experience of testing under exam conditions. NAPLAN results are provided to the school toward the end of Term 3 and individual student NAPLAN reports will be distributed to families at this time. Students Representing the College Most students are representing the College positively by presenting themselves well in full school uniform each day. There are however still a series of ongoing issues with uniform: some students are wearing the College jumper without a white school shirt underneath, many students are wearing incorrect sport shorts with their sport uniform and many students are still wearing black socks despite constant reminders to wear white. Families are also reminded that girls are expected to wear the winter uniform in these colder months and they should not be wearing tights, leggings or stockings with the summer dress. Please support us in presenting a positive College image by ensuring your child is wearing full and correct school uniform each day. We would like to remind families that students are not to gather or wait to meet friends at the CENTRO shopping centre before or after school. It is also very important that your child does not purchase banned items that are associated with serious health concerns, such as soft drinks, energy drinks or sweets, to bring to school. Newcomb Secondary College places student health as a very high priority and we encourage students to drink water and bring healthy food for snacks and lunch. 2014 NAPLAN Testing Year 7 and 9 students completed the NAPLAN testing over three days last

week. Well done to all those students who concentrated well and

approached the testing with determination to do their best.

The NAPLAN testing also provides students in Year 7 and 9 with the

valuable experience of testing under exam conditions. NAPLAN results are

provided to the school toward the end of Term 3 and individual student

NAPLAN reports will be distributed to families at this time.

College Council The May meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council took place last

Thursday evening. Among the items discussed were the further developments

in our partnership with Deakin University, the future of E Block within our

facilities entitlements and Council membership. Mrs Yvette Ramsay was elected

as the Council Vice-President. We also approved a number of student business

activities, some outdoor education excursions, the Junior Band Camp and the

upcoming trip to Lombok.

Regarding Council Membership; it was noted that we do have places for parent

and community representation so if any parent is interested in being on

Council and would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact

the Principal, Mr Phil Honeywell.

Debutante Ball The 2014 Debutante Ball will be held this Friday evening at the Italian Social

Club, Moolap. The couples have been working hard on their dance routines

under the guidance of Lorrraine and Joe Timpano and I'm sure it will be a

great, fun-filled evening.

Student Absences Parents and Guardians are

required to provide an explanation

for their child’s absences.

In all instances the College

requires the following information:

Child’s name

Home Group or Year level

Date absent

Parent/guardian signature (when

written).

Late Passes The student will need to bring a

note from home and report for a

late pass to the School Office. If

the student has no note, they will

need to go through the same

procedure, however, they will be

placed on detention until a note of

explanation is received.

Leave Passes If it is unavoidable that a student

needs to leave for an appointment,

the student will need to bring a

note of explanation from home to

the School Office before school.

They will be issued with a leave

pass and the teachers will know

that they are absent during that

time.

Uniform Passes If a student is out of uniform they

will need to bring a note from

home and take it to the School

Office before school to be issued a

Uniform Pass. If they have no

explanation they will be placed on

detention until a note is brought.

BUS SERVICES FROM LEOPOLD

McHarry’s has informed us

that there will be some

extended school bus

services from Leopold. We

will notify you in the coming

newsletters when this

occurs.

The areas that will receive new school bus coverage will include:

Estuary Estate along Melaluka Rd (AM & PM)

Allambie Ave/Warrawee Rd area (AM)

Green Acre Drive and Canowindra Way area (AM)

Headspace Geelong is moving. From Monday 19 May 2014 the new office address will be 105 Yarra Street,

Geelong (entry via Little Ryrie Street, between Ryrie and Myers Streets). All other contact details will remain

the same.

DR. JANE GOODALL YOUTH SYMPOSIUM-

“How you can make a difference.”

On Tuesday, 3rd June, 50 Science students (Year 12

Biology and Psychology, Year 11 Biology and Year

9/10 Further Science) will have the opportunity to

attend the Dr. Jane Goodall Youth Symposium at

Costa Hall, Geelong. Dr Jane Goodall is best known

for her work with chimpanzees, conservation and the

environment, a UN Messenger of Peace and founder

of the global youth program, Jane Goodall’s Roots

and Shoots. As part of Dr Jane’s Australian Tour to

celebrate her 80th Birthday, this extraordinary global

leader is visiting our community.

Please check with your child to see if they have an

excursion form for this excursion and ensure forms

are returned to the office by Tuesday, 27th May. If

all seats are not filled by this date, other students will be given the opportunity to attend.

CAREERS IN SPORTS MEDICINE – Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre is conducting an event to

introduce the world of sports medicine for Year 10-12’s. Build aware-ness of the health professionals involved in

caring for athletes, whether competing for Australia or exercise for fitness. Practitioners from sports medicine,

nutrition, podiatry, psychology, massage, physiotherapy and exercise physiology will give short talks.

YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTION FOR YEAR 11 – If you are in Year 10, university may seem a long way

off, but decisions you make now about VCE subjects can affect what you are able to study later. Whether you have

made up your mind about university or are undecided, it’s good to get information now so that you are fully

NEW YORK JAZZ SYMPOSIUM – Students aged 14-17 wantingt to learn from some of the world’s greatest

jazz musicians can join the New York Jazz Symposium at Trinity College (Uni of Melbourne). Carl Allen

(drums), Rodney Jones (guitar), Mat Jodrell (trumpet) and Carla Cook (vocals) will work with passionate

young jazz musicians from around the world. Live on campus at college and form part of an ensemble group, focussing

on jazz performance, hear the journey of a musician, increase confidence to perform, and jam with other

WHAT IS AN ACTUARY? Many people have never heard of actuarial studies, and have no idea what an

actuary does. Actuaries are responsible for identifying, analysing and assessing risk. They determine the

likelihood of risk to ensure an organisation’s safeguards and they advise on the potential consequences of risk.

This is done by creating mathematical models using past data and the actuary’s own knowledge and experience. These

models are used to generate future scenarios to find out how likely and how severe future risks may be. Actuaries

traditionally work in consulting, banking, superannuation, stockbroking, insurance and investment and can

also find work in consumer behaviour analysis and developing areas like environmental studies, climate

change and genetics. At Monash University actuarial studies can be taken as part of the Bachelor of Commerce

or the Bachelor of Economics, and at the University of Melbourne in the Bachelor of Commerce. Pre-requisite

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY NEWS – Career Practitioners were told about developments at La Trobe at the

recent annual Career Practitioners conference.

New courses for 2015 are the Bachelor of Commerce and the double qualification, Bachelor of Commerce/

Bachelor of Laws. In addition, the Bachelor of Science and Society, the Bachelor of Creative Arts, and the

Bachelor of Media and Communications will be re-designed.

In 2015 there will be a 4 aggregate point bonus for those completing a 3/4 LOTE

A new Early Admissions Program is starting (Aspire Program). Conditional offers will be made on the basis

of: school principal’s recommendation, and the applicant’s demonstrated non-academic contribution and

leadership, with the requirement of a minimum ATAR of 50.3 (some exceptions apply), the applicants’

completing a VTAC application, and an application to La Trobe. Applications: 1 July-31 Aug. Offers in Sept.

La Trobe is moving to two Colleges, away from five faculties. They will be The Social Science, Arts and

Communications and Law College, and the Science, Health and Engineering College.

Some Health Science degrees will be re-named Applied Science degrees. Eg B. Health Science/B. Podiatry

will become B. Applied Science/B. Podiatry.
