At Freshwater State School we believe that all students can be high achievers and that every child matters, every day. As the Principal, I think it is so important that I spend time in our classroom learning environments regularly (everyday). This provides me the opportunity to identify our collective strengths, look for areas of improvement and see how our students are engaging socially and academically within our school while supporting everyone’s wellbeing. I have been asking our students a series of key questions which include:

• What are you learning about? • Where do you go to get help? • How are you progressing with your learning? • What is the next step of learning for you?

I can confidently inform you that these questions are progressively answered better each and every single day I walk through our classrooms. What this tells me, is that our teachers are being very clear

with their lesson intent and that students are being provided with effective feedback with regard to their learning. Listening to the stories our year ones are writing was the highlight of my week. A MASSIVE Thank You for Supporting Our Working Bee! Thank you to all the families who supported the beautification efforts of our school grounds. Freshwater SS is looking impeccable. Concrete was pressure washed, vegetation pruned, gardens mulched and new plants planted in our garden beds. This support is much appreciated. Our students are the beneficiaries of this work.

MATHS OLYMPIAD – YEAR 5 This year has seen the introduction of the FSS Maths Club that has provided an enrichment program for selected students in Year 5. The students have been provided with the opportunity to improve their mathematical skills and knowledge in readiness for the Maths Olympiad. The Olympiad consists of five separate contests held between May and September. The overall aim of the competition is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills in an enjoyable environment. Congratulations to Curtis Corniaux for achieving the highest individual score at FSS and to Isabella Bellwood for receiving the Encouragement Award. Special thanks to teacher Ms Scott and parent volunteer Mr Chris Corniaux who facilitated the program. Mrs Sue Fuller, Head of Curriculum YEAR 2 KURANDA RAILWAY HISTORY EXCURSION On behalf of all the year 2 students, parents and teachers, we would like to express our enormous gratitude for the contribution the P&C Association has made for this excursion to go ahead. By reducing the cost, the P&C enabled all students to access this learning experience. It has enhanced the History curriculum, and students were able to learn first-hand how and why the first explorers of our region built the Historic Kuranda Railway. THANKYOU!

BE MINDFUL AND RECYCLE As you know and may have seen, my name is Isabella and I have been working on a Science & Sustainability Project throughout this year. As part of this project, I have made a number of speeches on parade, most recently about the whole school recycling and composting process. Above you will see some data that I collect from the Prep classes, which shows how important this project is to get right in the school as this was just one year levels worth of data and we have 26 other classes in the school. I’d appreciate it if you could take the time to speak to your child/children about the recycling/compost process and remind them which rubbish goes in which bin – this would really help to support the PBL lesson and posters that I have created and have recently been a focus throughout the school. Thanks in advance, Isabella Bellwood 5LD, Eco-Warrior

FRESHWATER GIRLS AFL TEAM V GORDONVALE SS On Wednesday 25 October the FSS Girls Year 5/6 team played Gordonvale SS in the sixth Annual Women in AFL Challenge match on our top oval. The girls had the best time sharpening their skills learned from the AFL Queensland Schools Cup earlier in the year! Gordonvale kicked a couple of early goals, then the rest of the game was extremely competitive. Well done to all the girls who have represented Freshwater in AFL this year. Huge thanks to Mrs Buttenshaw for her time and commitment to coaching the girls. Thanks to the parents for supporting all of our games this year and Mr Hull from Gordonvale SS for all his efforts. Mrs Knight ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF OUTSIDE SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS Recently we’ve celebrated achievements for students who’ve participated in “outside of school” sporting events, with photos and congratulations having been published in this school newsletter. This has generated an interest in numbers to which the school newsletter cannot accommodate. While we commend these young sportspeople for their efforts it is no longer possible to continue publishing each request. Moving forward the school will continue to publish achievements for school based activities only.
