'Photography: A Love Story' featured at Arts in Bartlett

T he Bartlett Arts Center gallery, 215 S. Main, fea-tures expressions of love of nature, people and

story- telling in its August through October exhibit enti-tled "Photography: A Love Story." Featured photogra-phers in the main galleries are a married couple, Shelly Lawler and Val Mazzenga from Hoffman Estates, whose subject matter is quite different. Lawler's studio is her garden where she captures peaceful images of nature, many printed on large canvases. Former Chicago Trib-une photojournalist Mazzenga, on the other hand, documents world events such as Ground Zero, starva-tion in Africa, refugee camps in Southeast Asia, and the Sikh revolt in India, and photo essays on Mother Teresa, Richard Nixon and Michael Jordan. He has won more than 200 awards, been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize six times and was inducted into the International

Press Club of Fame.

In fact, it was Mazzenga who handed Lawler a used Nikon N-90 film camera with a 200mm lens in July 2005, and gave her a brief overview of how the camera worked. Until then, her ca-reer had been varied -- an accomplished singer, TV on-air and voice-over talent and published writer. Now she discovered a new obsession, leading her to a new form of art that she has shared through art exhibits, festivals such as the Bartlett Festival of the Arts, multimedia presentations and The Garden Collection, a Spiritual Journey into the Heart of the Garden,

a book sold on Amazon.

Works by married couple Shelly Lawler and Val Mazzenga are featured In “Photography: A Love Story” exhibit up now through October 28

New Exhibit continued

Lawler recently discovered a new way to bring beauty into buildings and homes, almost by accident, when her husband had a serious health emergency in March 2014. While recovering in St. Alexius Hospital, his view from his window was that of the hospital's bleak rooftop. After three days, he looked at Lawler and said, "I miss your pictures." So she brought in six of her images and covered the windows to change the view to a beautiful backlit garden. Staff at the hospital noticed and soon her loving gesture evolved into the installation of Shelly's Window Art Creations in the new Women & Children's Hospital. She has since been "Changing the View" ™ in other area buildings and homes.

Other photographers in this three-month exhibit include Lisa Callaghan, Linda Kay, and Melissa Lloyd from Bartlett, Greta Pfiefer from Hanover Park, Lucy Litvinenko from Streamwood, Joanne Barsanti from Roselle, Kathie Chicoine from Palatine, Lauri Novak from Elgin, and Bill Hottinger from Glendale Heights. Other new items in the gallery are wire jewelry by Leona Ketterl and sculptures by Lambert Lucietto. In addition, seven of the oil paintings in “The Beauty of Tai-wan” traveling exhibit are also in the Arts Center, with the rest installed in the Bartlett Village Hall gallery. (See page 1)

"Maybe Baby, It's You." Or maybe...it isn't? From the very first kiss to the not-so-golden years of marriage, "Maybe Baby" is a wild ride through the search for that most elusive relationship -- the soul mate. What starts as a laundry list of must-have soul mate qualities swiftly dwindles down to a desperate plea of finding someone who is simply "warm and breathing" in this comi-cal quest for compatibility. From "Mr. Right" who hilariously becomes "Mr. Wrong" the minute he steps onto the dance floor, to an elderly couple who considers remarriage at their grand-son's soccer game, this series of eleven vignettes is sure to warm the hearts of lovers every-where! Arts In Bartlett adds Historical Home Tour to this year's Arts Festival

M adeline Derango, one of this year's summer interns, worked with Arts in Bartlett and the Bartlett Historical Society to add a new event to this year's Arts Festival: a walking tour of some of the

homes plaqued by the BHS that surrounded Bartlett Park. She created the booklet design, laid it out and took photos of the homes included in the booklet given as a handout on the tour. Here is her report of the event and her photos from the tour. The Arts Fest in Bartlett had its 13th annual festival in June. For the first time ever, the festival held a historical walking tour of various homes and businesses surrounding Bartlett Park. The tour began at 9:30 on Sunday morning, led by Bartlett Historical Society members Gary and Joan Plice. Many families walked the tour in order to learn more about their home town; others wanted to see the various architectural styles around Bartlett. The tour began with two Tu-dor style homes, and continued on to highlight ranch-style, bungalows, High Victorian Italiante, Cape Cod and even an octagon-shaped home, as well as Bartlett Park's iconic Gazebo and Log Cabin. The old-est home dated back to 1876! The tour not only highlighted homes, it also taught children, as well as adults, of the interesting pasts of the people of Bartlett, as well as the incredible beauty behind each and every building.

Gary Plice points out some of the interesting features of the octagon

house at 139 S. Eastern.
