My thanks to the members of the Clubs in the affected areas for your efforts in making life a little better for those people in those devastated communities. I also acknowledge the efforts of 2nd Vice District Governor Grant Hewett and District Disaster Chairperson IPDG Maxine Whitely and her Committee. I have also been heartened by the many calls that I have received from my fellow District Governors and the support that they have offered, despite bushfires and floods also impacting many of their areas. I recognise that many Clubs in our District have already made donations towards the Esperance bushfire appeal and other disaster appeals in other areas of Australia, but I would again ask for your consideration to also assist this latest tragedy in our own District by making donations to the South West Bushfire Appeal, by sending your cheques, made payable to the Australian Lions Foundation, to Cabinet Treasurer Mike Ottmann at PO Box 169, Willetton, 6955. In the December 2015 edition of the West Lion magazine, I asked for expressions of interest from any Lion who may wish to consider taking on one of two current vacant positions on the Board of the Lions Hearing Foundation of WA (Inc.). Serving on the Board of our Lions Foundations and Institutes is a great way to further your knowledge of and make a contribution to these wonderful Lions organisations. To date I have not received any expressions of interest, so I again ask for your consideration. Membership in our District as at the 31st December 2015 stands at 1,491, a slight decrease of 6 for the year to date, with 85 new members, offset by a loss of 91 members, including unfortunately 12 deceased members. This compares to a targetted net increase of 12 members (i.e. 2 per month), so we are a little behind what we had hoped for at this stage of the current Lions year. Continued on Page 2

New Lions for November/December 2015

Welcome to all our new Lions. We hope you enjoy workingand having fun with LionsClubs in District 201 W2

At the 31st December 2015, 110 Lions Clubs Australiawide have committed to take part in Multiple District’sCentennial Grants Program by providing $1,000 inseed funding, including the Booragoon, Busselton,Kwinana, Leeming & Districts, Leeuwin, Mandurah,Margaret River and South Peth Clubs from District201W2. Those Clubs will now receive informationfrom Multiple District on the next steps to be taken inthis Program.

In 2014 the Lions Club of Albany’s “Hope in a Boat”project, saw a boat towed by a motor bike aroundAustralia raise some $45,000 for Diabetes Research.Following the success of that project, “Hope in a Boat2.0” is now planned to ride again in April 2016, withthe hope of raising further funds for DiabetesResearch. So if your Club is on their route, I ask thatyou please support them on their latest adventure.

As you return from your Christmas and New Yearbreaks, you will soon have to start thinking aboutyour Nominations for and Elections of your Board ofDirectors for the next Lions year. I would certainlyencourage our newer Club members to be given theopportunity and to be encouraged to take onleadership positions within your Clubs.

Finally, my saying for the month is “Our primepurpose in this life is to help others. And if youcan’t help them, then at least don’t hurt them –Dalai Lama”.

Pinjarra Lions aidfire victimsMembers of the Pinjarra Lions Clubgathered at the town RecreationCentre last Saturday to cook–up asausage sizzle for some of the victimsof Waroona and Yarloop fires. Clubpublicity relations officer Sue Hillreported that . . .“As you can imagine victims wereabsolutely devastated at the lossesthat incurred in the disaster zone.Unfortunately two adults who wereunaccounted for presumed lost werediscovered in a burnt out dwelling.“Shire of Murray opened up theRecreation Centre to accommodateevacuees from the towns of Waroona,Yarloop and Harvey. Some of thestories from these people are heartbreaking but at the same time thefamilies were very grateful for all thehelp they received.“Services available at the RecreationCentre were the Red Cross registeringevacuees and collecting goods fordistribution, local St John Ambulancemembers were treating people forshock and heat exhaustion, local firmsdonated water, fruit juices, milk andfresh foods.“Canteen staff were on duty keepingpeople well fed, safe and cool. Theswimming pools were opened forchildren and their parents to relax inand keep cool from the 35deg plusheat.“Whilst I was there helping with thesausage sizzle, I met up with our localFederal MP Andrew Hastie, PinjarraShire President Maree Reid and ShireCEODean Unsworth. Also there were localradio, TV crews capturing the storiesof the unfortunate victims. This is whyI became a Lion – to help when neededmost.”

PDG Alan Hawkins – Centennial Celebrations CoordinatorDistrict 201W2 – Issue N0.8 January 2016

Introduction

Hi Lions, hoping that you all have had a very happy Festive Season and are safe and well, ready to make 2016 a year

to remember as we get closer to our 100th birthday in June 2017.

Centennial Grant Program 2015-2017

# Lions Australia Centennial Program 100 Clubs, $1000 = $100,000 #

Congratulations to the 8 Clubs in 201W2 who have agreed to take part in the Multiple District Centennial Project and

have forwarded their seed-funding. The Clubs are Busselton, Leeuwin, Leeming and Districts, Kwinana, Mandurah,

Booragoon, South Perth and Margaret River.

Centennial Coordinators Workshop

On Monday, 18th January 2016, I will be attending the Centennial Coordinator’s Workshop in Sydney and will be

putting an idea to those in attendance for another Centennial Project to be taken up by all the Districts and Clubs

throughout Australia.

A very high percentage of Lions Clubs throughout Australia do the Bunnings Sausage Sizzles and raise an incredible

amount of Funds which support our Projects in the communities, strongly supported by the local Bunnings Stores who

supply the gas and equipment at no cost to the Lions Clubs involved.

Lions officially turn 100 on the 7th June 2017 and it would be fantastic to see a Lions Club at every Bunnings Store

throughout Australia on that day, or the following Saturday, 11th June, serving our Communities in celebration of our

special day.

My thoughts are that it be a FREE Sausage Sizzle for a GOLD COIN DONATION, with all the funds raised to be

donated to a pre-determined PROJECT or FOUNDATION which falls under one of the Centennial Categories of Youth,

the Environment, Vision or Hunger.

I would like to hear your thoughts and whether you’re Club would be willing to get behind such a Project??

Newsletter 3Manjimup is a Supertown in more ways than one. With the Shire of Manjimup CBD Revitalisation

Plans starting to take shape, a lot has happenedsince the Cabinet meeting in November 2014 and

1st Vice District Governor Terry’s visit to Manjimupin October 2015.Some of the money received from the Royalties

for Regions Supertown project was earmarkedfor the revitalisation of the Central Business

District of town.Brockman Street in the centre of town is a shortstreet connecting Giblet Street and Rose Street

and leading directly to the town hall which is themain venue for Convention 2016.

Manjimup is known for our many Art Decobuildings and Brockman Street has now beenrenovated, with new verandahs over the footpaths

conduct fundraising raffles, including us but nogain whithout pain.Brockman Street will be closed during convention

with local farmers market being set up in the streetalong with some displays promoting our beautiful

shire and also the Lions Cancer Bus and HearingBus will be set up in the street for easy access byboth Lions and town people.

park is also the home of the milltown pioneervillage known as the Hamlet, the timber museum, the steam museum and plans are in hand for the

installation of World of Energy. This venue is beingconsidered for the Sunday Lunch BBQ, so there

The Lions Hearing Foundation are

pleased to announce that the inaugural award of the Arthur

and Lorna Dodd Award has been presented to Lion Lorna

Dodd.

It was agreed by all Board members to present this award

to Lion Lorna for her dedication to the Foundation.

Lorna was a Lions Lady from 1973 when her husband,

the late Arthur, joined Manning Lions Club. As wasexpected she was a very busy Lions Lady and supported

the Club with enthusiasm. Lion Arthur died in 1993 and

she joined the Club in 1994 when lady members wereaccepted.

As she had been associated with the Board since 1980when Arthur joined, she was elected to join in 1995 and

has been a member since and rarely misses a meeting.

In the six years I have been on the Board, Lorna has always

been positive and constructive at meetings and is a well

respected member of the Lions Hearing Foundation.

The photograph shows the presentation with Chairman,

Lion Chris Smelt and District Governors, Colin Heap andAllan Cooper.

LIONS DISTRICT 201W2 - GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM

November 2015Hello to all LionsDates for next years ELLI and RLLI have been received from MD and I would like Lions and Leo Leaders to sharewith their members. These are aimed at future club leaders and I encourage you all too actively promote through your District, zonesand clubs. Both of these programmes are targeted at the newer Lions leader and potential Lions leader at the club level.  Why do we have two of them?

The ELLI is run by Lions Clubs International for all of our Constitutional Area.  It is open to Lions who have not yetserved as a club President (exception for Charter Presidents).  It is a three day live in programme and will attractapplications from MD201, MD202 & MD307.  As such places are limited and we are likely to only have 1 to 2successful applicants from each district. The RLLI is run by our Multiple District with funding assistance from Lions Clubs International so applicants willonly come from MD201 making more spaces available.  Although still targeted at the newer and potential Lionsleaders, because we run this ourselves we are able to be a little more flexible on who can attend, so having been aclub President for instance won’t immediately make the person ineligible.  Also our Multiple District has taken theopportunity to include Leos (of adult age because it is live in) which helps to provide some invaluable interaction withyounger people.  We have also had a policy of moving the RLLI around from state to state (2015 was held in WA),so that it creates more opportunity for Lions to attend in their home state and help to reduce their travel costs. Thisdoes not mean it is restricted to applications from the host state.

The impact that these opportunities have had on previous Leos and Lions has been impressive. These Leos andLions are our future! Without encouragement and support Lions membership will suffer, as when we have newleadership a correlation is often to be found with an increase in membership of clubs!!

Details and Application FormsDetails and application form for the ELLI are available on the LCI web page.  Applications close on 24th January2016.

Details and application form for the RLLI are attached and will also be on the MD web page in the next few days. Applications close 29th January 2016.

DATES:

1.       Emerging Lions Leadership Institute (ELLI)Brisbane: 8th to 10th April 2016

 2.       Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI)

Bankstown Sports Club: 11th to 13th March 2016

As Leo’s are a project of Lions with an aim, in part, to develop leadership in young people, the cost of a Leo attending could besponsored by their parent Lions club out of Activities funds.  The cost of a Lion attending cannot be funded from Activities butI still encourage Lions Clubs to consider funding or subsidising their members from their Administration funds as an investmentin the club’s future. What a great idea for a club project, spending money on your club’s future? These programmes are an ideal why for next year’s club leaders to gain some experience and skills to assist them.  I knowthat clubs will not have held their elections by the closing date but many clubs will have identified their upcoming leadersand could benefit form this opportunity.

Kind regardsMargaret LandwehrLions District 201W2

A Christmas Favourby a South Yunderup family turned ended up as anightmare

It was Christmas eve and the Beirne family were headingsouth on the Mandurah bridge to friends home in Falconto drop off a BBQ when they were involved in a car pileup. The person who caused the accident drove off withouteven a “can I help you”

They ended up in Peel Health Campus for x-rays andcheck ups. Narelle (mum) suffered a fractured sturmanand a broken arm. Luckily Dad and four year old daughterShae–Anne were damage free. They were released fromhospital around midnight.

Meanwhile the Mandurah Lions Club were in the field ontheir annual Christmas Eve run delivering 395 presentsto 149 families in the Peel and Murray areas, the Beirneswere on the list.

Santa aka PDG Wally Barrett a Mandurah Lion was askedto deliver to homes in the suburb of South Yunderupincluding the Beirnes. They called twice, the gates werelocked and no lights on.

A decision was made to call again on Christmas Dayand thats when Santa’s Elf Anne Barrett reported that, “At the front door a little girl ran up to Santa and huggedhim, then the parents joined in for a full hugging, we allcried. It was a very emotional and they were so gratefulthat Santa had come back for a special visit.

“The family had little chance to do any food shoppingbecause of the accident. Dad said that they would callFood Bank for support” . Anne said.

Satnav – I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car.A Satnav is a driver’s friend it tells you where you are.I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life. It’s better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive“It’s sixty miles an hour”, it says, “You’re doing sixty five”.It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brakeAnd tells me that it’s never ever, safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to greenIt seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear. And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.I’m sure no other driver, has so helpful a device. For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey’s pretty fraught. So why don’t I exchange it, and get a quieter sort?Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I’m properly fed.It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff,

I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off.

“Shae–Anne had some gifts for Santa, it was her turn togive, she wrapped up one of her favourite books ‘WhoFlung Dung’ and presented it with a magnificentChristmas drawing.

“We both left the South Yunderup home thinking howglad we were to go back with the Chrissie presents thenext day,” Anne closed.

LIONS CLUB OF SOUTH PERTH – 1965 TO 2015

The Lions Club of South Perth celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Mount Henry Tavern on the 24th October. Forover 50 years the Club has been involved in activities such as Swap meets, Children of Courage, Christmas Carolsat McDougall Park, Christmas gift wrapping, the sale of Christmas cakes and Lions mints and BBQs at a variety oflocations to raise money to support initiatives within the community.

The Lions Club of South Perth donates to Lions Foundations, Kensington Secondary School, Incredibowls, Foodbankand Alzheimers Association among others. Priorities are directed mainly toward local children with disabilities orwho are disadvantaged in some way.

The last eight years has seen the development of the South Perth Lions Big Band and the Youth Music Program. The youth program gives children from the district the opportunity to learn to play an instrument and play in a bandthat encourages improvisation through a mix of jazz and swing music. Remarkable advancement has been achievedand some of the earliest players have gone on to join the senior band. Senior band members provide their time andmusical skills free of charge and are a valuable means of fundraising. The senior band provided fantastic entertainmentat the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

One highlight of the evening was the attendance of Mr. Ross LaSpina and his wife Vicki. Ross was at the CharterMeeting in October 1965. He is, remarkably, still an active member at Fremantle Lions Club at over 90 years of age.

District Governor Allan Cooper presented three members, Bob Whitney, Dave Allen and Cathy Mueller, with awardsduring the evening.

The Club continues to receive great support from our local community as well as the South Perth City Council, JohnMc Grath MLA and Steve Irons Federal MP.
