Ms Paddy McEvoyPRINCIPAL

FROM THE PRINCIPALDear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of SAC,

At our Opening Mass to celebrate the start of the 2018 school year, our celebrant Fr Charles Gauci called on students to let their light shine as they develop their gifts and talents throughout the year. In this Year of Youth, we also celebrated the gift that young people are to our Church and our world. Students of all ages engaged respectfully in the Mass and the choir led us in beautiful singing. After just one week of school, our new Reception students enjoyed their first whole school event.

This week Reception to Year 8 parents and teachers spent some time together at our Meet the Teacher evening. Clear and consistent communication between home and school is vital to students’ growth and development, and we like to begin the school year by establishing strong relationships. It was great to have so many parents attend these information sessions. Next Tuesday 13 February our Year 12 parents will also attend an Information Evening, focused on effective ways to support students in their final year at the College.

Tell Us Your Thoughts

Here's your chance to shape the future of SAC.

We would love to hear from all students, parents and the

SAC community.

From the Principal continued...

It is always a privilege to acknowledge the effort and commitment of our graduating students, and Tuesday’s Merit Ceremony at Government House was no exception. Achieving an A+ with Merit in any subject is exceptional, and 15 Merits were awarded to St Aloysius College graduates this week. These young women all achieved an ATAR over 90, and the diversity of their pathways beyond school reflects the individuality of their strengths and passions. We look forward to welcoming back 36 graduates from the Class of 2017 to our own Dux Assembly next Monday. Our Old Scholars’ Association (SACOSA) will also be holding a gathering for all the 2017 graduates on March 23, 5-7pm, and we hope that will be the first of many opportunities to reconnect beyond school.

Clare Peterson (Class of 2017) was recognised in a special way at this year’s Merit Ceremony. Clare was one of 27 students presented with a Governor of SA Commendation – Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding results and strong commitment to community service. During her years at the College, Clare took part in Fair Trade Fortnight, Blankets of Love, Vinnies Sleepouts, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, planted Green JAM garden beds and many other social justice initiatives that profoundly shaped her experience of school. Clare’s story exemplifies an education at SAC: we are educating for empathy, engagement, curiosity and openness. Our graduates emerge with a strong sense of moral purpose and feel empowered to make a difference in the world. These are outcomes of a very innovative, contemporary approach to education, and they come about because teachers and support staff work hard every day to nurture these qualities in our students. We are so proud of Clare’s achievements and look forward to her leading Student Social Justice initiatives through JAM in 2018.

The Student Representative Council Executive for 2018 has made a strong start to the year by preparing letters of welcome for our Year 8 students. These gestures of support for students transitioning from primary to secondary school indicate that our student leaders have hearts open to others. I know that they will be great role models for younger students and the Mercy values of service and respect are already strongly evident in their leadership.

I hope that our new students are beginning to feel at home at SAC. As we say our final farewell to the Class of 2017 at the Dux Assembly next Monday, I know that all students will be inspired by their achievements to embrace the opportunities for learning and friendship that present themselves in 2018.

Sacramental MeetingStudents at St Aloysius College have an opportunity to prepare for the sacraments of:

• Reconciliation from Year 3• Confirmation and First Eucharist from Year 4

These are according to the Catholic Rite. They will learn about these sacraments through the Religious Education program with their class teachers (Years 3 & 4) or at lunchtime lessons (Years 5-6). They will attend a one day workshop at school with me. Students can then celebrate their sacraments in the Adelaide Cathedral Parish or in their own parishes.

Parents are required to attend some meetings during the year to participate in the family preparation. This is an important part of the sacramental program. You will be required to present your daughter at Mass for Rite of Welcome on Sunday 18 March at 6pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral and then at the Thanksgiving Mass at the end of the year. These presentations will be conducted with St Mary’s College and Christian Brothers College which form part of the Adelaide Cathedral Parish.

A meeting will be held on Tuesday 27 February in the Catherine McAuley Auditorium at 7pm for those interested in having their daughters prepare and celebrate the sacraments in 2018. Fr Charles Gauci from the Adelaide Cathedral Parish will be presenting information about the importance of sacraments. You will be able to nominate your daughter to participate in the sacramental program this year. Please send me a copy of your daughter’s Certificate of Baptism if you have not done so in the past, and return the slip below to the home class teacher or email to me directly.

MUSIC AT SACWelcome back to another busy and exciting year of Music at St Aloysius College. Music forms a very special part of the College community and students are offered a variety of learning experiences from individual tuition to choirs and various instrumental ensembles.Tuition is available for the following instruments in 2018: * Acoustic Guitar * Electric Guitar * Saxophone* Bass Guitar * Flute * Trombone* Cello * Oboe * Trumpet* Clarinet * Percussion * Viola* Double Bass * Piano * Violin* Drum Kit * VoiceLessons will be offered for 30 minutes per week during school time. Times are generally negotiated with the individual instrumental teacher so that lessons are on either fixed or rotating timetables, as appropriate. 2018 Instrumental/Vocal Tuition Application Forms with all details are available for collection from the SAC Office, or your daughter may collect a copy from the Music Department.Supporting instrumental lessons are a number of ensembles and choirs. Ensemble playing gives players and vocalists the opportunity to learn a vast array of repertoire while experiencing the sound of a full band, orchestra, choir or chamber ensemble. Students also use the opportunity to expand upon the techniques learned in private lessons. We encourage all students learning an instrument to participate in at least one ensemble at the school. Ensembles offered are:* Primary Choir (Years 3-5)* Junior String Ensemble* Middle School Concert Band (Years 5-8)* Catholic Schools Music Festival Choir (Years 6-7)* Senior Choir (Years 7-12)* Senior String Ensemble* Flute Ensemble* Catch 22 Choir (audition required)* Stage Band (Years 8-12)* Orchestra (Years 7-12)* Rock Band (Years 8-12)* Percussion Ensemble (Years 7-12)* Drum Corps (Years 7-12)Each ensemble has many opportunities to perform throughout the year. Events include Music Camp, Generations in Jazz, Catholic Schools Music Festival, School Assemblies, Eisteddfods - Adelaide and Balaklava, community and college events, etc.

This year’s annual Music Camp will be held at the Nunyara Conference Centre in Belair, providing an opportunity for intensive rehearsals and team building activities. It will be held from Sunday 4 to Monday 5 March and will involve all members of the SAC Senior Choir, Catch 22, Stage Band, Orchestra, Flute Ensemble, Senior String Ensemble, Rock Band and Drum Corps. Students will be provided further details from their respective ensemble director.

MUSIC CAMP

It gives me great pleasure to introduce our St Aloysius College Music Leaders of 2018: Elspeth and Indyanna (Primary Leaders) and Madeleine and Siobhan (Senior Leaders). Music Leaders are an integral part of the Music leadership team and are required to attend meetings, participate in college ensembles/choirs as befitting their music vocation, assist with Music and whole school events and provide active leadership within the SAC community. I congratulate the girls and look forward to working with them throughout the year. For more information about the Instrumental or Music Curriculum Extension Programs, please do not hesitate to contact me. SECONDARY SPORT

Welcome to Secondary Sport for 2018! As the new Secondary Sport Coordinator, I have been thrilled to hear of so many students having the courage to try a new sport in Term 1. At SAC, we encourage our girls to recognise sport as a way of developing their whole self. It provides opportunities for our students to be more involved in their school community, to make new friends, to develop resilience, to understand the importance of commitment and working as part of a team, to have more energy, to control their emotions and to develop self-confidence. This term, SAC has nominated a number of teams in secondary indoor volleyball, touch football, water polo, basketball and tennis competitions. Several students in Years 7/8 have also nominated to participate in the weekly lunchtime lacrosse clinics. It is fantastic to see so many of our students involved in sport and committing to being physically active. I look forward to watching our Years 7-12 students compete as well as sharing their achievements with you throughout the year. Students who have nominated for Term 1 secondary sport should have received a permission form during this week. These permission forms must have been returned to the PE Office by today, Friday 9 February. These forms are a requirement in order for students to participate in secondary sport in Term 1. All nominated students will receive an information pack via email this evening outlining all the details for the sport they are involved in for Term 1. It is important that all students and parents read this information pack carefully. All Term 1 sport participants, parents/uardians must read the appropriate SAC Sport Handbooks that are available on the SAC website. Please read the information corresponding to the nominated sport thoroughly, in particular the SAC sport and weather policies.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

On the first day of school I was nervous and I got a bit scared that I wouldn’t be in my friends’ class. When I saw they were in my class, I felt happy because I had a good teacher and I had most of my best friends with me. Now I am really excited for the year ahead and what it holds. Lilyana Hails 6RLDuring the end of the holidays I was getting myself worked up about the first day of Year 6! When I was on the way to school I thought I felt fine but as soon as we got to the school gates I was so excited and nervous. There was no reason to be worried though, the class and all the students are so nice. All day we did the best things, colouring and getting to know everyone. Ms Lambi has been so kind and warm to the whole class. I think this is going to be a great year. Elizabeth Burgess 6RLThe night before school I was really excited to see my friends and be in Year 6! The morning of the first day of school I was very excited, but also very nervous. I was so nervous that I didn’t eat breakfast. As I got ready, I kept thinking about the good things that will happen in Year 6. When I got in the car, I didn’t stop talking. I wanted to get the nerves out of my system. When I walked into school, I saw all my friends and the nerves went away. I was so happy to see that my friends are in my class. Georgia Robertson 6RL

RECEPTION TO YEAR 7AFTER SCHOOL

ARRANGEMENTSA reminder to parents about the arrangements for students who stay on the school premises after school. Students in Reception to Year 6 need to go to OSHC if they are not collected by the end of teacher supervision at 2.45pm on Mondays and by 3.35pm Tuesday to Friday. Year 7 students can study in the library where they will be supervised by library staff until 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.00pm Friday.

If a R- Year 6 student has a sister in the Secondary school she will still need to attend OSHC and not wait in the library with her older sister. These measures ensure that both parents and staff are able to exercise their legal responsibilities regarding students in a way that ensures a responsible degree of safety.
