Newsletter2018
From the PrincipalPrimary students and staff have continued to enjoy many end of year activities and assemblies this fortnight. Just a few days after Spectacular, students were entertained by the Music is Fun group, which integrates comedy, song and dance in a high energy performance. The next day all students took part in the Primary Assembly, led by Year 2 students, with a Christmas theme. The recent ABC documentary series 'Don’t Stop the Music' illustrated the significant impact that music education has on overall achievement at school. There is no doubt that the strength of our arts programs at SAC makes a strong contribution to student outcomes. Thank you to all the staff who make these events possible, and to the many parents who came along to enjoy the assembly performances. Continued page 3. Ms Paddy McEvoy

From The Principal (continued)Lessons and assessments have concluded for our senior students, and many have been taking part in experiences outside the classroom. The World Challenge group has headed off to Cambodia and Laos, the Pipalyatjara trip has just returned and our French Exchange students departed last weekend. On Sunday, the SPACE Camp Senior group accompanied by Physics teacher Mr Paolo Arman depart for NASA to participate in an International Study Program. School travel can often plant the seeds for future adventure and help to develop that global perspective that is so valuable in today’s world.
“I’ve spent a bit of time with the Year 12s in the last couple of weeks (driving to schoolies etc) and they are a beautiful, funny and optimistic group of young women. They are thoughtful and clever, and they look out for each other. They love the school and their teachers… They make me hopeful about the future.
I don’t know what the magic recipe is at SAC - but it works!”
I am so grateful to be part of a school where the magic of education happens on a daily basis. Thank you for your contributions throughout the year, and I wish you all the peace and joy of the Christmas season.

Applications and interviews for the Student Representative Council Executive for 2019 have concluded, and a dynamic and committed group of leaders have been chosen (see the full list in this newsletter). Congratulations to Maya and Kate, who will lead our SRC, and Grace and Holly, who will be our Social Justice leaders for 2019. They have all made strong contributions to our community over the years, and we look forward to seeing the impact they will have as student leaders next year.
The end of each year is often a time when we look back at the highlights and challenges of the year and celebrate the growth that we have witnessed in our students. This is especially true for those families who have daughters completing Year 12, as they say farewell to what has been their second home for many years. I want to share with you an excerpt from a letter I received last week from the mother of one of our Year 12 graduates:
Our 2018 World Challenge group in Cambodia
Bianca and Jazmin stopped at the Planetarium before heading for NASA.

2018 Chinese Language Awards
The CLTASA Chinese Language Awards reward and encourage students in their Chinese language learning achievements. This year, award winners from St Aloysius College are Maya Murali (Year 11) and Morgan Brooks (Year 6). With their parents, winners attended an inspirational evening celebrating their language learning and achievements. Each student received a prize and a certificate.
Winners of the 2018 awards had to be non-background learners studying Chinese as a second language, as well as show outstanding language skills, enthusiasm for Chinese studies, and knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.
We congratulate Maya and Morgan on their achievements in Chinese in 2018.

Bon Voyage! On Saturday evening, we bid farewell to three of our senior French students as they embarked on an International Exchange to France. Megan McCaffrey, Maidlin Overton and Janitta Thorn set off on their great adventure at 10:30 on Saturday night, after being wished safe travels by family, friends and Maria Fragnito, one of their French teachers. They arrived in Paris and Lyon on Sunday afternoon local time, exhausted after their long journey but excited about what the next six weeks has in store for them. We wish them all the best for their French adventure and look forward to hearing all about it in 2019.

Let's Go Fly a Drone! As part of our Digital Technologies curriculum, students have been learning about personal, environmental and community uses of drones. We were delighted to have Baden Corr visit us as a guest speaker who spoke about drone safety and rules for use in the community. Baden then demonstrated how to fly his drone. Later students used Movie Maker to create drone videos.

Year 9 Digital TechnologyAdobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software application which can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and ebooks. Graphic Designers and production artists are the principle users, so we visited Alexandra Gonzalez Salas, SAC's publications Officer and asked how she uses the program. Ale then came to our classroom and taught us the basics of the program. Using our new insights, students redesigned a double page of the Student Diary to present SAC's Information and Communications policy.

Science Excursions
"From a teaching perspective this excursion was organised for Science to enrich student understanding of 'classification', particularly how 'classification' helps organise the diverse groups of organisms living on Earth.
Students completed booklets to help them in their discovery relating to: reasons for classification and identification, use of hierarchical systems and scientific conventions for naming species as well as considering threatened species and animal enclosure design." Fatema Kashmiri LD

Bûche de NoëlIn Week 7, Ms Fragnito granted her Year 8 French class the opportunity to decorate a Bûche de Noël. They came up with many creative and unique Christmas themed designs including the polar express and a winter wonderland. The activity concluded with the students masterpieces being judged and eaten by them and participating teachers. It was an enjoyable and memorable experience teaching the students the skills of communication and teamwork, while creating some Christmas spirit.

End of Year Primary CelebrationFilled with joy by the Holy Spirit
The Primary Staff and students gathered with family and friends to celebrate the End of Year Primary Mass on Tuesday December 4 in the St Francis Xavier Cathedral. Fr Maurice Shinnick, Acting Administrator of the Cathedral was our celebrant. The first verse of Tuesday’s Gospel of Luke set the theme for our Mass:” Filled with joy by the Holy Spirit” . At this time of the year, we are filled with joy as we celebrate our achievements, our end of the school year, the school holidays, the season of Advent and the coming of Jesus at Christmas. We are reminded that this is the time of giving of ourselves to others and having gratitude for the opportunities we have received. The Primary choir added a special element of joyous celebration as students joined in the singing of hymns. Reception classes decorated the Cathedral with Advent Wreaths which they had made to celebrate the beginning of Advent. The finale was a procession of the Holy Family with Mrs Crilley (Mary) carrying her newborn son (Jesus), accompanied by Mr Sheridan (Joseph) and led by the Christmas star. We thank all staff and students for participating in this final celebration of our school year. We wish you and your family all the blessings for a safe and happy Christmas in celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
