Hats and Swimming Togs

It is school policy for all children to wear a broad brimmed or bucket sun hat every day in Term 1 and 4 at Pongakawa School to protect children from the harsh ultra-violet rays. If your child does not have one or forgets to bring or wear it, they will be directed to play under the trees at the front of the school. In the same way swimming gear needs to come each and every day as we swim regardless of the weather. The school is lucky to have a heated swimming pool so it is never cold in the water.

Dear Parents and Caregivers I hope you had a fantastic weekend and that you were able to enjoy some of the fantastic weather we have been having. I know for those of you involved in the farming sector some rain would be very welcome about now and as a “townie” I have to remind myself of that. Now we are in our third week of school the Board has an expectation that all students will now be wearing a wide brimmed or bucket hat in line with the policy change around this. Students wearing caps will be asked to play under the oak trees at the front of the school so they can still enjoy outside time without being in danger from the very hot sun. As I undertook my duties last week at lunchtime I could not help but feel the heat and certainly greater sun protection was required. We have sunblock in every room at school but I would advise you to apply block before your child leaves for school in the morning. If you are a follower of new and current events, you will have read about major reforms being proposed by a government task force. The changes being mooted are wide reaching and will have a potentially huge impact on all schools in New Zealand including Pongakawa. I would encourage you to look at those possible changes as it has real relevance to your child’s education going forward. I will provide you with links etc. so you can read more about it. Naturally, I am learning more about these myself and as you would expect have a personal view forming, however it is important you reach your own conclusions. Pongakawa is a highly successful school and an excellent example of the self-managing model which allows parents through their elected Board of Trustees to govern and make decisions relevant to their own community. I enjoy the way our school is able to celebrate its uniqueness and is able to provide the type of education that fits our families. I truly hope this aspect will not be changed and that we have to conform to a one size fits all model. We have now signed off the unconfirmed ERO report and this has been sent back to the Review Office. For the first time in my memory we have not asked for any changes or alterations as we believe the team who evaluated us got things pretty much bang on. This means our confirmed report should be online within the next month. Here is another snippet or two from our ERO report. A focus for evaluation is around equity and excellence - around valued outcomes for students regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The team asked how well we are doing this for the children at Pongakawa. Their finding was: The school is making good progress towards achieving equitable outcomes. There are many excellent outcomes for learners. Next week we will provide a little feedback on what ERO says about our Board of Trustees and our leadership team. Have a great week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

School Canteen - Important Notice Please note that: the canteen will be open all this week There is a new menu this term. Please be aware that students will not be able to get noodles or pies heated at school.

Strep Throat We are currently experiencing several cases of strep throat around school. If your child has symptoms of vomiting, sore throat or headache with temperatures please get them tested by their doctor. They are contagious until 24 hours after antibiotics have started. If left untreated it can cause rheumatic fever which affects your heart. Both the Life Pharmacy and My Pharmacy in Jellicoe Street Te Puke can also do swabs for free if you believe your child may have strep.
