Greetings from Hil l Spring International School!
Welcome to our first “Springtimes” edition for this Academic
Year.
“Back to School” was very exciting with the declaration of
our outstanding IBDP (Gr 12) results wherein all 47 students
were awarded the prestigious diploma with the topper
scoring a full 45 points. The average score for this batch was
39 out of 45.
This was soon followed by the IGCSE (Gr 10) results in August
with 39 students securing an International Certificate of
Education (ICE) distinction certificate and only 1 student
securing the ICE merit certificate.
In June 2019, 24 students and 2 teachers went on a French
Language Student - Teacher exchange programme to
Bretagne, Annecy and of course Paris.
I am also privileged and proud to share with you the
outstanding success we had had where 39 students
comprising of 5 Junior and 8 Senior teams participated at the
World Scholar's Cup 2019 - Global Round at the Hague -
Netherlands. In the Junior category, one of our HSI teams
won the first place in the Global round and one of the teams
in the Senior category won the second place in South Asia. All
our 13 teams qualified to compete in November 2019 at the
Tournament of Champions in Yale, USA.
With much enthusiasm and a pertinent message the
Independence Day Assembly was staged by Gr 11 for the
whole school. The other events celebrated were
Janmashtami, Teachers' Day, the Senior School English
Elocution Extempore Competition & Gandhi Jayanti
followed by our mega Middle & Senior School event
“EXPRESSIONS”.
Looking forward to many more prestigious awards in this
Academic Year and beyond.

SCHOLARS - THE HAGUE GLOBAL ROUND
Hill Spring International School furthered
its robust and credible presence at the
2019 The Hague Global Round (July 21-
26) of the World Scholar’s Cup among
1900 scholars from 51 countries.

19 students from Grade 9 -11 attended

15th – 18th August. Jash Parekh of
Grade 12 served as an Asst. Director in
the UNHCR. The Harvard Secretariat
repeatedly emphasized the need for
“kind and compassionate” delegates
who succeeded in convincing others
and forming blocs without any
aggression or bullying. We are very
proud of the HSI delegates who steered
their way through tricky situations and
potential conflicts in committee with
diplomacy and courtesy. The
delegates debated on various issues
such as the effects of climate change,
economic growth in post colonial
nations, the plight of urban refugees,

BDSMUN, Mumbai
The Hill Spring Delegation to the
over the weekend of
August 30, 31 and September 1, has
emerged with flying colors and much
adulation! The school has been
recognized as The Best Large
Delegation with 15 of the 19 students
winning prestigious awards and the Best
Delegate in the Night Crisis also being
awarded to Jash Shah from Hill Spring
International School. The students
debated on a variety of topics across
the DISEC, the UNHRC, the Lok Sabha,
the Security Council and the ICJ with
topics ranging from conflict and peace
keeping issues to humanitarian ones.

Another three delegates, namely Aalia

through their individual publications in the
Press Corps. The Hill Spring delegation was

A delegation from the Hill Spring
International School took part in the
Cathedral Model United Nations
(CMUN) 2019 over the weekend of 23rd,
24th and 25th August. The delegates
debated on some very pertinent topics
in committees like the United Nations
Commission on Narcotic Drugs, the
Special Summit on the Venezuelan
National Crisis, the Emergency Summit
of the International Civil Aviation
Organization: 2001, and the Special
Political and Decolonization Committee.
Some delegates also contested key
historical events and ideas in
committees like the Imperial Council of
the Qing Dynasty: 1895 in which Yug

Ten students of Grades 9 and 10
participated in ABMUN 2019,
. Our delegates were
thoroughly engaged in committee as
they debated on topics like China's
debt trap diplomacy, the effect of the
GST and the IL&FS crisis in India, and the
controversy over the Kohinoor diamond:
was it stolen from India or was it gifted
to Britain? Two committees also revisited
the past and had a fresh look at the
Vietnam war, and the tension between
Iran and US following the end of the
Pahlavi dynasty with the fall of the Shah,
and the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini. At
the end of the conference Jayden
Dabral commented that it was
“enlightening” to learn from
experienced munners, while Agastya
Bahl described the three days as
“fabulous”! The HSI delegation won
three awards -

Grade 12 students of IBDP presented a
at the school
cafeteria. The ensemble wanted the
narrative to be relevant to present day
young Indians, keeping in mind the
students from Grade 1 to 12 were the
target audience.
Themes of patriotism, national pride and
progress embellished the performance
but with a twist. Ideation team member
Pratham Sarvaiya tactfully chose the
historical event of Independent India's
first Prime Minister, Mr. Jawarhal Nehru's
delivering his famous Tryst with Destiny
speech at midnight on 15 August 1947.
Then this real life event was enhanced
with fiction, when the infamous sci-fi time
traveller character of Doctor Who
transports Pandit Nehru from 1947 to
2019 India. The confusing realities of
one-act assembly titled 'V Cycle' on 14
August 2019 to celebrate the 73rd
Independence day

present day Independent India surprised,
and even appalled the first prime minister.
In order to bring the order back, PM
recalls the unsung hero, Venkayya Pingali,
the man who designed the Indian
National Flag to remind us what the
national tricolor stands for and what the
Ashoka chakra (wheel) in the center
represents. Audience saw these real and
fictional characters come alive on stage,
along with a personified version of the
web search engine Google as one of the
main characters.
In essence, one could say, that the grade
12 students had their own tryst with
destiny when it was decided this year's
Independence assembly will be done by
grade 12 instead of grade 11. Thus, the 26
twelfth graders: enthusiastic, motivated
and wanting to make the most of their
last year at Hill Spring International
grabbed this opportunity together to put
up this one last performance before their
graduation. It was well-received and
much appreciated for its simple yet
intriguing plot line.

choice as teachers let loose and enjoyed
themselves by dressing up in a variety of
costumes. When asked about the
carnival later that day at the assembly, a
resounding majority of the teachers said
they would like to see something similar
next year.
After the carnival, teachers eagerly
awaited the student performances and
they did not disappoint! Students from
the PYP to the IB showcased their talents
and left the teachers spellbound
including one performer from grade 6
who showed off his beat boxing skills
impromptu. Moreover, members of the
Student Council prepared a video to
thank the teachers and compliment the
Teacher’s Day Celebrations
On the 30th of August, we students were
given the opportunity to give back to
the most important people in our
academic lives: our teachers. In the
days leading up to it teachers displayed
their sartorial virtuosity managing
ensembles for Hawaiian Day, Black and
White Day and Twinning. The day began
with a bang as members of the Student
Council and volunteers from Grade 12
put up a carnival for the teachers on the
green patch. The carnival featured a
variety of stalls, such as a photo booth
stall; a minute to win it stall, and food
stalls with delicious samosas, pizzas,
cookies and cakes. The photo booth in
particular proved to be a very popular
hard work they had put
into their outfits for the
entire week leading up
to Teacher’s Day.

showed off their skills with
a singing and an acting

Janamashtami CelebrationThe festival of Janamashtami was
celebrated with much awaited
excitement and enthusiasm by the entire
school. Our young 'govinda's' danced to
foot tapping music and cheered on for
their friends, who broke the dahi-handi
under the careful supervision of the
teachers.

Creativity, skills in problem solving and
collaboration were triggered through
activities like the catapult-building
contest. The Ingredi-Hunt, where students
learned to cook from scratch with organic
ingredients and minimal additives, proved
thoroughly enjoyable to them. And finally,
the Village Immersion programme
sensitised students to the workings, the
rigour and the challenges of rural life
making students appreciate their own
position of privilege and the values of
patience, fortitude, harmony with nature,
to be imbibed.
Thus, the Camp integrated the 3 strands of
CAS namely Creativity, Activity and
Service. Creativity includes exploring the
intuitive child in us. Activity includes
physical discipline leading to a healthy life
style. The Service component calls for an
awareness of the needs of the socially
and economically disadvantaged and
responding to it. The Camp helped
students identify their strengths, explore
new and unfamiliar challenges through
creative learning styles. It further helped
the students to communicate and
collaborate with their peers and become
more sensitive to the economically less
privileged. The Camp helped the students
move out of their comfort zones and
infused a strong group morale within the
class.
Nature Turks CAST away Camp
Grade 11 students from Hill Spring
International School participated in a
CAS camp called the “Nature Turks CAST
away” programme from August 11th to
August 14th, 2019. The camp site was in a
picturesque village called Shahpur, a
two-hour drive from Hyderabad, which
allowed students to enjoy the exquisite
mountains with unique rock formations
en route.
The camp days began with training in
basic camping knowledge such as
navigation, using a compass, rope skills
and bushcraft, where students honed
skills and abilities that they could not in
the city. Then followed the extremely
strenuous activities such as rappelling,
zip-lining and long treks at the Golden
Boulder and the Khilla Ganpur fort
through which students enjoyed nature’s
lovely sights and appreciated the rare

¡Viva España!
As part of their Spanish Ab Initio course of
the IBDP, 13 students of Grade XI
travelled to Spain from June 2-14, 2019,
accompanied by their teachers, Ms.
Anuya Naik and Ms. Kaushalya Patel. This
trip enabled the students to immerse
themselves in Spanish language and
culture.
CELEI, an institute based in Granada, was
the centre for the students' language
lessons. The frequent interactions in
Spanish, in class and outside, with natives
of the country, have been a tremendous
boost to the students' confidence.
The Spanish lessons were interspersed with
day trips and visits to historical and
cultural sites in different cities: Madrid –
Prado museum, Royal Palace, Santiago
Bernabeu Stadium (Kushaal Patel
motivated all his friends to sing the
anthem of Real Madrid in the stands);
Granada – Alhambra; Córdoba –
Mosque-Cathedral; Nerja – pre-historic
caves; and Toledo – Synagogue and
Cathedral.

A major highlight of this trip was a
'Tablao de flamenco' which
proved to be an amazing
culmination to the Flamenco
lessons for students. Another
interesting activity was a
scavenger hunt involving the
wonderful and creative graffiti
artwork in the Realejo
neighbourhood of Granada which
allowed for a discussion on various
social issues. HSI students also
thoroughly enjoyed a game of
football against children of a local
school; and incredibly, our kids
won it in a penalty shootout!
Food is a window to any culture
and helps one learn more about
the people of a region. Spanish
gastronomy is varied and colourful,
made of fresh ingredients and
produce, and the students and
teachers had a splendid time
trying various local delicacies like
paella, gazpacho, churros con
chocolate, piononos, assorted
meats and ham, and much more.
Our students' enthusiastic
participation in all the activities
and their zest for learning,
combined with incredible learning
experiences and the amazing
Spanish people, made this an
unforgettable school trip.
Weaving Histories in Varanasi
The Hindi Students of Grade 9-12
undertook a cultural tour of the historic
city of Varanasi, the oldest living city in
the world and arguably the cradle of
Hindi culture and civilization, from 5th-
7th September.
The students visited several temples
such as Kashi Vishwanath Temple,
Durga Mata Mandir, Sankat Mochan
Mandir and the Museum of Manas
Mandir, which depicted the chapters
of Ram Charit Manas electronically. This
reinforced the values and traditions of
Indian culture and enlightened them
about the origin of these holy places.
They visited Assi Ghat, (one of the
several ghats of the Ganges), wherein,
they witnessed the spectacular Ganga
Aarti and Chanting of Mantras, thereby
elucidating the culture and heritage of
Indian legends and mythological
stories. At the Bharat Kala Sangrahalay
(Indian Art Museum), Asia's largest
University Museum, students visited
among other exhibits: the Sculptures
and Medieval Art Pieces tracing back
to the 1st Century, Artefacts of the
Indian Textile Industry, the Coins
Gallery, the Terracotta Gallery and the
Archives of Mythological Characters.

Trip to Varanasi
University where a University Professor
gave a talk about the interdependence
of Indian languages, the impact of
Globalisation on Hindi and its role in the
contemporary business world. Students
thoroughly enjoyed a visit to a Saree
factory, where they learnt about the
operations and techniques of production
of authentic Banarasi Sarees. Lastly,
through a visit to a Stupa, a Chinese
Temple, a Monastery and a Thai Temple,
students obtained an understanding
about mindfulness depicted through the
life and teachings of Gautam Buddha.

During the first two weeks of August,
Grade 7 GP learners understood the
formation of rocks and reasons for
differences in colour and texture by
comparing them to different types of
chocolates. Next, they learnt about the
transformations rocks undergo, by
playing the rock cycle game.
The concept of weathering was
introduced by demonstrating the
changes a cube of sugar undergoes
when exposed to physical, chemical
and biological stimuli.
Overall, learning made fun!

collaboration and communication skills
via the GP topic, Digital World. The
learners collaborated in teams, to come
up with a plan for a school of the future,
which was then presented using a
mindmap.

grade 1 visited the
NSS Balwadi. The
purpose of the visit
was to understand
that there are
various factors
that influence a
persons
behaviour/lifestyle.
The students of Grade 3 visited the Dr.
Bhau Daji Lad Museum. The purpose of
the visit was to view the different maps
of Mumbai and understand that maps
are a valuable resource. They also
understood the history of how maps of
Mumbai have evolved.

The visit to the Nehru Science centre was
an enriching on for the grade 5 students.
They were able to explore various system
in human body and were able to develop
and appreciation of the
interconnectedness and functionality of
all our internal organs. Students reflect,
thought and wondered about the marvel
that is the human body and its intricacies
The students of Grade V visited
the BMC’ D’ Ward in connection
with their unit. They had the
privilege of interacting with the
Assistant Commissioner of ‘D
Ward, Mr Vishvas Mote who was
gracious enough to provide the
students with an insight into the
roles and responsibilities of the
BMC. The students played their
part as responsible citizens and
discussed issues and solutions
with the commissioner with an
open-mind.
