PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Education Week – Every student, every voice Week 3 Term 3 each year heralds a celebration in public schools of the exciting educational journey of each of our students, of the inspiring learning activities and achievements taking place in every classroom across the state, and this year of the Voices of our learners. On Monday a large number of our students travelled by bus to Castle Towers shopping centre to perform for an adoring crowd of our Ironbark Ridge community members, as well as other shoppers. Ironbark Parents and friends who were able to attend our special Open Day Concert on Tuesday listened to the voices of students from all grades explaining “What makes a good learner at Ironbark Ridge?” We heard many different answers… some indicating that ‘being good’ is a pre-requisite behaviour for being a good learner – perhaps a sensible traditional view. in another fun celebration of public education. The light-hearted competition was Newcombe Ball – a bit like volleyball – and there were definitely more giggles than points scored Consistent with our strategic efforts to reduce disruption and maximise our time engaged in learning we think we have achieved a nice balance this year in Education Week – a cynic from another school remarked “Yeah, Education Week… the week we get the least educating done.” Your next opportunity to join us at Ironbark Ridge will be during Week 8 for our Grandparents Day and Book Character Parade.

The Ironbark Way… Our Student Leadership Team are an important first foray for us into authentically listening to our students’ voices and employing student ‘agency’ across our school. One of the team’s major tasks is to grow and develop our positive and excellent school culture – the way we do things here at Ironbark Ridge! Our Culture Creators team are developing some catch-cries and phrases that express what we like most about our great school, and what it looks like to act and behave in… The Ironbark Way. As mentioned on Tuesday in my brief monologue to our concert audience, young learners need modelling and guidance about all manner of choices and decisions about which ‘way’ to behave and act. The purpose of

culture and tradition is to provide a map to follow and repeat when we are in new situations beyong our current learning. The more explicit we are about what we

expect, what it looks and sounds like, and the right way to do it, the more success our inexperienced will have. In order to ensure we have confident, successful, inspired learners at Ironbark Ridge, we need to create and tell the narrative of

our culture, our expectations, and … The Ironbark Way.

Super Suzy Late last week Suzanna (6/5M) travelled to the School Sports Australia Swimming Championships in Melbourne to compete against the best 10 year olds in the nation. She swam super-fast and achieved awesome results… see the special report later in this newsletter. We are all so proud to have such an outstanding competitor, hard worker and humble champion in our school. Congratulations to Suzy, an inspirational Ironbarker!

Goal-Setting (the next Successful Learner Habit) A Successful Learner will work towards goals set by their teachers, parents and learning guides. They will also set their own realistic goals based on the current level of their achievement and next steps for personal growth. Successful Learners work enthusiastically and optimistically towards their goals. They backwards map from what they want to achieve to plan the steps they will need to take to get there, then stick to the task, constantly evaluating their progress and planning the direction and size of the next jump they need to make. Goal-Setters are change agents, passionate, and see challenges as an opportunity to make progress towards their targets. A result of GOAL-SETTING is being organised, planned, and prepared to grab opportunities for growth and learning. As half-yearly Reports have recently gone home and are fresh in students' minds this is a great time to be setting goals for the second semester of the year. Students should be realistic, clear and specific with their goals.

Help@Home: Deliberate Practice… supporting a Growth Mindset Deliberate practice refers to a special, focused type of practice that is purposeful, systematic and strategic. It is more than just mindless repetition. Deliberate practice is done with the specific goal of improving performance and we must remain aware of how we are going through feedback, eg. precise measurements... or we can get caught into the trap of simply repeating what has become automatic, and this can actually reinforce our mistakes or inefficiencies. Keeping our attention on growth and improvement is crucial.

Page 3: Newsletter 2019 - ironbarkrg-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · Help@Home: Deliberate Practice… supporting a Growth Mindset Deliberate practice refers to a special, focused type of practice

Encourage your children to achieve mastery at something of their choice. The process of growth and improvement through deliberate practice can be instructional and rewarding in so many ways. I remember clearly a conversation with the father of student in my class almost ten years ago, during a Parent-Teacher interview. I had become slightly frustrated with the student constantly ‘playing’ with a Rubik’s cube, and suggested that if the student were to direct similar time and attention to writing, perhaps current underperformance could be rectified. The response surprised and instructed me. To achieve mastery of any task requires dedication, focus, persistence and self-belief. The rewards are intrinsic and remarkably powerful, especially when the desire to achieve is entirely owned by the student. The student’s father was proud of the dedication, persistence, strategic learning, delayed gratification (focus), openness to feedback on performance and growth shown… and confident in the way his child had taken complete ownership of the process. This could be repeated in the future with whatever his child put their mind to! On reflection, I had to strongly agree! Interestingly, these processes are all significant aspects of online and electronic game play! This may be why we hear talk about the ‘gamification’ of certain pursuits and tasks in work and life generally. Don’t think I’m advocating further screen/device time, Ironbarkers! The opposite is true. I think we should in fact, as parents and guides of our children’s learning, highlight the deliberate practice and mastery aspect of our children’s gaming, and directly relate it to other pursuits of mastery in the real world. Make your child choose one ‘real world’ mastery project for every ‘project’ in the virtual realm… and have our children compare their success in each as feedback to self. Through the process of deliberate practice, our children will not only improve their performance over time, but also learn the value of successful learner habits that research and evidence show will have a major positive impact in their future lives as citizens of this world.

More Ironbarker student success The most recent news from Ironbarkers out in the community achieving great things… Carter (2D, right) recently ran his socks off and finished in 1st place in the Under 7 boys’ race at the Little As NSW Cross-Country Championships. Wow! He looks like a solid chance in next year’s Ironbark Ridge 8/9yrs boys cross-country race! Awesome effort, Carter! Hayden (2C, left) competed at the NSW Interschools Snowboarding Championships and has progressed to the finals day. This event will be held on 20th August at Perisher. All the best, Hayden!

A consistent parenting ‘Storyline’ Whether living together or separated, parenting is less effective if our children do not get a consistent message. Given our focus on developing our narrative about ‘The Ironbark Way’, it strikes me as a good time to consider the question: How is it done in your family? Michael Grose, parenting expert, has provided his thoughts and ideas about ways we can work together as a family to develop a consistent storyline, almost like having a clear family culture to guide our children as they negotiate the many and various decisions they need to make about their behaviour and values. Have a read… a bit later in the newsletter.

Traffic Lights… The latest information from RMS and Hills Shire Council about the traffic signals for our students and other pedestrians crossing Withers Rd at Ironbark Ridge Rd is for a late September completion… hopefully ready for Term 4. Please continue to approach this intersection with great care both as pedestrians and in your vehicles. Yours in partnership, Nick Thomson Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Open Day There was a great sense of pride experienced at Ironbark Ridge on Tuesday as we celebrated Open Day with our families and community. We would like to thank everyone who attended and trust that you had a wonderful time visiting our classrooms, engaging in our dynamic learning and viewing our performances both at school and Castle Towers. The theme of this year’s Education

Week was Every Student, Every Voice. It was a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens. We extend a big thank you to all our students, staff and the Ironbark Ridge Community for your ongoing support for our Open Day including all those who supported behind the scenes.

Getting in the game Staff from a number of schools in the Hills area united to play a friendly game of Newcombe Ball at Sherwood Ridge on Thursday afternoon. Although we did not win the round we enjoyed developing our ongoing friendship being able to have fun and a laugh with our colleagues.

Leadership Opportunities A focus for our Year 5 students this term who may be considering trying out for formal leadership positions in 2020. 6 tips which will assist parents in helping their child to be a student leader may include:

1. Don’t talk to your child about leadership positions, talk about leadership opportunities 2. Encourage your child to be involved in everything 3. Encourage your child to solve problems 4. Help your child with their presentation skills 5. Do community service with your child 6. Encourage your child to take responsibility

The aim of ‘being chosen’ should not be the goal of any leader, rather the view that by serving and contributing in a school community your child will develop life-long leadership skills. At Ironbark Ridge PS we offer formal leadership training in personal and organisational leadership skills. If your child is thinking of trying out for any of our formal leadership positions we encourage them to attend training. Mrs Barton is running formal leadership training during lunchtimes.

Kindergarten enrolments in 2020 It is at this time that we begin our preparation for our new students who will be starting Kindergarten next year. We encourage parents to start planning the transition from preschool to primary school. It is important to have a conversation with your local preschools to discuss preparedness and how best to transition your child. We will be holding a Kindergarten 2020 Parent Information Evening on Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 – 7:30pm. Office staff members are also available to assist parents with enquiries associated with Application for Enrolment forms. SAS Staff Recognition Week 6 2019 Our SAS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter a school and are essential in maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community. SAS staff work in school offices, in classrooms and libraries as well as maintaining and caring for school grounds and buildings. They are often the ones who tend to students when they are unwell, and they ensure the efficient management of school’s financial and administration functions. At Ironbark Ridge we will be recognising our staff in Week 6. It is our way to thank these amazing people for their dedication and service to our school and community. If you visit during Week 6 please pop into the office and let our SAS staff know what a valuable role they play in making Ironbark a very special school. Kerry De Jager and Kylie Robson (Relieving) Deputy Principals

ADMINISTRATION As our Parent Information Evening is coming up soon for Kindergarten enrolments, we are taking enrolments for kindergarten students for 2020. Enrolment forms are available on the school website. Hard copies are available from the school office. Please check our website for the required documentation to support your child’s enrolment. Unfortunately, enrolments cannot be accepted if the documentation is incomplete. For kindergarten siblings of current students, please keep in mind that our catchment area has changed significantly due to the opening of the new North Kellyville Public School this year. You may find that your address no longer falls into our catchment area. If your address is no longer within our catchment area, you will need to fill out a Non-Local Application which can also be found on our website under “About Our School”, then “Enrolments”. You can check your address on the School Finder system: https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder We look forward to welcoming your child to Ironbark Ridge Public School in 2020.

Just a gentle reminder that all school fees for Term 3 are due next Friday 16th August. Thank you to those families who have already paid.

Kindy Capers

What a busy time we are having in Kindergarten – chickens arriving, dancers and choir students performing, split pea plants growing on our windows, trips to the garden to study living things, parent visits to our classrooms, parent/teacher interviews and all of our usual lessons! It’s exhausting to think about but the students are taking it all in their stride. It was wonderful to chat with parents at our recent interviews. We hope parents found it a worthwhile experience and felt as proud of their child’s achievements as the teachers do. Kindergarten is an exciting year and student growth is high, celebrate all the successes with your child! This year they have become readers, writers and mathematicians!!

Chicks!! There was a definite buzz in the air when the chicks arrived this week. Each class has their own chick pen and incubator and the excitement when an egg hatches has been lovely to see. They are with us for another week and we are looking forward to watching them grow. Chicks are available in pairs for adoption at the end of next week. Please see Mrs Sexton if you are interested.

We are extremely proud of our Kindergarten performers who have performed at Castle Towers and the school open day this week. Our

dancers did a wonderful job in their gorgeous monster costumes and the choir sang beautifully. This term we have Kindergarten classes hosting the school assembly. In Week 4 - Kindergarten Gundagai and their buddy class 3C, Week 6 - Kindergarten Kirribilli and their buddy class 4P and in Week 9 - Kindergarten Dandenong and their buddy class 4/3B. Assembly takes place on Wednesday at 2.20pm, all parents are welcome to attend. Our excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm is fast approaching and will take place on Thursday 22nd August. Payment and notes are due by Friday 16th August. A reminder that students are required to wear their school sports uniform with their school jacket and hat. Recess and lunch should be sent in a plastic bag, clearly marked with your child’s name. Drink bottles should be disposable. The students and teachers are looking forward to a great day.

Stage 1 Snippets Education Week On Tuesday, we opened our classroom doors for Education Week. It was with much enthusiasm and excitement that many students welcomed their parents, grandparents and special guests to share their learning with them. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to see a snippet of what a day is like in year 1 and 2.

Page 13: Newsletter 2019 - ironbarkrg-p.schools.nsw.gov.au · Help@Home: Deliberate Practice… supporting a Growth Mindset Deliberate practice refers to a special, focused type of practice

Congratulations to our K-2 choir and Stage 1 dance groups for your impressive performances this week at both Castle Towers and our open day concert. You blew us away with your impressive moves and angelic voices!

1R, 1J and 1CB Excursion A reminder to parents in 1R, IJ and 1CB that our excursion to Sydney Observatory and Susannah Place Museum is coming up on Friday 30th August. A new note with all the details was sent home this week. Please note that we require a new permission note to be returned with the revised date on it. Please return these to your classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Stationery Supplies Please check with your child if they require any new stationery supplies as these tend to run out at this time of the year. In particular, we are often short of lead pencils and glue sticks. Thank you. Congratulations A huge congratulations to Carter of 2D who on Saturday won the under7’s State Little Athletics Cross Country event. What an achievement – we are very proud of you!

Stage 2 Snippets

What an amazing week we have had so far celebrating Education week! This year the theme was ‘Every student, every voice.’ Our Ironbark learners have had many discussions amongst their peers and teachers about what it means to be a good learner at Ironbark. How fantastic it is to hear each student voice their opinion on what they think a good Ironbark learner is. Having this picture of what a good learner looks like helps students understand what they need to do or continue to do to achieve this. Thank you to all Stage 2 families who joined us for Open Day on Tuesday. Every classroom was buzzing with excitement as students were able to participate in a variety of activities and share their learning with family members. We are so proud of the Stage 2 students and their ability to continue to learn whilst there are many other activities happening around them. This week has seen our Stage 2 star performers showcasing their dancing and singing abilities. They were amazing at the Open Day performance as well as outstanding ambassadors for Ironbark Ridge Public School at Castle Towers.

This fortnight our whole school focus is ‘goal setting.’ There has been many discussions in class rooms around goals and what a SMART goal looks like. Students are thinking about and planning goals for their own growth but also making sure they are realistic and measurable.

The new Student Representative Council members were inducted last week and we know they will represent not only their class but the whole stage just as well as the outgoing SRC members. It is important that students have a voice in school in order to suggest positive changes and ideas. The SRC allows students to implement change in a respectful manner and develop leadership qualities through this formal system.

Just some reminders: All notes and payments for Be Skilled Be Fit sessions and the Stage 2 excursion to ‘Walkabout Wildlife Park’ are due BEFORE Friday 16th August. It is imperative that notes and payments are made by this date to ensure your child does not miss out on the fantastic activities planned. The notes were sent with your term invoice to families’ emails. They are also found on the school website in the notes section.

Stage 3 Snippets Term 3 may have got off to a chilly start, but with all the expected activity in Stage 3, things will soon ‘heat up’! We are looking forward to a term filled with interesting activities, riveting topics and plenty of fun and laughter….and, of course, incredible learning experiences. At Parent Interviews, it was a good chance to meet you all and discuss your children’s progress. Thank you for making the time to see us.

Education Week meant that we opened our classrooms to the families of our students. Thank you to those parents/grandparents who were able to come along and engage in a collaborative activity with their children. It was lovely to see the ideas and planning that went into the various mazes, with a fair bit of fun and competition enjoyed by all. Our dance group and choir then entertained us at the concert. What a lot of work they have put in. It was lovely to see their smiles as they performed, as well as the smiles on the faces in the audience. They also performed at Castle Towers, entertaining shoppers and parents. Thank you to the teachers who organised everything – your students did you proud! Our internal transition program for all Year 6 students has begun. This program has been set up to prepare our students for high school, making their transition smoother when the time comes. The students have received their timetables, along with the instructions of what is expected over the course of the term. This program has helped previous students to settle more quickly into their new environments, with a better understanding of what differences to expect when they start high school. The Year 6 group are also starting to prepare for their annual Fun Day, so please be aware that they may be asking for donations of certain items . Be Skilled Be Fit Gymnastics has got off to a springing start. Balance beams, chin-up bars, trampolines and springboards are just some of the equipment on which our students have honed their skills. This fantastic program is aimed at further developing agility and skills. Please remember that all payments and notes for this worthwhile activity are due by next Friday – 16 August. Just a reminder to all Stage 3 students to please bring in empty, clean softdrink bottles (1litre – 2litre bottles) as soon as possible. As we’re conscious about reusing and recycling, these bottles will be used in science experiments and then reused in a different way in a design task. Thereafter, we can recycle what’s left. Once again, we thank you for supporting and encouraging your child. We have set goals and are working towards achieving them within a given timeframe.

CANTEEN We are getting a lot of parents asking what to do with these Bidgeree Awards. It is a $5.00 voucher and you can order any lunch item, up to that value, or you can add additional money if you would like something extra with it. For those who have been lucky enough to get one, just write what your child would like to order on the back of it and hand it over the counter that morning (not at recess or lunch), so we can order their lunch for that day. You cannot use these through Flexischools or to purchase things at recess or lunch. It is for a lunch order ONLY. We hope this is helpful. Any questions, see us in the canteen.

Its that time of year again – Fresh for Kids competition! Eat Fresh and Win Each time a child orders or buys a piece of fruit or a meal containing vegetables, we will give them an entry form.

Collect 2 stickers on your entry form then submit your completed entry form to the canteen to receive a scented stamper pen and bonus prize entry card. We will also accept fruit or veggies that have been brought in from home to have for Crunch & Sip. If the child comes in the morning and shows Doris their fruit or veggies, they will receive an entry form and stickers as well. All entry forms will be collected and sent to Fresh for Kids by Friday 20th Septeber 2-19 for a chance to win one o fht emajor prizes. Good luck! And happy healthy eating. Doris and Mel.

P & C

Notice of P&C Committee Meeting 14 August 2019

All parents and carers are welcome to attend the P&C meeting for Term 3 which will be held on 14 August at 7:00pm in the school library. Attending this meeting is a great opportunity to meet other parents and become involved in the school community at Ironbark Ridge Public School. It also provides an opportunity to gain valuable insight into what is happening at the school and what can be expected in the year ahead. The P&C committee currently has a Vice President’s position vacant. If you are interested in this role or joining the P&C come to the meeting next week. P&C Membership fee is $2 a year and we encourage you to join so that you can have a say in your school. This is the last meeting before the AGM on the 27 November2019. We are looking for new IRPS families to take on a more active role in the P&C in 2020. This is a good opportunity to meet the team and see what it is we do and how you can help. All parents are welcome. We look forward to seeing you there.

SCHOOL BANKING UPDATE

As of next Tuesday we will be moving over to an electronic reward token system. Due to the overwhelming success of the School Banking program we have decided to use the Commonwealth Bank School Banking Portal to track tokens electronically and no longer issue physical tokens making it easier for parents and the volunteers. This system was introduced by the Commonwealth Bank last year however we decided at the time not to transition over as our numbers were manageable and the kids liked receiving the tokens. As we continue to grow in numbers we have decided it is now the right time to change over. So how do you track your tokens? The Commonwealth Bank has created an App so that you can track your tokens on the CommBank Youth App or you can use the Savings Tracker sheet. The App is a fun, secure way for your child to learn digital money skills. They can:

Check their Youthsaver account balance View their School Banking deposits in their transaction history Track how many Dollarmites tokens they’ve earned Set savings goals and track progress Create a list of chores/jobs they can do to earn pocket money

Getting started

1. Download the CommBank Youth app on any iOS 9+ device (only available on Apple devices)

2. Your child can log on using their NetBank client number and password. You can set this up when you apply for their Youthsaver account. If your child already has a Youthsaver account and needs a NetBank client number and password, visit a CommBank branch with your identification and your child’s birth certificate. Alternatively, if you can see your child’s account in your NetBank or CommBank app, you can set this up online. Go to http://www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking for more details.

What do you do with your existing tokens? If your kids have any tokens in their banking books they are welcome to keep them to play with, however please remove them from their banking books. If you want to return them they can bring them to banking next week as we can donate them to the school to use in class. Ordering your prize? We will notify students each week at banking when they are eligible to redeem a reward.

Have earning tokens or rewards changed? No, how you earn a token does not change. You still earn one electronic token every time you make a School Banking deposit. You need to have made 10 School Banking deposits to redeem a reward. Tokens never expire. If you don’t have enough tokens at the end of any year, you can save them for the next year, until you have 10 tokens to redeem for a reward item. Even if you change schools we can rolled them over for you if you let us know. Tokens cannot be pooled between, or given to, siblings or friends to get rewards faster. The School Banking rewards program is designed to reward individual savings. If you forget to put your School Banking in one week, you are unable to make 2 deposits the following week for 2 tokens. Maximum of one deposit/one token per week. All rewards are available to order from the term listed and are offered only while stocks last. It takes up to 2 weeks from the time your rewards are ordered until they arrive at school. Prizes can be collected on School Banking day. Any prizes not collected will be distributed to the classrooms via the office within the week. How can you help us?

To assist us in the transition could you please explain to your children that they will no longer be receiving the silver tokens and that’s okay as there is a new and easier way of keeping a track of their tokens.

You can download the App or print out the Saving Tracker sheet and show them how they can track their tokens.

Thank you

Mishelle Young School Banking Co-ordinator
