Whilst a few senior students were scuba-diving, another group of junior students helped clean the foreshore. It was a fantastic and very productive day and we all enjoyed being outdoors. We did get a bit wet in the morning but the day fined up and we were able to have a BBQ in the sun at the Twin Towns park. Our students never fail to amaze me with their enthusiasm and willingness to help a good cause. Picking up rubbish reminded us of two things; one; Our environment is fragile and as more and more litter can be found in nature, reducing it should be a priority. And two; Looking after our land and ocean is our collective responsibility. The rubbish that we found today was dropped by a human hand. Luckily, we have the Green Team to help keep our coastline clean, a little bit at a time. Thank you Team! Mrs Monniot-Kerr - Green Team Coordinator.

SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTMonday evening we held an information night for year 6 students and their parents; introducing them to the school’s many programs.

Prospective students and their parents were escorted on a tour of the school by our SRC students, who displayed excellent leadership and teamwork, responding to a variety of questions about High School life and allaying the fears that many children have about the move from Primary school.

Seeing the opportunities provided by the school through the eyes of our students gives the most important perspective on the success of a school in nurturing teenagers to face the challenges of the present, while equipping them with the skills to succeed in the future. In discussing the school our leaders focussed on the safe and supportive environment within the school along with their opportunities to develop a wide range of academic skills. Sporting opportunities are always something our students highlight and, while we value the long term health benefits of participating in sport, our students also learn valuable skills in teamwork, organisation and leadership through their participation in varied sporting pursuits.

As teachers, we strive to support our students in developing skills to think independently and to make decisions based on reason, supported by evidence, rather than on emotion. Therefore, it was beautiful to receive a message from a member of our graduating class of 2019, who has been inspired to study journalism as a result of her studies in Society and Culture with the aim of providing an honest and well-balanced telling of the news.

To hear that we have inspired students to pursue their passion and to make the world a better place is the ultimate accomplishment for any educational institution. In recent weeks we have been privileged to hear many inspirational stories from our graduates. Caleb Howard is in his final year of Computer Engineering at Griffith University and has been selected to represent his University in the International algorithm competition. Gemma Borra recently graduated from Bond University with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and was awarded the prestigious 2020 Soheil Abedian Medal of Excellence.

Our 2020 graduating class are now embarking on the next step of their education and employment journeys. Students are pursuing apprenticeships and traineeships in areas such as earth moving, beauty and glazing. Some students began University early in the year, undertaking condensed pathways through a trimester study program, allowing them to complete a three year degree in two years, including Courtney Collison who is studying Bio Medicine. Other students have embarked on University study this week, in courses such as Business, Nursing, Psychology and Education.

I am incredibly proud of our graduates and of the teachers who nurtured them throughout their time at school ensuring they left with the skills to pursue their dreams. Our students leave Tweed River High School not only with the academic skills for success, but more importantly a capacity for emotional intelligence and resilience that will support them throughout their lives.

Ms Leisa Conroy, Principal

LIBRARY NEWSThe library has been a very busy place lately despite the fact that our air-con is undergoing repair. Students come to the library to read, to play chess or Uno and of course to study. Remember that tutors are available every Tuesday and Friday if you need one on one help.

Our manga collection is very popular this year. If you haven't read a graphic novel before, please come and grab one.... they are so much fun to read!

Remember that the Reading Challenge has started and that you have all year to read 15 books. We love to reward our readers and if you want to take part, just keep reading and add your books to your reading log (kept in the library). Good luck!
