Inside this issue:
Principal’s Message
Hello everyone.
Mrs Mikkelsen has been having some time off this week because she has been sick, but she will be
back later in the week.
BOOK WEEK
We have been very busy recently with many activities associated with Book Week taking place.
Classes will be going to the community Library to listen to a number of prominent children’s authors
and on Tuesday nearly all the students and teachers dressed up as their favourite characters from
literature and paraded around the quadrangle.
KISS AND DRIVE
Mrs Ellery is developing a set of guidelines for parents and students at the Kiss and Drive area. We
are still seeing some children attempting to open car doors before the cars have fully stopped and
the potential for serious harm is readily apparent.
AFTER SCHOOL IN THE PLAYGROUND
We are pleased to have students utilising the playground equipment after school, but parents are
reminded that we need to close the gates by 4.00 pm and that parents must supervise their
children’s behaviour while they are there. Children are not permitted to play unless their parents are
there and supervising them.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Preparations for our Athletics Carnival which will be held during the week of 4 September are well
advanced, with all of the children practising hard. If anyone would like to assist, Ali Davies would love
to hear from you.
NAPLAN RESULTS
Finally, we will be receiving NAPLAN results very soon and reports for the children in Year 3 and Year 5
will be distributed in the near future. Bob Parker

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN 2018
Parents are asked to complete the form in this newsletter and place it in the letterbox in the front
office by Tuesday, 22 August 2017 (it is not necessary for those students returning to complete the
form as it will be assumed that you be attending in 2018).
LIBRARY OPEN DURING LUNCH
From 14 August our library will be open to students as an alternative area to spend lunch. There will
be the opportunity for students to be part of a Chess Club, boards games and reading.
CHESS SET REQUIRED
We are wondering if any family would be able to donate a new or second-hand chess set to the
school for us to use in our Chess Club.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN IS BACK!
Ardross Primary is taking part in the Woolworths Earn & Learn Program. Through this program we will be able to get new
educational resources for our school by shopping for your groceries at Woolworths. For every $10 spent, you will earn
one sticker. Collect your stickers and either put them in the box located in the front office at school or in the box just
outside the checkouts at Garden City. Anyone from the school community can collect stickers – staff, parents,
grandparents, neighbours and friends. The program will be running until 19 September 2017.
SPORT REPORT FROM MISS DAVIES
ATHLETICS
Factions are practicing all things athletics for our carnival, which is scheduled for Week 8.
Tuesday, 5 September: Jumps, Throws, 200m, 400m, Circular Relay
Friday, 8 September: Carnival Day!
We urgently require parent helpers for both Tuesday and Friday; this event can’t go ahead without parent help. Please
contact me via email [email protected] if you can assist on either of these days.
It is important for you to let your faction teacher know if you won’t be at school on either of our carnival days so that
planning can accommodate.
NATIONAL SCHOOL SPORTS CROSS COUNTRY - HOBART 2017
By Ky H - Year 6
On Friday, 11 August we attended the Rokeby Police Academy, the location for this year’s National Cross Country
Championships. We attended the opening ceremony, which was also our first look and walk through the 3km
course. Our individual races were held on Saturday, 12 August at 9:30am, where the temperature was sitting at 6
degrees and winds were at 100km per hour, weather that no one was used to running in. The weather was so bad
that we had to leave the start line and return to the marshalling area with the race finally starting when they
realised conditions weren’t going to get much better! I finished 26th (middle of the pack), close behind two other
WA team members. On Monday, 14 August we had our team relays, where 5 out of 6 of the Under 11 Boys ran in
the team. We all ran a 1500m leg and I was the third runner. It was pouring with rain and very cold once again. WA
finished in 5th place overall, with some very tough competition. I had the best time, met some awesome friends and
will have some everlasting memories from this incredible trip. Lastly, I would like to thank the P&C and all the others
who contributed towards my experience.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - ASHTON SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
As part of our commitment to promote reading, we will be holding an Ashton Scholastic Book Fair on Friday,
8 September between the hours of 8.30am and 3.30pm. This year’s theme is ‘Reading Rainforest - Go Wild for Books!’
during the book fair your children can purchase quality material. We urge you to visit the Book Fair. You’ll be sharing in
the magic of choosing new books and encouraging your children to read. Our school will benefit from sales and
obtain extra resources for your children. So join in the fun. Mark the date now on your calendar and help our school
enjoy this wonderful event.

ROOM 13 - YEAR 1 ASSEMBLY
The children have been learning about the Noongar culture this term, and Mrs Bishop taught us the song ‘I Can Sing a Rainbow’ in Noongar. We sang it in English and Noongar at our assembly on 10 August.
In preparation, the students coloured a large Wagyl using the colours of the rainbow. They learned that in summer, the Rainbow Snake lives quietly in a giant waterhole, and during the wet season, it moves up into the sky where it
becomes a rainbow. The children also decorated lizards and goannas in the style of aboriginal dot paintings.
Everyone wore colourful clothes on the day, and were eager to introduce the speakers at the assembly. Sanjana
told the audience that this is the Noongar season of djilba, a time when we experience cold, clear nights and rain,
with the days gradually becoming warmer.
The next day, we wrote a recount of our colourful presentation at the assembly.
Luca wrote ‘I was nervous because everyone was looking at me but when my parents came to the assembly, I felt
better’.
Chloe M wrote ‘It was fun at our assembly because I spoke on the microphone’.
Sienna wrote the Noongar words for the colours of the rainbow – mirda, yoornt, mirda-djardak, nodjam, mirda-wooyan, mirda-yoornt, wooyan.
Jake wrote that the aboriginal children would sit around the campfire listening to the adults telling stories about the Dreamtime. In this way, they learned about their culture and how they were expected to behave.

BOOK WEEK VISIT BY ROBYN BETTS
BOOK WEEK PARADE PHOTOS
ROOM 16
Miss Brown and her Kindy/Pre-Primary class in Room 16 would like to thank the P & C for granting their application to
purchase some new chairs and an Active Play Table for the classroom. The extra chairs complete the set for the whole
class to use. Our Active Play Table has been very popular and gives the children in Room 15 and 16 extra activities to
engage in at outside time.
ROOM 10 - HIGH SCHOOL BUDDIES
Last week a group of students came to our room to do some activities with year ones relating to their studies of
cognitive development in young children. The interaction between the two age groups was lovely to see and it was
hard to know which group enjoyed it more.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS
The Entertainment Book fundraiser has now finished for 2017. If you would still like to order a book (either hard copy or
digital) please contact the Entertainment Book office in Osborne Park and be sure to mention Ardross Primary School.
Many thanks to everyone who purchased a book as we have raised over $1,000 for our school.
