Student Safety and Collecting and Dropping Off All parents are reminded about the importance of placing student safety as the number one priority when dropping off or picking up students from school. A letter was emailed to all school families yesterday, reminding families of the procedures for dropping off and collecting students if they are travelling to school by car. Start of Term 3, 2018 School resumes for all GVGS students on Tuesday 24th July 2018. Enjoy the holiday break.

Parent pick up and drop off for students The school is committed to acting in the best interest of children and keeping them safe from harm. No doubt families are aware of the large number of students that arrive and depart from GVGS by bus each day. This presents a number of challenges not the least of which is ensuring that this is done in a safe manner. We are aware that as recently as last week one of our students endeavouring to access a car at the front of the school crossed in front of an arriving bus. Whilst it is understood that the front car park is congested at times, although in broad terms the congestion occurs mainly between 3.25 and 3.35 each evening, it clearly is the safest options for student to access vehicles other than buses. We ask for families to use the car park to drop students off and to collect them from there. It is not safe for parents to drop off or pick up students anywhere in the bus area.

Mr Leon McLeod, Deputy Principal

End of Semester Reports During the Semester break families will receive the end of semester report. This report contains concentrated information for each subject such as a global grade and evaluations regarding student work habits. The report will also include a tutor comment regarding academic progress and pastoral information as well as a certificate which celebrates student involvement in the co-curricular programme. More specific comments for learning goals and academic progress for key assessment tasks are accessible via the portal. As the portal provides students and parents with an indication of student attainment along with specific improvement strategies, we strongly encourage parents to read the portal comments. These will remain visible until the end of Week 1 Term 3. Parents are reminded that academic achievement standards from Years 7-11 have been set at a challenging level. Indicative SAC grades for students in Year 12 are provided using a scale of Excellent through to Very Low. Rubrics provided to students will provide more information about the range of marks allocated to each of these learning standards. The report and the portal comments provide parents and students with an opportunity to reflect on performance and progress for the semester as well as to set goals for next semester. All students and their families are encouraged to reflect on feedback provided regarding academic progress, especially where examinations were undertaken, as this is one of the most significant factors in assisting students with their learning journey and achievement. Students in Years 9-11 will be selecting subjects for 2019 next term, so careful consideration as to progress made thus far this year is a relevant factor in making such decisions. If you have any queries regarding reporting, please feel free to contact us at the school directly. Mrs Debbie Moore, Director of Teaching & Learning

Equestrian upcoming I would like to wish Ms Laura Pankhurst all the best, as she takes the equestrian team, consisting of Georgina Belcher, Nicholas Grant, Sophie Belcher and Olivia Bolton to the Elmore Equestrian Club EA Interschool Qualifier, during the school holidays on the 7th and 8th July. Property Matters The school recently engaged a professional arborist to undertake a full audit of the school’s 900 trees. This extensive work has resulted in a detailed report on the health of every tree on our site, including recommended works to maximise the tree’s health and longevity. The report is now being followed up with these works, starting with removing a small number of dead trees and working through those requiring significant pruning. Preliminary work has been undertaken to fully air condition the gymnasium. Support structures have been installed and an electrical upgrade is scheduled for the upcoming school holiday period. The mechanical system is then scheduled for installation in the October school holidays, to be ready for use over the summer period. This is a major logistical and financial project and has been made possible due to the generous financial assistance from both the Parents and Friends Association and Mothers Club. The Board has approved an upgrade to the entrance to the main building (eastern end). This is a major thoroughfare for students; it is also a highly visible part of the school from Verney Road and for visitors entering our site. The design is aesthetically pleasing, provides additional shelter and is generally more functional. It is in same style as the music centre and we expect this to commence late in 2018 or early 2019. The Board is heavily focused on the overall long term development of our site, including sewerage, traffic management and general and specialist facilities. Forecast growth of Shepparton will provide both challenges and opportunities and the Board is planning our development accordingly.

Tuckshop During term 3 we are expecting to introduce some enhancements to tuck shop ordering and paying. Early in the term we expect to have EFTPOS payment available in the tuckshop. This means students will be able to pay by card if this is more convenient for families. We will also be introducing on-line lunch ordering via the Qkr application. We expect to be trialling this shortly and offering it to families later in term 3. Cash payments and ordering with lunch bags will continue to be available, however families will have greater choice with these matters. The school’s tuckshop was recently the subject of the feature article in the State Government’s Heathy Eating Advisory Services publication. The article highlighted the initiatives taken by our staff to maximise healthy eating options and encourage students to purchase these. The full article can be read at http://heas.health.vic.gov.au/schools/case-studies/goulburn-valley-grammar-school Congratulations to Marlene, Mary, Sherril, Catherine, Leiticia, Lisa and Rohan, together with all our dedicated volunteers! Mr Kim Stokie, Business Manager

Year 12 Matters The last few weeks have been very hectic for our Year 12 students. Students have officially commenced Academic Semester Two, meaning that all students have well and truly turned their focus to their Unit Four subjects. I encourage all students and parents to read the comments and feedback teachers have placed on the Parent Portal with regards to Unit Three work. Reflection on effort, progress and achievement during this time is a powerful tool for students as they plan to embark on the final 11 and a bit weeks of formal academic classes. It is important to note though, that the Year 12 students need to make the most of the upcoming holiday break to ensure that the are up to date in each subject and return in Term Three ready to make the most of each opportunity in the very short time they have remaining. Allocating specific days to study during the break is a great idea. Sticking to a normal school timetable for part of the three-week break is a good way of ensuring that every subject is given due attention and the least-favoured or more challenging subjects are not missed. It is also just as important that all students do take some time out for rest and relaxation during the holidays. Term Three of Year 12 will be the busiest term that students embark on and most students will work through the September holidays in preparation for the subsequent End of Year Examinations. So I encourage all Year 12 students make the most of the July break to refresh before the final academic campaign. There have been some fantastic Year 12 highlights in the last few weeks including Out of Uniform Days, a number of Concerts, Tutorial Challenges and the ICCES Winter Tour. The Year 12 students strongly support this Carnival in all sports; Basketball, Hockey, Netball and Soccer. The school would like to thank the many Year 12 students who have participated in or assisted with this event throughout their time at the school. It was very exciting for our Year 12 students to lead the school in winning the overall 2018 ICCES Winter Tour Cup. Congratulations.

Health News “It's About Time”- National Diabetes Week 8-14 July 2018 In 2018, National Diabetes Week will continue to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and early treatment for all types of diabetes as part of the "It's About Time" campaign. Too many Australians are being diagnosed with diabetes too late. This is true for both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The delay in diagnosis is putting many people at risk of major life threatening health problems. “It’s About Time” we detected all types of diabetes earlier and save lives. Knowing the early signs of Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Every year around 640 Australians end up very sick and in hospital with dangerous high blood glucose levels because the early signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes are not recognised in time. If not diagnosed in time, type 1 diabetes can be fatal. Everyone should know the early signs – the 4 Ts of Type 1 diabetes. What are the 4Ts The 4Ts are the early warning signs of type 1 diabetes. They are: Thirsty - are they really thirsty and unable to quench

that thirst? Toilet – are they going to the toilet a lot? Tired - are they more tired than usual? Thinner - have they recently lost weight? Detecting type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose). Many people with type 2 diabetes will live with the condition for up to 7 years before it is diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes is a serious, progressive and complex condition with complications including vision loss, kidney damage, heart attacks, stroke and limb amputation. By the time they are diagnosed, half of all people will have already developed at least one serious diabetes-related complication. Much of this damage is preventable if type 2 diabetes is diagnosed earlier. Initially, type 2 diabetes can often be managed with healthy eating and regular physical activity. Over time most people with type 2 diabetes will also need tablets and many will eventually require insulin. It is important to note that this is the natural progression of the condition, and taking tablets or insulin as soon as they are required can result in fewer long-term complications. If you see any signs of diabetes or have any concerns you should talk to your doctor straight away. Mrs Sharon McCarthy and Mr Bryant Ruska, School Nurses

This wonderful function was organised and coordinated by Mrs Fiona King. On behalf of all the Year 12 students and staff who attended I extend my sincere gratitude to Fiona and every family who contributed to the function either with food, assistance or decorations. Year 12 2019 Information Night On Wednesday 25th July, a meeting will be held in Founders Hall for our Year 12 2019 students. A range of information regarding VCE will be presented. Information regarding the online student subject selection process will be presented as an introduction to subject selections for 2019. The evening will begin at 5.30 pm and we are planning to be finished by 7.00 pm. Presentation Ball We now have only four more training sessions before the Ball. The last two sessions will be held at Eastbank in the week before the Ball. On Monday (6th August) and Thursday (9 August), students will leave school by bus at 3.40pm and be taken to Eastbank for their dance sessions, beginning promptly at 4.00pm. Dance lesson times for these evenings are from 4.00pm – 7.00pm. Afternoon tea is an important part of these evenings and is held in the Hall Foyer prior to students travelling to Eastbank. It is proposed that half the students will bring food for each of these evenings and a group of parents will have this ready in Founders Hall Foyer by 3.20pm. Thank you to the parents who have offered to help set up the afternoon tea. Students who have surnames beginning with A – M please bring afternoon tea to share on Monday; students with surnames beginning with N-Z, please bring afternoon tea on Thursday. The parent/friend/guardian dance training will be held on Thursday the 9th August at 6.00pm, at Eastbank. It is not expected that students will be absent from regular classes on Friday 10th August, the day prior to the Presentation Ball. Students have been allocated time slots for their individual photographs for the night of the Presentation Ball, Saturday August 11th. After their photos students may stay at Eastbank or return home if convenient. All students need to be assembled at Eastbank for the group photograph by 6.00pm, after which they will assemble in readiness for their presentations. After the presentations, the main meal will be served. It is worth noting that this will be at around 8.45pm. While nibbles will be served prior to the main meal, it may be worth considering a small meal or filling afternoon tea prior to attendance. Ms Deidre Belleville, Year 11 Co-ordinator

Year 7 Long Tutorial Programme This week during our Monday long tutorial the students participated in a ‘Super Quiz’. It was ‘game on’ with Mrs Monk’s tute being the tute to beat after they took out the prize for the Term 1 full year level activity. Each tute was broken into 2 or 3 teams and according to a reliable source, Mr Sach’s tute were hungry for victory. The questions were based on general knowledge and stretched the minds of the Year 7 students (and tutors!). Questions included naming the longest river in Victoria, spelling Mr. Torriero’s surname and finding the whole number closest to the square root of 410. The results represent an average of the total points received for each tute group (after tallying the points scored for the 2-3 groups within each tute). Here are the final results: TUTOR SCORE Miss Semmens 11.2 Mrs Monk 11 Mr Plant 10.6 Mr Howells and Mrs Worsfold 10.5 Mr Sach 9.6 Mrs Roberts 9.5 Mrs Kerr 7.8 Mrs Davis and Mr Murphy 7.5 Miss Wood 7.5 Thank you to all students who took part and congratulations to Miss Semmens’ tute.
