Over four weeks, Grades 4, 5 & 6 students from Ss Michael and John's PS, Horsham West PS, Horsham PS, Holy Trinity Lutheran School and Year 7 students from Horsham College and St Brigid's College selected from ten workshops to further develop areas in which they are gifted, talented or highly interested. In 75 minute workshops, students were able to be extended and further expand their skills and interest areas. The workshops also offered students the opportunity to meet and work with students they might not otherwise have met as well as develop leadership and teamwork skills. Bright Sparks concluded on Wednesday afternoon with a celebration in the library with our Bright Sparks students and their families. Approximately 60 students and their families - mums, dads, grandparents and siblings attended and left our school very happy and appreciative. I would like to sincerely thank the staff who were involved in ensuring that this second instalment for 2019 of Bright Sparks was just as successful as the first. St Brigid’s College looks forward to offering this program again in 2020. Rachelle Ough Will Brennan

BRIGHT SPARKS 2.0

After a very successful first program for 2019 of Bright Sparks in Term 2, St Brigid's College ran a second instalment of Bright Sparks for Term 3.

SOCIAL

There was a great spirit, of many forms, evident at the Social held last Friday night. The way students entered into the “Bad Prom” theme and the interesting dancing and clothing styles were outstanding. Thanks to Annie Brack and the SRC for their organisation. There were some very, very original costumes!

WELCOME

Next week we welcome our new Year 7 students 2020 to St Brigid’s. On Tuesday students from our local Government primary schools and Holy Trinity Lutheran will be welcomed into our community and go through their paces in a range of different classes whilst the Ss Michael and John’s Grade 5 and 6 students will join us on Wednesday and Thursday. All our new students will experience an array of our resources and, at the same time, mix with more senior students and different staff members. This program assists with the smooth transition from primary to secondary.

OVERSEAS TRAVEL

I hope Japan is prepared for the arrival of our students and staff as they journey overseas during the next two weeks on the “STBC Japan Tour 2019”. We wish staff members Jeni Allen, Naomi Gash and Adam Clusker and our students, safe travel and wonderful experiences. I’m sure Facebook will be running hot during their time away.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS' READING CHALLENGE

Well done to everyone involved in this year's Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge. Literacy and numeracy skills lay the foundation for success in learning and in life, so this challenge is a practical and fun way for students to build these life skills.Students completed the challenge by reading 10 Premiers' Reading Challenge books and 5 books of their own choice. These students received a badge along with a certificate of participation. Many thanks to our library staff; Anne-Maree O'Beirne and Mark Rowe for organising a celebratory morning tea in the Library.

The Young Australians Best Book Awards (YABBA) was established in 1985 by a group of Victorians keen to see children engage in reading Australian books. It seeks to provide children a voice within the general Australian children’s book industry. The YABBA Awards encourages children to recommend recent Australian published books, read all the recommendations for their peers, rate them against all others and then finally reward that book they feel is best. Voting for shortlisted books ends 18th October.
