RU OK Day?

On Thursday, 10th September the school acknowledged R U OK? Day by running eventful activities - Graffiti Wall of positive messages, Circuit Boxing and Giveways, Dance Club Participation and Healthy Together handing out flyers to students.

A massive thank you to Mr Sinclair and our VCAL students for organising the Graffiti Board - this was by far the most popular. A huge thank you to Tania from COGG and the WAY Group for supporting and organising activities, Splashdown for the giveaways, Circuit Competition and Healthy Together for joining in.

Year 9 Girls Go Extreme Laser Tag Challenge

The Girls Go Extreme Group set off to North Geelong Laser Tag this week for some team building and serious commando challenges!

Girls were placed into two teams and had to complete different challenges that included Queen Tag where you had to keep a member of your team safe at all times whilst not getting ‘tagged’ yourself !

Once again it was sensational to watch the girls embrace the challenge and work together but most importantly enjoy themselves.

To ensure all members of the group can attend we are putting off our break up until next term.

Well done once again Girls ! Chiara Ercoli

Grade 5 Newcomb Secondary College Open Morning Breakfast

On Thursday, 10th September, Newcomb Secondary College with the generous support of Tania Dudas from the Youth Lynx Program and her WAY GROUP hosted a Grade 5 Open Morning. Students and their families were welcomed into the College for the morning and provided the opportunity to tour the school and ask questions about what Newcomb Secondary College has to offer.

Families then stayed on for coffee, hot chocolate and a hot breakfast and had the opportunity to mingle with staff and other potential Newcomb Secondary College students.

We were blessed with a beautiful morning and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet some students who may attend Newcomb Secondary College in 2017.

Just Think Forum

On Wednesday, 9th September a group of our Year 9 students attended Geelong Football Club to participate in the 'Just Think' forum. Barwon Child Youth Family and Geelong Football Club ran hands on activities engaging the students in discussions around 'just think' of your behaviour and others when considering using alcohol and drugs. "It was a good opportunity for us to learn about drugs and alcohol and how it is going to affect us in the long run as our brain is just developing" Kaitlyn & Olivia

"It was really interesting learning what a standard drink was as most places pour more than a standard amount" Molly

A Marathon Effort!

At a combined Year 11 and Year 12 Assembly on Thursday, 10th September, our senior students were given an opportunity to hear from Australian distance running legend, Steve Moneghetti. The students were given sage advice around the importance of goal setting, planning and discipline from the former Olympian. A point that resonated with many in the audience was when the Commonwealth Games gold medallist suggested the students should be constantly thinking about their goals, and should be regularly asking themselves, ‘what am I doing about this today?’ - advice for them to keep in mind as they approach their final, and most important term.

Year 11 VCAL Students

Year 11 VCAL students put their newly learned

barista skills to their first test this morning at the Grade 5 Open Morning. About 49 hot beverages were

provided throughout the morning.

Geelong Tertiary Futures Program

As the Semester Two group of Geelong Tertiary Futures Program students draws to a close some have reflected on their time during the program:

“I enjoy going to the Gordon to do the practical classes. I have been able to participate in tasters courses in electrical, painting and decorating, bricklaying and carpentry. I really enjoyed painting and decorating, plumbing was really hard work, and I found out electrical isn’t for me.”

“I enjoy it when we have practical classes at the Gordon as we get to learn about what we need to do for future jobs. We also learn about how much work you really need to do and what kind of skills are involved in the job. So far my favourite has been plumbing as we were able to participate in a large amount of hands on work.”

“I enjoy going to the Gordon because it gives me examples of different careers that are possible. It has helped me decide which career path that I want to choose. It is a great program and should continue for many years to come.”

“I have really enjoyed going to the Gordon this term. I have been able to get a lot of experience in auto mechanics, fitness and plumbing. I have enjoyed all of them, but plumbing was my favourite.”

V8 Supercars Last Friday, 11th September students made their way on the v8 Supercars excursion. Great weather and an awesome group of students went to see all things fast and loud. $5 for bus ride and a student on track ticket for free. Thanks to the enrichment programme for helping with the day and Mr Tagell for driving.

Mrs Tania Reed.

IN MY CLASSES

On Monday, 7th September a group of residents from Bupa aged care in Townsend Road came to Group 73’s art class. The students and visitors are working on a series of group artworks to be put on display at both the school and Bupa Aged Care. Thanks to staff of Bupa and Newcomb Secondary College for organising this opportunity.

IN MY CLASSES

This is Jayden of Year 10 in his Further Science class today testing the specific temperature of a piece of zinc.

Last week, a little bit of Irish crept into our PE department, with a red hot game of Gaelic football played by Group 71 under the watchful eye of Mr Peter Currie.

REMINDER TO PLEASE NAME ALL

ITEMS OF UNIFORM

Student Computers 2016 and Beyond

As you may be aware we are already in the planning stages for our 2016 school year. This means that a lot of work is being done on course planning and the associated booklist and resource needs. Over the past few years we have been making a big effort to reduce the costs to our families while still providing a quality and challenging education that leads on to successful pathways.

For the 2016 school year it will be expected that all students will Bring Your Own Computer Device (BYOD) for use at school as needed. In order for us to continue to reduce overall costs incurred through the annual booklist a number of measures have been put in place, however these rely on students having their own computer at school.

A number of booklisted text books will be available in digital eBook format at a cheaper cost than the printed version. These editions also come with access to online resources available on student computers.

A growing number of classes will be requiring students to enrol in online tutorials and courses. Many of these are free of charge to students and require a computer to access at school and at home. These may include – Maths Pathways, Language Perfect, Khan Academy, Studio Code.org. Google Education and Department of Education FUSE sites.

Xuno will continue to be used as a Learning Management System and a communication portal where student work is posted and may also be submitted online.

Students with their own computers have learning opportunities that are not otherwise available – up to date education software titles for all subject areas, access to cameras needed for photographs of work and class activities, easy saving and access of work for each class, ability to take work home for continued study, easy access to teacher messaging on Xuno as needed for class support and many more.

With the growing need for IT related skills in education and future workplaces we hope to work with all families to come up with the best way of providing student computers in 2016.

In order to support parents in providing a computer device there are two BYOD options.

Purchase a new computer through our JB Education Portal. These are a one off price with no more to pay.

Device 1 - Lenovo ThinkPad 11e Yoga Touch 11.6inch 4GB/128GB SSD/WIN81/1YR for $908.60 inc GST

Device 2 - LENOVO THINKPAD 11E 4GB/ 128GB SSD 1YR for $808.50 inc GST. Payment plans are available.

These computers include full education software package with Office 2013, virus protection and 50 educational titles as well as warranty and support for three years. Damage insurance is available.

Bring a device you already own and work with our IT support team to set this up for use on the College network. Limited support is available for these devices.
