Dear Parent,
Half term seems like a distant memory already, but it was fantastic to welcome back all of
our pupils and staff after a well-deserved break. Everyone seems to be fully recharged and
excited for the opportunities in the final three weeks of this term; indeed Year 7 went off
almost immediately on Thursday to La Maison Claremont in St Omer. Claremont pupils are a
talented bunch and we were delighted when 4J reminded us in assembly last Friday, of the
importance of performing arts in our lives.
This week there is so much happening that I scarcely know where to start! So many of our
children are involved in the Hastings Music Festival this year and many will be involved in
the individual singing and piano classes, as well as Brass Day which take place over the
course of the week. Music is such an integral part of school life at Claremont and I am
really looking forward to the Afternoon Tea Concert on Tuesday afternoon in the Chapel.
The school is lucky enough to have a second concert on Friday afternoon, when Pre-Prep
and Nursery pupils will be taking to the stage in their animal-themed Mothers’ Day
Concert.
All this would be busy indeed, but on Thursday the whole school will be celebrating their
favourite fictional character, by dressing up for World Book Day. With so many character
from which to choose, it is a tough challenge, but the Regency grace of Anne Elliot from
Jane Austen’s Persuasion would be my preferred personal choice. On Thursday, a group of
Year 7 and 8 pupils will be travelling to London to see ‘War Horse’ just before its West End
run concludes in March. On Friday, pupils from Years 3, 4 and 5 will get to grips with the
challenges and possibilities inherent in 3D printing. And of course all this when many of our
pupils are busily rehearsing for Claremont’s Got Talent.
Last Monday in assembly, we were lucky enough to hear from Mrs Smalldon (mother of
Henry Year 3, and Edward Year 4), who has been raising money for PACE, which is a charity
based in Buckinghamshire providing an "education for life" to children with very complex
disabilities including cerebral palsy and related physical and sensory impairments. We were
shown a very inspirational film of the children overcoming huge obstacles to achieve a
personal goal. Conquering her own fears, we then saw a film of Mrs Smalldon jumping out of
a plane and free-falling from 15,000 feet. PACE is a fantastic charity which does so much
important work with young people and as a school we are very pleased to support it.

My First Day at the National Children’s
Orchestra
On Sunday 21st February I went to
the National Children’s Orchestra
for my first rehearsal with the
London Region Junior Orchestra.
We played the Overture to Oliver,
three pieces from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and Farandole by Bizet.
They were the professional orchestral arrangements and hadn’t been
made easy for us! We are working towards a concert in November and
we will have 7 rehearsals each 3 hours long. We concentrated on
rhythm and sight reading and how an orchestra works, like tuning up
and watching the conductor. The conductor made us sing the rhythms
which was fun and different. There are over 100 children aged up to 11
years old in the London Region Orchestra playing most of the
orchestral instruments including violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp,
oboe, flute, piccolo, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and clarinet, which is
the instrument I play. I made lots of new friends who I will be playing
with in the Under 10s National Orchestra in August when I go away
for a week. It was an amazing experience and I can’t wait for the next
regional rehearsal in March.

Did a fabulous assembly on Performing Arts for us this morning. Well
done.
As the window closes on the BBC 500 Words, we usher
in more literary focus and festivity with next Thursday
(3rd) marking World Book Day 2016. In honour of this
we will be running a series of book themed
competitions, comprising of quizzes, literary treasure
hunts, puzzles, crosswords and design tasks. Daily
activities will run from Monday to Thursday, and pupils
will need to submit entries for all four days if they wish
to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
All relevant information (entry sheets, details of daily competitions, submission box etc) will be posted in the library, so pupils
will need to keep their eyes peeled!
It promises to be good fun and is intended to further demonstrate and celebrate the great pleasure and enjoyment that
books bring.
Congratulations to Arjun Kolani, Emma Patel,
Lauren Perry and Matthew Brand who all got a
special mention in assembly this morning.
Well done to all students who have entered to
participate in the Science Fair. The Science
teachers are excited to see all of the projects
and presentations in the 17 March.
7A enjoying their time in France ...
Looks like they were hungry!
With the deadline now passed, it is time to reflect on what has
been a wonderful collective effort resulting in so many of our
children entering 500 Words.
My head is still absolutely buzzing with ideas and reflections
having enjoyed such a vast array of stories. I have been truly
delighted with the enthusiasm that has been shown as well as the
effort, originality and imagination on show.
This is a fantastic nationwide competition, providing
equal opportunity and it has been a pleasure to see
pupils of all literary interest and ability take ownership
of and pride in their ideas. It is fair to say that the
spirit of creative writing is very much alive here at
Claremont.

Life is as ever very busy in the Music Department at Claremont. On Tuesday this week, the
Orchestra performed Handel's Hallelujah Chorus to the Nursery. They showed off their talent as
performers providing inspiration to the Nursery children who were in awe. Beaming smiles were
seen as the Nursery enjoyed meeting the older children and trying out the instruments for real.
Hopefully, this will encourage some of our youngest pupils to take up an instrument in the future.
Friday 26th February we had Hector Wright, Liberty BransbyMiles, Ru Handyside and Galina
Baxter all taking their ABRSM Music exams - we wish them lots of luck and hope their results

Trip to Asturias, Spain
During the February Half Term, sixteen Claremont students from Years 10, 11
and 12 went to Gijon, Asturias. We stayed with host families and took classes
at a Spanish Language School. We did lots of exciting things like visiting the
Town Hall and enjoying eating chocolate con churros, a local speciality. Out of
all our Spanish experiences, we enjoyed
the food the best!Anna Collins, Emily
Oaten and James Cross, Year 10
I had an amazing experience when I
went to Gijon, Asturias with my
Spanish class and other students at
school. I had a great time at the
Language School and my Spanish
speaking has improved greatly with
the help of our teacher Pablo. We
were only there for a short while,
however, our visits to the old town of
Gijon, the talk we had at the town hall and walks on the beach really
interested me in the culture of northern Spain.
The activities put on by the Language School – ‘Mundidiomas’ - were a great
way to use the Spanish we had learnt and put it into practice.
If I were to go back to Gijon, it would definitely be for longer as I felt I was
getting into the rhythm of speaking Spanish with the people there. I stayed
with a good family, and their house was only a small stroll away from the
Language School, which was very convenient. Tom McGee, Year 12
Claremont Senior’s Black Box Talent Evening Please don’t forget that our Black Box Talent evening, a talent showcase and charity fundraiser, is drawing closer and will be
held on the evening of Thursday, 10 March at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale from the School Office for £3.50 per person, with
the added incentive that all the money raised will go to the Pestalozzi International Village, our nominated charity of the year.
The Pestalozzi Village will be performing a cultural dance sequence on the night. The evening promises to be a fantastic
showcase of the talent here in the Senior School of the students - and staff!

The Jive Dancing Club perform at Pestalozzi Cultural Dance Evening
On Thursday, 11 February, Claremont Senior School's Jive Dancing club performed a crowd-pleasing American jive to the
sounds of 'Rock around the Clock' at the Pestalozzi Cultural Dance evening. Claremont and Battle Abbey School were both
invited to share the stage with Pestalozzi's international students, who performed traditional and modern dances and
songs from their home countries including Nepal, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, at a well-attended event to
raise money for the international village.
Representing the Jive Dancing club were Leo Levinson, Sophie Nye, Harrison Wells, Mr Gary Foster-Adams (instructor),
Alexandra McKenzie-Sanchez and Mrs Mimi McNally (instructor). Our hosts from Nepal made us feel very welcome and
introduced us to many of the Pestalozzi students taking part in the event. The Jive Dancing team will perform again at the
Black Box Talent evening organised by Year 12 Drama Students for Thursday, 10 March.

Inter House Competitions
The Friday afternoon before Half Term our students participated in our regular Inter House Competition between our four
Houses: Bodiam, Camber, Pevensey and Scotney. Our students got stuck into pursuits as typical as netball and as unexpected
as ‘Dead Lift Off’, competition and ‘RAP Battle’ all raising the competitive heat. At the end of the afternoon, Bodiam was at
the top of the Leader Board with 240 points. Congratulations particularly to all in Bodiam.
Match Reports Netball
U14 Match Report for Tuesday, 23 February
The U14s travelled to Cranbrook School this week for Netball. The match proved to be a very competitive and exciting contest. It is
certainly the best game I have seen the team play this season so far.
The score was close throughout the match; at the end of the first quarter it was 4-3 to Cranbrook, at half-time it was 6-5 to Cranbrook, at
the end of the third quarter it was level at 9-9, and in the last quarter Cranbrook just edged clear and won 13-10.
Claremont goal scorers were: Issy Barrington 4, Bella Giddins 4, Maisy Pearce 1, Poppy Payne 1.
Player of the Match (as voted by Cranbrook Team): Hollie Pooke (C)
Miss Taylor, Girls' Games Teacher
1sts Senior Netball v Moira House
Well done to the girls who played an extremely competitive match, with the score line so close at the end of each quarter. The game was very
fast and furious with both teams playing some great technical netball. In the final quarter, the girls played with 6 players due to injury and
held it together well to finish the match on a draw. Well done to Grace Clarke in centre, Issy Walsh for her constant hard work and to Lydia
Dunham in defence. It was a great result, final score: Claremont 12 - Moira 12.
2nds Senior Netball v Moira House
This was also a great match with the girls being able to play at positions they may not have the chance to play usually. We had a few pupils off
ill so needed to juggle the team around giving the chance for Amy Hilton and Sacha Melnikova to join the 2nds. The girls played some lovely
fluent netball, demonstrating great skill. Well done to the whole team.
Final score: Claremont 22 - Moira 14.
U15A Netball v Cranbrook – Tuesday, 23 Februay
The girls played a very tough match but worked hard until the very end, they showed excellent fighting spirit. The Cranbrook girls were
extremely tall and this proved tough for the Claremont girls. Emily Bewsher worked hard in the centre third as usual and Amelia Phipps
worked tirelessly in defence. There were some great plays throughout the whole match. Well done to all the girls, but unfortunately Cranbrook proved too strong for us.
Final Score: Claremont 10 - Cranbrook 32.
U15B Netball v Cranbrook – Tuesday, 23 February
As the match progressed the Claremont girls started to come together and to play well. Maria Mateo Taracido played well as
goal attack, Chloe Manning worked endlessly in defence and Poppy Pearce was a key player in the centre third. The girls are
really improving as a team, Well done.

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 Swimming Gala
Claremont v Ashford Prep
Year 3, 4, 5, & 6 swam on Monday evening against a very strong Ashford Prep school. We had
around 90 swimmers competing and over 40 races. Every one of our swimmers gave it their all
and worked very hard. Our Yr 3's who were swimming in only their second gala, had another
taste of what a swimming gala is all about. The Year 4's who have worked hard all year with their
swimming came up against one of their strongest year groups. However, with more practice we
can only improve. The Year 5's girls and boys swim teams, who have competed fantastically well
this year, again proved what a strong year group of swimmers we have. The Year 5 boys were at
it again winning both their relays as well as winning all the individuals! The Year 6 girls have made
incredible progress over the year. They were narrowly beaten in a couple of exciting races, but
they competed strongly once more. Finally the Year 6 boys who have had a very strong season to
date, were slightly stronger and they also won both their relays and all individuals bar one! Well
done to all our swimmers. Overall score - Claremont 219 - 274 Ashford Prep

U13A’s
The U13A's played a triangular tournament at Battle Abbey this week. Claremont won their first game against Battle Abbey A's and drew their
second match against Dulwich Prep A's. The first game was a little scrappy at times but we re-grouped in the second match and made effective
use of our set plays. Player of the match against Battle Abbey was Grace de Wilde (WA) and Player of the match against Dulwich Prep was
shared between Millie White (GA) and Tippi Willard (GD).
2nd VII
Vs Battle Abbey 2nds
A fast and frantic game which didn't see us playing to the best of our ability, sadly, and one where we didn't make the most of our opportunities
to score. Lost 3-1 POM Mary Woodfear (DPS vote)
Vs DPS U12B
Once again a bit of a rushed and scrappy game with lots of possession given away by both teams. Lost 2-0.
POM Mary Woodfear (DPS vote)
3rd VII
U11A
A very enjoyable and closely contested match. Despite both teams having good spells of possession, the first quarter ended 0-0. Claremont
were first to score, with a lovely goal from Eve Spencer, but Battle Abbey equalised just before half-time. The 3rd quarter remained goalless
but Battle Abbey took the lead on the final quarter and, despite some agonisingly close chances, Claremont were unable to equalise.

Game 1
Claremont 4 – 0 Battle Abbey
POM Battle Abbey vote – Cathryn Garner
POM Miss Compton vote - Amaya Gomez and Alice Cowlard
Super play from the 3rds team against Battle Abbey. Lovely link passes
were made down the court to our shooters, Alice Cowlard and Amaya
Gomez who scored some excellent goals. We marked our opponents well
and dominated the game. Well done girls. Miss Compton.
Game 2
Claremont 2 – 2 Dulwich Prep
POM Dulwich vote – Emily Manning
Miss Compton vote – Marysia Dickinson
This was a fairly even game however, we became slightly relaxed
and gave the ball away too easily. To improve, we must ensure we
make strong, direct passes. Miss Compton.
Girls
In2hockey U13 tournament
Lots of close matches which could have gone either way, with only one goal in it. Our only two larger losses were
against eventual 1st and 2nd placed teams. A really good effort from the team who haven't played
together since last term.
v Gildredge Hse A. Lost 1-0 v Burgess Hill Lost 1-0
v Gildredge Hse B. Won 1-0 v Bedes Lost 3-0
v Ardingly Lost 4-0 v Farlington Lost 2-1
v Battle Abbey. Drew 0-0
U9A v DPS A
Playing in their first full 7-a-side game the U9s adapted well to their new formation. Anna Irvine-Capel
cleared the ball well as a sweeper. Amelia Barrett worked hard to feed the midfield and Lizzie Simou and
Emma Patel showed some lovely personal skill (complimented by the DPS staff). Diya Binodh also showed
audacious skill lifting the ball over her opponent’s stick which was great to see. The game could have gone either way but a late DPS goal
clinched it for them late on. POM Lizzie Simou (Miss H choice)
U9B v DPS B
Highlights of the match were Bea Ackerley making a driving run into the D and shooting early. The ball was destined for the goal until a last
ditch clearance by DPS to deny us. A scrappy period of play by both teams led to a loose ball ending up in our goal sadly. Some 2nd half
pressure from Lizzie Simou and Bea Ackerley looked promising but a crowded D prevented the ball crossing the line. POM Bea Ackerley (Miss
H choice)
U8 Hockey v Dulwich Prep
The U8's had an away match against Dulwich Prep this week. They played well from the first whistle and looked far more confident on the
ball. Charlotte Turley scored the opener with a determined dribble into the D. Darci Bailey then added two more, showing some good skill in
the build up to make the final score 1-3 to Claremont. Players of the match this week were Darci Bailey ( chosen by Dulwich ) and Tabitha
Lowe ( chosen by Miss Hurst & Miss Lovell ).
Boys
Claremont 3rds, 4ths, & 5ths v Marlborough House
3rds 2 - 1 Marlborough House
The 3rd team played a fantastic game of Hockey. They played with great intensity and started the game very positively. We counter attacked
well and the movement of the ball was direct and accurate. At every opportunity we looked to get the ball into the oppositions 'D'. Toby
Coomber and Will Beard were the scorers and took their goals well. Special mention to Ru Handyside who made 2 or 3 excellent stops in goal.
Man of the Match - Ale Nard for his excellent stick skills.
4ths 1 - 1 Marlborough House
Again the 4ths played some excellent Hockey and moved the ball around well and kept possession for long spells. However, we went 1-0 down
against the run of play. After this it was wave after wave of Claremont attacks but we just couldn't manage to score. In the last 5 minutes
Hong Chen, with a vertical stick, managed to get the all important goal after some excellent work down the right by the tireless running of
Daniel Morris. Man of the Match - Archie Wright for his defensive positioning and important tackles.
5ths 1 - 0 Marlborough House
A similar story in the game with Claremont having a lot of possession and they could well have had more goals but with a little composure in
front of goal next time. This will come. The goal came from Charlie Saunders who managed to get past a couple of tackles before pushing the
ball through the advancing keeper’s legs! Harry Manning had a good game out on the left. Man of the Match - Daniel Morris for his all-round
skill level and positive approach play. U9 A+B v St Ronan’s A, B, C & D
U9 A+B v St Ronan’s A, B, C & D
Claremont A 3 - 3 St Ronan’s A
Our A's played a very exciting game against St Ronan's A's. In the first half St Ronan’s took a 2-0 lead but in the second half Claremont
fought back to 2-2 with goals from Charlie Willard and Antonio Ghattas. St Ronan’s then scored another to set up an tense finish but Arjun
Kolani showed some good sticks skills to then get his shot away and score via the post.
Claremont A 6 - 1 St Ronan’s B
Our A's then played St Ronan’s B's and the boys played some very quick attacking Hockey. We scored some excellent goals through Javier
Gomez (3), Arjun Kolani, Charlie Willard and Louis Lewis. Man of the Match over the two matches was Arjun Kolani.
Claremont B 2 -0 St Ronan’s C
Our B's also had a very good afternoon and played some very good Hockey. They managed to score through Finlay Gibbon-Brooks and a
fortunate own goal.
Claremont B 4 - 0 St Ronan’s D
In the final game, the boys once again played well and took their chances when the opportunity came. Oscar Rushant scored the goals in this
game. Man of the Match over the two games was Charles Crawford.

We are pleased to announce that
the following four pupils were
made Prefects this morning:
Oliver Hill, Millie Park, Oscar
Murray and Ella Stockdale.
They read the Prefect Promise
brilliantly:
I am proud to be asked to be a
Prefect of Claremont School.
I look forward to undertaking
the duties given to me with a
happy heart and will do them to the best of my ability.
I will look forward to helping the younger students of the school or any
pupil having problems.
I promise to be an excellent ambassador for the school at all times.
Well done to all the pupils who received a certificate for their AtL grades this
morning. You should be very proud.
We started the week by creating our own Foxes class number line. Jenn took
photos of the children involved alongside their numeral and the matching
quantity of objects they’d gathered. These photos have been laminated and put
up on the wall to provide a visual prompt for us, if needed, when we’re thinking
about numbers.
We did a fascinating experiment floating puddles of food dye in a big
shallow dish of milk. We then dabbled cotton buds soaked in diluted washing
up liquid into the food colour. Almost instantly the colouring dashed away
from the cotton bud and bright white milk reappeared. We discussed why
this might be happening and came up with some highly creative ideas.
The highlight on Tuesday was being invited to hear the Prep School
Orchestra rehearsing Handels’ Hallelujah chorus. Mrs Harris-Prior
explained a bit about the instruments and then the musicians helped us to
try some of them out. We are so grateful to all who helped make this such
an exciting opportunity. Following on from this experience we returned to
Foxes and used our percussion instruments to play along to a Nursery
Rhyme CD.
Wednesday Forest School was just wonderful - sunny and frosty. We made crepe paper “wind feelers” which
rapidly became “dew trail makers”. We then pressed the soggy paper onto an old white cotton sheet and
rolled it up tight. The dye seeped from the wet paper and made intriguing patterns.
In the afternoon we worked as a team to make a four colour rainbow-in-a- jar. The blue colourant went in a
strong sugar solution at the bottom of the jar. Green was in a weaker sugar solution and this was carefully
poured down the side of the jar so it sat on top of the blue. Yellow and then red followed in increasingly
dilute sugar syrup mixes. The end result was amazing and very beautiful.
The first week back is always very interesting and this week
was no exception, with getting back into the swing of things and
back to the fun of Badgers!
This week we have been focusing on properties of shapes, most
importantly investigating the sides of shapes; and we have
introduced 3D shapes into our Maths area. We have also
explored numbers beyond 5, looking at recognising numbers 5-10.
In terms of phonics this week, we have been looking at the letters 'd’ and ‘c' and
also touching upon the letter ‘m’. We have thoroughly
enjoyed this; learning the actions to go with the letter
and also watching our favourite animal, Geraldine the
Giraffe help us. We were also introduced to a new
friend, 'Bill the Badger!' who is also helping us
with our phonics.
We visited the Prep School orchestra and listened
to them perform the song Hallelujah chorus which
was beautifully played. After this, we had the
chance to explore the instruments ourselves.
Thank you to the School orchestra and Mrs
Harris-Prior for this; much fun was had by all!
Lastly, we have been outside exploring the forest; creating the letter
't' from sticks, reinforcing our phonics knowledge and also playing on
the computers, gaining more knowledge of phonics and Maths, whilst exploring colours on mark
making programmes.
The Squirrels have welcomed Tiri, Miles Ollie and Lyla this
week and made them feel very welcome.
It has been a very busy week as Squirrels have been making
mini beasts, mosquitoes and ladybirds. Squirrels have also
been practising songs with Badgers and Foxes for the
Mothers’ Day concert next week. Squirrels have been impeccably behaved and attentive
in the Chapel.
Squirrels have also really enjoyed decorating suncatcher cards for their mummies.
The Ducklings and Butterflies
have been enjoying the lovely
weather this week; cooking in
the sensory kitchen outside in
the garden, building large
towers out of the soft shapes
and going for a walk down to
the peace garden.
Both rooms have also joined up for water play which
was definitely a favourite, along with music time,
where we sang nursery rhymes and did the actions.
Please can we ask Duckling parents to bring in spare
clothes that your child can wear out into the garden
and that you don't mind getting dirty?
This week, we
have welcomed
Elsie and
Bendeguz into the
Hedgehogs
classroom. We
have all been
doing lots of mark making and paintings,
and have changed our role-play area into a
cosy room, with lots of dollies
and blankets, so we can practise sharing
and caring.
This week we have
been for a walk in
the grounds looking
at the frosty
flowers and playing
on the grass. We have also worked
together to create a group picture
with our best drawings.
