Term 4, Week 8 November 29, 2019 Auto or Manual Principal's Editorial I was wrong. Many years ago, I lived for a time in the USA and while I have family over there I didn’t really know a great deal about some of the more subtle cultural differences. Now we share quite a few things in common with our American friends: language – mostly, McDonalds and KFC – regrettably, welcoming people from all parts of the globe – rightfully, as well as having a ‘can do’ attitude – for the most part. However there are a few things where we differ and one of the more obvious is that we drive on the left side of the road and they drive on the right. Anyway, I recall having a conversation with one of my good American friends about driving and using what they call a ‘stick-shift’ or what we call a car with a manual gearbox. In the US it is estimated that perhaps less than 5% of vehicles are manual cars while here in Australia in the past we were a nation that liked the manual gearbox. I was certain that Australians would never want to give up their ‘control’ over the vehicle. My grandma drove an automatic and no self-respecting Aussie would admit to driving an automatic – it was almost like saying that you couldn’t drive properly! Years ago, it was common to hear the expressions ‘three on the tree’ (column shift) or ‘four on the floor’ to describe a gearbox, today we rarely hear that talk in Australia. No longer can you ‘grind ‘em till ya find em’ because it’s all smooth five, six, seven or even eight speed automatics that reign supreme. Today they estimate that in Australia around 70% of the new car market is automatic – despite the fact that they cost more and can be less fuel-efficient. And these days most of the time I too drive an automatic – just like my Grandma did! The lesson that I’ve learned is that it can be quite difficult to predict the future and now I’m a little more cautious when suggesting what might happen. When we look into the future, nobody has the ability to be right all the time. There is one exception - Jesus – and He made some rather outrageous claims. “This gospel will be preached in all the world” (Mt 24:14) - How did he know?! Suppose Lenin, Marx or Napoleon had said that? We would laugh at the notion – but Jesus got it right. He also said things that no human being could say - “Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away” (Mt 24, Mk 13, Luke 21). Many have tried to silence His words, ban the Bible and stop people from reading it, but His words endure in spite of the opposition. Yes – I was wrong. However, Jesus’ comments on a whole range of topics far more significant than gearboxes have travelled across the centuries with a laser-like precision. Never wrong and spectacularly accurate. It’s worth a thought. Auto or Manual Principal's EditorialI was wrong.

Nurturing Young MindsUnderstanding and Managing Anger and Aggression

Anger and aggression-related problems are prevalent among young people in Australia, with one in five having trouble controlling their anger. These problems can often be symptomatic of underlying mental health issues including depression and anxiety. All young people face the risk of mishandling angry emotions and behaviours. It can take on many different forms- physical, verbal and emotional – and it has ramifications for the person involved and those close to them. It is important to note that aggression is often linked to frustration as well as anger.

How can parents support young people to understand and cope with their own feelings of anger and reduce the display of aggression?• Help them understand unhealthy releases of anger – clenching of the jaw or fist;

pacing, sweating or physically shaking, impulsive decisions or behaviours (swearing, accusing, threats, lashing out), feeling guilt or shame.

• Normalise anger as a valid emotion – be comfortable talking about emotions.• Help young people understand their triggers (trigger event, negative internal thoughts,

intense negative feelings, physiological response, external response).• Role model positive anger management- reflect on how you display anger.• When choosing the behaviour, you choose the consequence.• Introduce the eight second rule – 8 seconds of breathing time before acting on any

behaviours.• Clarify the difference between aggressive (harsh in words and tone, intimidating etc.),

passive (talks very little, always agrees with someone even if inside they disagree) and assertive (will voice opinion in a respectful and mature manner) communication.

• Agree on approved ways to express angry feelings.• Support them to achieve a routine sleeping pattern.• Encourage physical activity.• Agree on a trusted relative or family friend your child can call when feeling angry or

upset.

Road to Bethlehem What are your family traditions at Christmas time?

Does the story of a baby born in a manger hold any relevance for today? This story, so easily sentimentalised, remains the dramatic action of a God who refused to remain aloof from human misery, but rather became part of it. This story brings hope to our messy and complicated lives, and gives value to every human being regardless of status, rank, power or capacity.

We sing, “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight” in the Christmas carol, and Road to Bethlehem tells the story that brings this hope and quietens our fears. Why not establish a new family tradition this year – come to Road to Bethlehem and begin Christmas focused on what the season is really about.

An experience to share

Share Smiles, Laughter, and Joy, Bring your family, friends and colleagues to experience an outdoor walk-through the theatrical presentation that brings to life the true story and meaning of Christmas.

Secondary News

SSV State Girls Table TennisCongratulations to Year 7 girls Table Tennis team consisting of Gemma, Martina, Yutika, Aresca, Ashca and Taylah, who played at MSAC on Wednesday at the State SSV Table tennis championships. The girls played the three rounds of their pool superbly, and it came down to a nail biting count of points in the last round to determine the 2 teams that would progress to the semifinals. After the points were counted 3 times, it was determined Gilson was down by 2 points out of 30 games. A huge achievement by this group of girls who have given up their lunch times to train, and have learnt so much over the last semester.

Golf ExcursionLast week our Year 10 students ventured into Albert Park Golf Driving Range to spend time honing their golf skills. After some time practising their short game technique at school it was time to test their ability the vast open space that a Golf Range provides. The students had a great time trying different clubs and competing with and amongst themselves as they sought to improve their skills. The Year 10s were joined by a number of the Year 7 students who had just finished up playing in the State Table Tennis Competition next door at MSAC.
