Residents seek to modify Henry County GA Ordinance

Larry & June Stanley, Stockbridge GA, seek achange to the UnifiedLand Development Code (ULDC) in regard to keeping fowl inunincorporated Henry County. Currently the restriction requires aminimum of three acres and RA zoning.

Update: I have spoken with Chairman Smith and CommissionersMoss, Barham, and Bowman. Each has expressed their approval for thproposal given that specific qualifications are specified within the newordinance. Commissioner Preston has not yet responded to mycommunications.

Some commissioners were not aware that county code already allows pand goats as personal pets. Raising fowl for personal, non-commercial

use seemed reasonable to those I spoke with.

Proposed for inclusion in a ULDC modification:

Modification to maintain compliance with Sec. 3-16-1: Nuisance, Sec. 3-4-1: Health and safety of personand animals, and other applicable code sections.

    1. That restriction to RA zoning districts and the requirement for three acres are removed from theordinance. In their place, specific qualifications and restrictions are inserted to control but notprohibit keeping and raising specified livestock within all areas of unincorporated Henry County.

    2. With regard to fowl, qualifications and requirements shall include:2a. Allow fowl to be kept and raised

2b. Limit to no more than six (6) fowl in a residential area providing a lot area less than three acr

2c. Coop is required for housing fowl. Coop must be 25 inches from ground and 5 feet from anydwelling, feed in rat-proof container. Coop must provide four (4) square feet per bird. Birds maynot run at large; area must be fenced or otherwise enclosed by natural (wood, stone, shrubbery)landscape barrier to prohibit passage by birds.

2d. Coop may not be placed in a front yard in a residential area providing a lot area less than threacres. Protection of street-side appearance and curb appeal shall require that coop is protectedfrom street view or lot must provide privacy fencing or natural (wood, stone, shrubbery) landscap

    barrier.

We hope you will join us in this endeavor. Please contact June at [email protected].

Learn how to become a beekeeper

Many of the greatest beekeepers were handed this fascinating hobby or business down like a famheirloom, passed from generation to generation. What other insect do you know of that has had its product (honey) mentioned for a total of57 times in the Holy Bible, New King James Version? Do yknow of any other hobby that the whole family could be involved in, learn from and share the marewards? If you are interested in starting your own generational beekeeping heirloom, then opportunity is available on Saturday, February 16, 2013 when the Henry County Beekeepers Short Cou

(Basic Beekeeping) is being offered. The price for this opportunity is a mere $25.00 for adults (childrenyears old or younger can attend free with a paying adult). The course will be held at the Public SafBuilding Meeting Room, 116 Zack Hinton Parkway South, McDonough, Georgia. For more couinformation or application please go to WWW .HENRYCOUNTYBEEKEEPERS.ORG (Click on EducatioOpportunities) or call Tom Bonnell at 770-473-5434.

I am able to publicly announce that Georgia has a GREAT candidate for USSenate in my friend, Congressman Paul Broun. Please enthusiastically throw yo

support and money behind this champion of the Constitution from Georgia!

For Georgia First , Ray Mcberry

Broun Announces Candidacy for United States Senate:Says he'll be Georgia's voice in Senate against irresponsible spending

(Atlanta, GA) U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today released the following remarks afterholding a rally in Atlanta to announce his candidacy for the United States Senate in 2014:

"I went to Congress to stand against out-of-controlspending in Washington DC. Though it has often been lonely fight, it is a necessary one.

"We must have someone to lead the fight to stop thismadness, and restore fiscal restraint to our nation'scapital. Georgia needs a Senator who will take a stand stop the irresponsible spending. I'll be that leader!

"When I was sworn into the Marine Corps, and then again into the House of Representatives, I swore todefend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Out-of-control spending hasbecome our nation's enemy.

"I'll be the only candidate in this race whose first priority is to stop the runaway spending in WashingtonD.C. I've sponsored more legislation to reduce spending than any other Member of Congress from thisstate.

"Georgians aren't interested in labels or affiliation, they're interested in solutions. And that begins by

making Washington smaller and America bigger! That's the reason I'm running for U.S. Senate.

"I'm Paul Broun. I'm ready to lead that fight against out-of-control spending. With your help, and by God'sgrace, this is a campaign we're going to win."

    Who Is Paul Broun?

I'm not running for office to simply occupy a chair, to go-along-to-get-along, or to stroke my ego. Ibelieve to save this nation for our children and grandchildren; we must balance the budget and slash

    wasteful spending.

I will never sacrifice my principles for the sake of "political expedience" to make President Obama happy

...Nor will I ever bow down and kiss the ring of leaders like liberal Democrat Harry Reid to win favor in thSenate.

I am my own man. Alw ays have been. Always w ill be!

I've made it my mission in Congress to fight out of control government spending at every opportunity. Inever have voted to raise the debt limit - and I never will. I have intr oduced more legislation t o cuw asteful government spending than any other m ember of Congress from Georgia and w ill

cont inue to do so as a U.S. Senator !

My voting record is, and has always been, among the most conservative Members of Congress and I amoften singled out as being the most conservative on various scorecards.

When I first ran for Congress, I promised to cast my vote based on a simple four way test:

    1. Is it Constitutional?2. Do we need it?3. Can we afford it?4. Is it the right thing to do?

As you can see by this test, I tend to vote NO most of the time!!

Truth be told, except for foreign policy, Ron Paul's voting record and mine are virtually identical and I weit as a badge of honor when I'm accused of being a strict constitutionalist who doesn't bend or break whit's tempting to do so.

When I was fresh out of school I chose to don the uniform of our country and served in the United StateMarine Corps.

Being a Marine made me t he man I am today .

In Congress last session I was honored to enjoy a close friendship with TEA Party favorite Lt. Colonel AllWest from Florida. On the Senate side, I'm a staunch ally of now retired Senator Jim DeMint of SouthCarolina -- and of course, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

I am a constitutional conservative FIRST -- and yes -- I proudly belong to the limited-government wing othe Republican Party.

In fact, just a few months ago, I went to the House floor to deliver a speech on the U.S. Constitution anthe original intent of our Founding Fathers. I did that because I believe as a Member of Congress, theoath we took when we were sworn in meant something. The words "support and defend" the UnitedStates Constitution means the same thing to me today as it did as a United States Marine.

I repeatedly appear in the press for speaking out, standing up, and calling attention to his anti-free markpolicies.

I need to know I have your support. THE QUICKEST WAY TO SUPPORT MY CAMPAIGN IS BY MAKING AN ONLINECONTRIBUTION.

I promise you this much, as a Member of t he U.S. Senate I w ill continue t o defend theConst it ut ion fr om all enemies, foreign and domest ic, as I have done all my life.

So, my friend, I must ask you a favor that matters to America's future...

... WI LL YOU PLEASE STAND WI TH ME TODAY AND JOI N ME I N MYU.S.SENATE RACE?

    Stockbridges Rogue City Government

    By A l f red Br i t t

The City officials of Stockbridge, Georgia have again demonstrated their lack of leadership skills time andtime again. First, the City Council forced out the Mayor that the citizens voted into office. This Mayor watrying to cleanup 30+ years of corruption and back scratching that had been going on and had leftStockbridge stale in growth. As this was done the Council needed to fill a vacant seat on the Council sothey again went against the citizens and appointed a past Council member that had been voted out ofoffice by the people of Stockbridge. Then the City brought in a City Administrator that dont have thequalifications to hold the job and he has a past in politics that is questionable as far as ethics goes andconflict of interest. Now to the latest malfunction of the City Government. They have hired the past HenCounty BOC Chairman as the Economic Development officer. Again this person was fired by the people o

Henry County because of flagrant uncontrolled spending sprees with the citizens tax money, that has puthe County in the red ink and forced layoffs and cutbacks all over the County. The person they hired is anot qualified for the job they were hired for, they only have a GED.

It has been reported that most of the City Council has been carrying firearms in the meeting and somehave been buying large stockpiles of arms and ammo, why? What are they afraid of that they can justifyall of that expense? If they are afraid of the citizens they should know that the police will and do providesecurity during the meetings. So that leaves the County, State and Federal Governments they must beafraid of. So just what are they doing that we dont know about that they think the bigger Governments

will come after them about? I think it is time that the people of Stockbridge ask for an investigation intothis new rogue City Government that is running uncontrolled in the County. After all it is the peoplesmoney that they are playing with and it is the future of Stockbridge that is at stake.

The people may want to think about this as an option if you cannot get the rogue Government that is ouof control you may need to see what can be done about having the City charter dissolved and let theCounty take over and just not have a Stockbridge Georgia anymore, Because the people in the rest of thState are laughing their heads off at you all the time.

    Stockbridge History Going Away

    by Dr .Michael Moon

On February 1, 2013, the City of Stockbridge tore down the old florist which was the center of so muchcontention about eminent domain. The building was nothing much to look at but it was the last vestige Stockbridges past that was on that corner. The building was built between 1916 and 1920. It wasoriginally built as a home. Then many years later it was the site of Stockbridge Florist which was begunMrs. Syble Hurd the wife of the late Mr. Lewis Hurd who was the local Surveyor. Mrs. Hurd sold the

business after having it for a long time to Regina Spear in about 1983. She would marry Mark Meeks inaround 1986. I remember getting the corsage for my date to the Junior-Senior Prom in 1978 from Mrs.Hurd. There was another house just in the corner where the new city hall is today that once housedStockbridge Auto Parts.

Then the house next to it was the health department for a while.

Across on the other side was the Turner-Walden House (the old two story house behind where thefountain is today) which is still registered on the National Historic Registry. Then on the corner was Mr.Gilberts Garage. Behind it was a house that was once the carriage house for the old Turner-Waldenhome. Then was the large two story home that was the John Grant place. This home had a beautifulmural on a wall upstairs. My brother-n-law once lived in the home. Then it had Rainer-Carmichael FuneHome in it and they took care of my Daddy when he passed away in 1997. Kathys Flowers has been inthe little house for a long time. Then across the road from her was the Dr. Richard Hightower home whwas burned by the city and fire department recently. This home was a hospital and was used for suchduring the Civil War.

Back on North Henry Blvd on the same side the Elementary School is on there was Louises Lunch Box aher home for years. On the corner of Lee Street where the older city hall is located and is now home fothe police this land was lowered a good bit. There were a few homes along this area and one family whlived in one was the Lyle Family. Across the road from them was the nice old house on the hill that was

Mr. Mosshome who had Stockbridge Paving Company.

Where the bridge is today on the east side of the track was once a car wash that belonged to T.P. Stewaof McDonough. The Food Depot was Cochrans Grocery and the restaurant where Phils is was the MetroRestaurant. Across the road was the Hardware store owned by the late Mr. Larry Cochran and the DrugStore owned by Dr. Jimmy Clark. And not to forget in the corner of the parking lot of the grocery store where the bus stopped. Mr. Cochrans house once stood where the car wash is behind Phils Restaurant(Phil Hogan just recently passed away, he was a really nice man and we will miss him.)

The Presbyterian Church on the Corner of Burke Street has undergone many changes over the years. Told house that once stood next to the church belonged to the Ward Family and was the first telephoneexchange for the area. Further up the old First State Bank building once looked like a brick home. Behiit was a small family cemetery which was moved years ago and there was Mays Football Field back wherthe building sits where the City just purchased it for the youth and seniors.

The Methodist Church is new because the old church caught fire. Just up from it was the Real to ReelRecording Studio that belonged to Bill Turpin. This is where the singing group Collective Soul got starteThe building next to it was once the Phillips 66 Service Station. Across the road were three very nice old

homes. One has been restored for offices, one is in the woods and the other is gone.

On up the road on the left, is where Millys Diner was located. Then the small shopping area on the leftwhere the liquor store is today once was home to Moseley Furniture. Down underneath this building iswhere Southside Tire Co. go its beginning and was owned by Rudy Kelley. On the right corner we hadCouncilman Harold Cochrans Service Station and on the other corner was the late Mr. Leon WilsonsService Station. Then just past this point was the city limits. This was constructed of masonry and lookvery nice.

Going back to the east side of the tracks down behind where city hall is today was Alls Appliances, theHuddle House and the Library has been turned into the Municipal Court. The new library is over on BurkStreet. (There were a number of older homes torn down for the library and the tax/tag office.) TheBaptist Church has changed over the years. Then on further east was the Tastee Freeze on the left. Onthe right, where Eds Pawn and Moyes Pharmacy is located was Cowthrans Mobile Home Park and on thvery corner of Rock Quarry Road and Hwy 42 was Lanes Store which was moved to Heritage Park. Nexto it was Bills Bait Shop. Where the City Cemetery is located it was once the home of the Coker Familyand the property was given for the cemetery. Across from the cemetery was the business owned by thelate Tip Phillips and Mama Jean Quaterbaum had a restaurant there. My Mother-n-law worked for her.Back toward Lanes place is Connie Georges Rodeo Casino Western Wear Shop that has been there foryears. My wife was Miss Connies baby sitter. Then up the road was the other entrance to the city. Atthat point was the old skating rink.

Not much of the old historical part of Stockbridge remains because of either expansion or modernizationFor example: down Hwy 42 south of Hwy 138 about mile on the right once stood the William TuggleHome which was a nice two story home built in the late 1820s. The property was annexed and the houtorn down and a car wash took its place. Yes, the family names of Bond, Ward, Hightower, Walden,Grant, Tuggle, Morris, Milam, Lee, King, McCullough, Collier, Cochran, Clark, Love, Broder, and Hambrickare but a few to mention. Yes, History does abound in the names of these people such as Martin LutherKing, Sr. was born in Stockbridge. He was born as Michael King but he later changed his and his sonsname when they lived in Atlanta. Carrie Mae Hambrick had the Green Front Caf for a long time. Dr.Richard Hightower would help to bring much aid to people and much more. Chief Collier would possiblyhear the gunshots that killed Marvin King and Melanie Ann Hartsfield.

I know times change and people along with those times, but lets not let our history continue go under tblade. There is no Train Depot anymore because of the argument between the city and the railroad abothe bridge. We have many people here today from many different areas of the country and the world. They dont understand the feelings we have for our homes and heritage. The feelings I speak of cannotbe put into words because it is born into you. A pride of being a Southern born American is something none except those who are born Southern can understand. Thank you for reading.

Your legislators need to hear from you, and the window of opportunity for building grass-ro

support for HB 153 is short. Please call and write them today, and tell them to vote YES on H

    153. The name, address and phone number of your state representative and senator can be

found by logging ontowww.house.ga.gov and link to: Write your lawmaker. For this bill to pass, we will have to overcome entrenched spending interests, so a broad-base

organization that is interested in supporting this sensible reform, please forward this alert tyour contacts and lists.
