CHAIR’S REPORT

Sunday, September 11, aboard MS Oosterdam, making a leisurely nine knots enroute from Palma de Mallorca (Spain) to Toulon (France). We have fine conditions—a clear sky, light wind, no swell and 31deg C. This is a closing stage of a European trip that was delayed for a few years by the earthquakes and the aftermath. We have spent time in France, first in Paris and then near Brest in Brittany with our daughter and first grandchild. Our son-in-law is on contract with the French Groupama America’s Cup yacht syndicate. We moved on to England to visit my wife's friends near Oxford, and then to Liverpool for her nephew’s wedding. The makeover of Liverpool from when I first visited it in the mid-1970s is extraordinary and it is well worth a visit. It is 15 years to the day since the 9/11 attacks in the USA changed the world. From the NZ media, the security situation in Europe sounded dire, but we have not encountered anything untoward. The only indication has been in French towns where we have occasionally encountered squads of armed soldiers on foot patrol. In contrast to New Zealand, the weather has been consistently settled and fine, and we have encountered light rain only twice. It was very warm in Cadiz and Gibraltar, where a walk halfway up the rock left me well-exercised. As email on board ship (via satellite phone) is very expensive, we have relied on intermittent wifi connections ashore. No doubt the club has continued through the contributions of its many willing members. I am now looking forward to returning to Christchurch on September 24 and reconnecting with club members. Alistair McKerchar

WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR PACK FOR A

BACKPACKING TRIP?

Exactly what to put in your pack for a multi-day trip can prove to be something of a dilemma for both the novice and experienced backpacker alike. There will be a morning session on Saturday, October 15 at Knox Church Hall. A few experienced members of the club will bring along their packs, all packed for the following trips and show you what works for them.

A multi-day trip, staying only in huts. A multi-day trip, camping. Winter/summer differences will also be

discussed. Much is made of light weight tramping, which we full endorse, but it’s important to ensure the right gear is taken, without compromising safety.
