Principal’s Pen Vision Last newsletter, I made reference to the plans to College has to transition from a single campus school, to a three campus establishment. It’s an extremely exciting time in the history of Cornerstone, and a journey I want every member of our community to feel a part of, and to join with. Whilst the Application for Advance Determination still sits with the Department of Education Services, and we need their approval to proceed (as well as Ministerial Approval), we do have parts of the process that we can actively pursue whilst we wait. We continue to meet with the Architects, and staff are spending time outlining their needs for the future. We also are in the final stages of negotiating on a parcel of land in Vasse. Lord willing, our plan is to open a new campus in Dunsborough by 2016, which will initially be a Pre K to Year 2 College, and each year, extend out until we have a Pre K to Year 6 school by 2020. Further to this, our current Secondary students will be relocated to a brand new facility out at Vasse, and our current campus revert to being Primary school only. The Early Learning Centre would join us on this side of Grace Court with this change. The project is incredibly exciting. The financial aspects are very costly. The changes are profound – but the demand for the education your children receive with us here is beyond our ability to supply given the limited space we currently have. The College Board has spoken of the project as being ‘A generation….a region….. transformed’. That’s at the heart of this vision for change, and it’s a journey we very much look forward to sharing with you. this issue Parent Information Night Winter Uniform NAPLAN PO Box 775 Grace Court Busselton WA 6280 p: (08) 9754 1144 f: (08) 9754 1142 e: [email protected] w: www.cornerstone.wa.edu.au www.cornerstone.wa.edu.au DATES to REMEMBER May 5 Year 9 Sydney Camberra Information Night. 7-8pm May 7 Parent information night regarding Student Management changes May 7-9 Outdoor Education Expedition Stage 2 May 12-16 Package Free Food Week May 13-15 NAPLAN May 22 Primary Parent Assembly Year 3/4 May 26 Book Fair commences Year 9 & 10 Information Night for Years 11 & 12 TBC June 3-6 Exams Year 9 & 10 June 3-10 Exams Year 11 & 12 June 5 Primary Parent Assembly Year 3 June 9-20 In term Swimming Lessons Year 1-6 June 23 Secondary Showcase 9:45am Church Auditorium Term 2 Dates Tuesday 29 April - Friday 4 July Bruce 6 ISSUE 1st May 2014 NEWSLETTER A Ministry of Cornerstone Church of Christ Inc www.cornerstonebusselton.com CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

Around the College

Cleaver’s ClangersThose who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end. When she saw her first strands of grey hair, she thought she’d dye.

Welcome BackWe are delighted to be back for a new term, and trust that our families have enjoyed the break. Staff have prepared well for the return of students, and we look forward to a new term of working hard and seeing great learning and growth unfold.

Winter UniformWith a new term, comes the change of uniform. All students should now be wearing their winter uniform, which includes ties, and a change of dress for the girls. Hats are encouraged but nor required until Term 4.The uniform shop is completely stocked up on all school clothing items, so please ensure that your children are correctly fitted out as per the Parent Handbook. The tough lines taken on uniform infringements will be maintained in the coming term.

Welcome Vicki AndersonWith Cindy Midgely expecting another little bundle of joy, she will be taking Maternity Leave for the remainder of the year.In her place, we are delighted to welcome Miss Vicki Anderson to the teaching team. Vicki’s delightful nature will be such a blessing to the College and we look forward to her being part of the special community we have here.

First Aid Training UndertakenAs part of ensuring that we provide a safe environment for your children at the College, the pupil free day at the commencement of this week saw 15 of our staff complete their Senior First Aid training. Each year a significant number

of staff are provided with the training needed to enable us to appropriately deal with any medical emergencies.

Kiss N Drop ZoneIt may be time to provide a refresher on the way the Kiss-n-Drop zone works. Please ensure that you do not park in this area, and be aware that the driver is not to exit the vehicle at any time. If you need to exit the vehicle, please park elsewhere and leave the Kiss and Drop Zone completely free for other traffic to quickly collect or deposit their children. A parking brochure is available which explains how the kiss and drop zones work on the website or at:http://issuu.com/scrobins/docs/final_parking_brochure

Gossip Free ZoneA gentle reminder that if any parents have issues with matters relating to school life, please talk with your child’s teacher. If the matter relates to the teacher and you do not feel the issue is resolved, please talk to the relevant deputy. We want to hear from you if you have concerns. Please talk to those who can implement change if it is deemed necessary.

Parent AssembliesThe first Primary Parent Assembly is scheduled for Thursday May 22. This will be presented by Mrs King’s and Mr Cooper’s Year 3/4 class. It will be held at the Auditorium at 2:00pm. Please note that children are NOT able to be released early if you attend, but must wait until the

conclusion of the school day. To help fill in those few minutes, afternoon tea will be served in the auditorium to any parents in attendance.

Cows Create Careers After our success in Cows Create Careers over the past years, we are about to embark on yet another project in 2014. As the division winners for the past 5 years, and the state winner for 4 of those, we clearly have a strong contribution to make to students in this unique learning opportunity. As an initiative of Dairy Australia, this event sees some calves come to the College to be cared for by students, who in the process, undertake studies and learning that run across a number of curriculum areas. Careers that can be linked with the dairy industry, ranging from veterinarians to cheese makers are considered during this course. The calves are due on site in weeks three and four of this term. It mainly applies to the Middle School students, but other students may derive benefit and interest of having the animals on campus.

NAPLANNAPLAN week is fast approaching for students in Years 3,5,7, and 9. Whilst as a College we can derive important data from the results, the testing can be unnecessarily stressful on students. We would appreciate your assistance in helping your children prepare, by ensuring they get enough rest and good nutrition, but please keep the pressure to a minimum. It is after all, just one test on one day, NAPLAN week is scheduled for May 13-15.

The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that.

Parent Information Evening

ANZAC DayRecently, the College had students representing us at the Busselton ANZAC Day events. The Dawn Service as well as the Street Parade had Cornerstone students participating. Thank you to those students and staff who made the effort to show respect to those who have sacrificed for our nation. Lest we Forget.

Primary School Parent Information EveningStudent Management System

Church auditorium, Wednesday May 7th, 7pm.

The Primary School will be introducing a renewed Student Management System. It will be similar to the current system and will apply to all students in the Primary School. It will include parents as a vital part of the process. Students will face increasing consequences if their behaviour does not improve. The College believes Student Management should be balanced with positive behaviour rewards. This meeting however will focus on the new system of student management. The policy relating to this can be found at:

http://issuu.com/scrobins/docs/student_management_system_policy

The following is a very brief overview of the system. The Student Management system operates over two consecutive terms. It is broken into three categories:1. INSIDE the classroom2. OUTSIDE the classroom3. INFRINGEMENTS

INSIDE the classroomStudents are given three opportunities to stop disruptive behaviour. The teacher (1) writes the name of the disruptive student onto the whiteboard. This is the student’s first warning. Further disruption by the same student will result in (2) a cross being placed next to their name. This is the second warning. Any further disruption from the same student, they are (3) sent to the office. All names are taken off the board after recess, lunch and after school. If a student receives eight send-outs they are permanently excluded from the College. OUTSIDE the classroomStudents can receive a light, moderate or severe outside offence. An outside offence could be issued before school, at recess, lunch, after school, outside College grounds whilst in College uniform or through social media. Light offences are dealt with by the teacher at the time of the incident. Each time a student commits a moderate outside offence, they are sent to the office and their name is recorded. Students will be given four chances to correct their behaviour, On the 4th moderate outside offence parents will receive a letter listing the offences. On the 5th outside moderate offence students are suspended from school for a full day.

If a student repeats this suspension procedure five times in one year they are permanently excluded from the College.

INFRINGEMENTSStudents are permitted to record a total of 24 infringements during two consecutive terms. At the 25th infringement, the student will be excluded from the College.

The work on Waratah Court is progressing nicely. We appreciate the patience being displayed by parents with this short term inconvenience. It is expected that by the end of next week, the first phase will be completed and that families will be able to resume use of this access to the College by Monday May 12th. Staff have vacated the front car park to aid in the management of traffic during this interim time.

Board ShortsThe College takes pleasure in continuing with the introduction of some of our Board Directors. This week we turn the spotlight onto Kingsley Chapman & Michael Wallace.

Kingsley Chapman has worked as a Science teacher at Cornerstone, but now works as a Pathologist at Busselton Hospital. Having worked in education and also in government, he has a deep appreciation for the work of the College and the difference that it can make in the lives of those who attend Cornerstone. Kingsley and his wife Lynn have a strong history with the church and College and are passionate about the work they see God doing.

Michael Wallace is a grain marketing consultant in the agriculture industry. He is passionate about Christian education and the start in life it gives you. Having done a majority of his schooling in Christian education he understands the values it can place in your life and how these then shine in years ahead.
