Science Roadshow—By Shaniqua Ngamotu

About 2 weeks ago the school held the Science

Roadshow and some students from Pukaki 2 got

the opportunity to step up to be leaders.

The beginning of the Science Roadshow

experience for all the groups was a show about

how to look after the equipment in the show and

some demonstrations about how the experiments worked. I had to make sure

that all our leaders were at their own experiments and make sure that they

knew how to explain the experiments.

The students from all the different schools were having a once in a lifetime

experience of what the Science Roadshow had to offer. They moved around all

the exhibits and checked out how the

experiments worked. We could see that they were

having a lot of fun while staying safe and learning

lots of science as they were using the equipment.

There were different kind of exhibits such as:

- The Air Cannon-Tipping Point-No Air Friction

-Cloud Formation-Rotating Chair-Balloon Bernoulli

-The Bed Of Nails-Post Driver-Magdeburg.

Real life math……. In class we have been focusing on how to work out a percentage of a whole number in relation

to discounts and sales during shopping. We are looking at financial capability this term and what skills and

understandings we will need to manage our money in the future. Understanding about shopping around and mak-

ing the choice about whether a sale or discount price is worth it has been a huge learning curve for us. We have also

been looking at the process of making good money decisions when we are out in our community shopping - how

can we, while in a store, estimate the savings we are going to make based on applying some basic math concepts

and knowledge. We walked into Rebel Sport in town with a budget of $500 to spend on 3 family members in an

early Christmas sale. We had a list of the discount % off items within the store and from there we had to make deci-

sions on what we would purchase to keep within budget. We found the items, checked their full cost price, found

their discount %, rounded the price to the nearest whole number and worked out our discount savings and

amount to be paid from there. It was such a fun task to do and it was super cool to apply the math we had learnt in

class to a real life concept - this is the reason we learn math so we can use it in our lives to better our futures.

We tackled the

Junior Tough Guy and Gal

Mud Challenge

again this year in support of

an amazing cause “Cure

Kids”.

We love giving back to the

community and knowing we

are part of such a fantastic

fundraising initiative—plus

getting dirty and extremely

muddy with our class mates

is always loads of fun!

We can’t wait to be a part of

it again next year at high

school.

Te Roro o te Rangi Market Day: In our whanau groups we

have designed, researched and budgeted a product to make and

sell on our whanau market day. We pitched our ideas to the

‘dragons den team’ and received our groups money for expens-

es...Then it was off to the shops to buy all our materials we had

budgeted for in our business plan. We are now making our

products ready for our market day, Thursday week 9.

Dragons Den Our focus for this term is Financial Capability. On whanau

days we have been planning and designing our own

businesses in small groups . We had to create a business

plan and a statement of financial performance. We pre-

sented our business plans in front of the Dragons Den and

waited anxiously to see if they accepted our proposal. There

are so many cool business ideas. We are busy making our

products to sell at our Whanau Market Day in Week 9. Here

is an example of a ‘Behind the Pages’ product. They are cre-

ating secret phone cases out of old books.

Maths Slide Each year we have a maths slide competition at school. This year

we had 6 representatives from our whanau. (Haeun, Helena, Des-

tiny, Carlos, Jasmine and Tyla). Congratulations to Haeun who is in

the top 4 for year 7s. Haeun will spend the day at Rotorua Cano-

py Tours with the other winners. What an awesome prize. We hope

you all enjoy your day out.

Ryoji’s time in Te Roro-o-te-Rangi 2

During week 6 Te Roro O Te Rangi 2 were privileged to have Ryoji in

our classroom. Ryoji is a teacher from Japan that has come to New Zea-

land to visit our school. While he was in our classroom he showed us an

awesome presentation about life in Japan.

Things are very different at school in Japan. One thing that surprised us

was that they have special inside shoes. They must take their outside

shoes off and put their inside shoes on when they enter their

classrooms. Ryoji taught us how to use chopsticks, how to make

origami sumo wrestlers and play a Japanese game.

Pathways A huge congratulations to Jade

McCormack-Bevin who received an award

at our Specialist Prize giving on Thursday.

Jade's hard work and expertise has been rec-

ognized in Adolescent Health.

This term, the focus in class has been financial capability. Students have looked at

everything from creating simple cashbooks to setting up their own flats and looking at the

costs associated with this.

The hope is to make them more aware of having financial responsibility.

That there is a ‘cost of living’ and to consider what are the best choices to

make. It was an interesting exercise initially as many students had no idea of

the actual cost of anything.

For example: A plate of fish and chips with 2 fish costing $1.50—’show me

to this fish and chip shop!!!’

What is deemed as essential first flat items included rice cookers, a

trampoline, and ‘Net Fix’. (I had to ask what this was. I had no idea)

The highlight for me this term, was sitting on the

panel for ‘Dragons Den’. The business groups had

to present their business proposals to this panel in

order to secure loans to start producing their goods.

A really interesting and fun experience.

They have played financial games relishing in the

fact that for that round they weren't made

bankrupt and also, as a Whanau team, formed

business groups to make and sell products for the

Te Roro Market Day on the 17th September,

Week 9.

For one homework exercise, they

had to plan, price and cook a meal

for their family.

From here they have been working

on grocery lists for their flats for a

week, including meal

planning.

Our new class pet;

George the lamb George was abandoned by his mum at

2 hours old, in a paddock on Whaea

Sheree’s farm. He was put inside by

the fire and fed a bottle of lambs milk.

The next day we arrived at school and

could hear this bleating!! What is that

noise?? And what is that smell?? Oh

wow! It’s a lamb! He stayed in our

classroom for a week. We fed him

every 3 hours and toileted him too. We

learnt so much about caring for anoth-

er being, empathy, patience, kindness

and consideration.

We loved him to pieces! He has now

joined the ‘real’ sheep and is back on

Whaea Sheree’s farm.

Te Roro o te Rangi 4 visit Rainbow Springs What a great way to end an inquiry about the NZ Kiwi.

We fundraised and worked together to ensure we could continue our learning.

We were very privileged to go behind the scenes and see a 12 hour old kiwi chick.

We thought they should call him Te Roro o te Rangi.

The highlight of the day was the ‘Big Splash”.
