Mawdesley Parish Council Hello All Spring is here, and with the arrival of warmer weather and longer days we have seen the role out of our long awaited, new speed limits throughout the village. You cannot have failed to notice that we now have 20mph in the centre of the village , including all main residential areas and 30mph on the approach to these zones. We are working with Lancashire County Council and the Highway Department to rectify any old incorrect signage that may be causing confusion. We are however aware that driving at 20mph can be frustrating and does feel very slow, but please consider that the Department of Transport research on the effectiveness of 20mph zones has shown that casualties can fall by up to 70% where they have been introduced. If a vehicle hits a child at 20mph, the child has a 95% chance of survival. Hit at 30mph, they have an 80% chance of survival. At 40mph, the chance of survival is nearly 0%. Please try and keep to the limits. We have a new village caretaker in Mr Steve Blackemore. Many of you will know Steve and will have seen him around the village. One of Steve’s many responsibilities is litter collection; this does not mean you can throw your litter down and Steve will be there to pick it up. Please take your litter home or use one of the bins provided. As you can appreciate Steve cannot get around the village every day. Wind turbines! Love them, or hate them, they have arrived, although in part. We have spoken with the owner and have been informed that two out of the three are installed and operational. The third and final turbine is to be with us sometime this summer. We will of course keep you updated on this. Again this year we have entered the Lancashire Best Kept Village contest. Could we please remind all dog owners to “bag it and bin it”, however please try not to use general litter bins, the one in the children’s play area was nearly 1/2 full of foul bags. Dog foul bins are provided and we are working with the Local Authority to get some more. Please also be aware that dogs are not permitted within the play area. We have a vacant position on the Parish Council. Unfortunately our Chair, Cllr. Jean Poval has had to resign from her position due to illness. I and the other members of the Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to thank Jean for her commitment, dedication and enthusiasm she has shown over the past few years. She has worked tirelessly to help promote the village and to make it a better place for us all to live and work. We all wish her well for the future. For those of you who are interested in joining the Parish Council please send a letter, stating your interest to the Parish Clerk. Our April meeting on Wednesday 11th April is the Annual General Meeting; all are welcome. We have a particular interesting guest speaker from private practise building control. He will be explaining the basics of the Building Regulations, with specific emphasis on the homeowner’s responsibilities when undertaking alterations. See you all at the Queens Jubilee Celebrations on the Millennium Green. Martin Boardman Vice Chairman – Mawdesley Parish Council Spring Chairman’s Chatter ! Newsletter

Mawdesley Variety Show 2012Mawdesley Amateur Dramatics Society performed their annual Variety Show on Friday February 10th and Saturday February 11th in the village hall. The show is now in its fifth year and has become a popular event in the society’s calendar between their pantomime and annual play. This year’s show involved cast members both young and not so young and was once again produced and compered by Finlay Robertson who entertained the audience between acts with his inimitable self-deprecatory humour and jokes. As usual the hall was suitably set out in a cabaret-style table plan with waitress service to create a wonderful atmosphere for the audience.

The show included a mix of music, sketches, monologues and jokes. Sofie Addison-Harris from Mawdesley and Emma Meen each performed a couple of songs and local singer Jim Marsh concluded the first half of the show by performing a set of country / rockabilly songs to the delight of the audience.

Each year the Variety Show features a Sherlock Holmes spoof and this year was no exception as Holmes & Watson foiled the devilish scheme of Moriarty yet again in The Affair of Lady Ruth Monacle in a sketch replete with gags and slapstick.

The highlights this year included a comedy musical sketch Sister Act written by Evelyn Wilding of Eccleston, the popular Margaret Singleton monologues as well as the cast’s hilarious lesson intalking Swedish.

Before the final number the audience was treated to a performance of the hilarious Lauri Wylie sketch Dinner for One starring Bridgett Welch as the elderly Miss Sophie and Tommy Train who rushed back from the Isle of Man specially to take part as her butler James. Tommy’s comedic antics included a fight with a large stuffed lion ending in them both falling off the stage! The evening concluded with the cast performing the hit song ‘Thank You For The Music’.

Both evenings were enjoyed by all and our thanks go to all those who helped both in the preparation of the hall as well as those who made the event such a huge success. (Mawdesley Amateur Dramatics Society meets every Wednesday evening from 7:45pm in the village hall).

Mawdesley Bowling Club

The Royal British Legion premises in Hurst Green have been the home to Mawdesley Bowling Club for almost 100 years and many villagers have long associations with this friendly club. Crown Green bowling provides an ideal opportunity for local people to partake in social or competitive bowling and meet many of our local residents and some of our regular visitors. As well asbowling we hold a number of social events each year.

Periodically we encourage people from around the Village to ‘have a go’, and for those of you who have never tried the sport we will be holding an ‘Open Day’ commencing at 1 p.m. on Wednesday 16th May. For those of you who have never played, we will provide free use of the Green, equipment and individual tuition on the day. All you will need to bring along is a pair of flat shoes or trainers, and if the weather looks like rain it would be worth bringing a waterproof top.

If anyone is keen to have a go sooner, we run social bowling sessions every Thursday & Saturday mornings between 10.00am and 12 noon, usually April to September. These sessions are normally supported by at least one ‘coach’ and will cost you a £2 green fee when you visit. For those of you who join our band of regulars and want to find a cheaper way of enjoying a regular game, we offer full membership, and reduced rates for juniors.

Mawdesley bowling club has just short of 100 members and have a good mix of social andcompetitive players. Should you feel the urge to compete we run 10 teams in various local leagues and can always find room for new players.

Mawdesley Cricket Club – Sport at the heart of the CommunityLong History Every year since 1908, apart from the war years when the ground was turned over to growing vegetables, cricket has been played on the Rectory Field in Mawdesley. Many through the generations from the village and surrounding areas have played cricket on the Rectory Field and have fond memories of the hours spent enjoying themselves on glorious warm sunny summer afternoons, as well as a number of wet windy ones

New Teams and New Pavilion Looking forward, the Cricket Club have big plans for 2012 with an extra senior team playing friendly matches on a Sunday and two extra junior teams playing mid week in the evenings making it seven junior teams in total. To accommodate its increasing numbers, the Club is applying to the National Lottery and the Lancashire Cricket Board for grant funding to replace its ageing pavilion which was acquired second hand in 1978 and was opened by Clive Lloyd when he was then captain of Lancashire. The new building with modern up to date changing facilities and improved refreshment areas will be designed to look like a traditional cricket pavilion to compliment both the cricket field and the village.

Junior Cricket The growth in junior members over the past six years and the achievement in becoming a Lancashire Cricket Board Focus Club in recognition of its coaching programme for young players [the Club currently has seven ECB qualified coaches and three more taking their coaching badges this year], has resulted in the Club becoming a real force in local junior cricket. Our Under 15 junior team now competes in the top division of the Southport league alongside the larger clubs from Southport, Rainford, Ormskirk, Burscough and Ainsdale etc. With Mawdesley junior players now regularly being picked to represent Chorley District, the standard of junior cricket is up with the best in the District, a remarkable achievement for a small village Club. The Club runs teams at Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18 age groups. Junior training is normally on a Sunday morning with matches played in the evenings midweek. For more details please contact Martin Trengove, the Club’s Junior Coordinator, on 01704 821023.

Senior Cricket The senior teams [first and seconds] moved last season to the Lancashire wide Palace Shield competition in search of a higher standard of cricket. Both teams narrowly missed promotion in their first season and confidence is high that this year will bring the success that so narrowly eluded them last. Seniors play their league cricket on Saturday afternoons and friendly games on Sunday afternoons as well as training on Tuesday evenings. If you would like to take up cricket or start playing again, please contact Paul Steadman the Club’s Chair and Second Team captain on 01704 821867.

Non Playing Help Wanted Would you like to get involved with the Club? Perhaps you are an ex player wanting to get involved again without having to play!! We are always looking for volunteers to help look after the ground, coach the juniors and manage the junior teams.

In addition, we are in need of people to score or umpire at games for which we are able to pro-vide full training and payment for each match in which you help. Please contact Martin Lewis the Club Secretary [07962 582610 or email [email protected]] if you would like to get involved with the Club in any capacity.

War Memorial Flowers/PlantsIt has long been a tradition in the village to place flowers/plants on the War Memorial. Sadly this small token of respect for those who gave their lives in the two World Wars has fallen by the wayside. Along with the Parish Council I am keen to reinstate this tradition and set up monthly rota of village residents/organisations providing and placing seasonal flow-ers/plants on the memorial. If you are interested in this activity would you please contact Ian Clayton on 01704 822733, stating the month in which you wish to be included.
