Prachi’s experience with WORDZ“Working with Wordz hasn’t transformed me at all”, this would be an incorrect statement to be made by me.. I joined Wordz on an experimental basis so as to explore my capabilities of working in a students’ organization. though my first step was an experiment, the year and a half long journey with Wordz was an incredible experience. the amiable and humble personality of all the Wordz members added many cherished memories to this unforgettable journey.

As I grew up, I always heard everyone say that school is a protected environment and it’s tough to find the same

comfort and security anywhere else and like any other kid, I never paid attention towards it. But once school was over and the journey began in college, it was a world with new possibilities and opportunities and I often felt lost. there was a fear of being alienated in the crowd and never being able to find a place for myself. But in the midst of everything I was at least sure of one thing that I am never going to lose hope and work to the best of my capabilities to shine in the crowd. It so happened that one fine day, I randomly filled up a recruitment form for the position of a

volunteer for WORDZ Open Workshop’11 and nervously waited to hear from them. the day I got a confirmation from the team that I was selected, my life evolved completely. Starting as a volunteer three years back to being the leader of the Delhi chapter today seems surreal to me. After joining WORDZ I met a lot of people who were way more experienced than me and I made a promise to myself I will try to bring out the best in me and prove to be an asset to WORDZ.

During my journey at WORDZ, I grew by leaps and bounds as an individual. My contribution to WORDZ has made me confident and hardworking, and thanks to this organization I fully understand the meaning of the words – commitment, zeal and passion.

Over the years with every project in hand there was always something new which we learnt as a team and took it forward with us. At WORDZ we were always given the liberty to venture into something new and to experiment. Because of this freedom, we were able to organize a photography event in 2012 called “La Fotographia” which emphasized on photography as a means of expressing oneself to WORDZPDC’12. WORDZ In-Quiz-Itive’13 was also something very different from the previous events and the success is completely attributed to the amount of efforts put in by everyone.

having an outreach amongst the students of colleges and schools, we feel humbled by the magnanimity of the entrusted upon us. In accordance with our vision, we provide anyone even remotely attached with WORDZ, a platform to recognize their latent talent and eventually help them turn their dreams to reality.

DIRECtOR'S DESk

At WORDZ Delhi, everything is not only seen as an opportunity for our team but also as a way to materialize and encourage the vision of our trustees and to give back to the society.

the Chronicle of Wordz: A trailblazing legacy

By Maithili Mishrathe genesis of Wordz certainly saw such pioneers. Its launch created a dent in the communication world, reinventing co-scholastic activities at university and school level. With its vision of fostering a culture of discussion and debates, Wordz has helped many students master the art of assertive communication. Innovation is our core competency. nation’s first inter-school Parliamentary Debating Championship was

conducted by Wordz in 2012 at Mayoor School, noida, trailblazing the way for some of the most loved, witty and spontaneous debates.

the commitment to help students embrace the unparalleled power of the platform led Wordz into organising MUn training workshops. Myriad institutes like IIt Delhi, DPS noida, Modern School Barakhamba, Bal Bharti Public School, the Shri Ram School Aravalli played hosts for Wordz’s dynamic workshops which elucidated the nuts and bolts of MUn experience with expertise and panache. January of 2012 saw 200 delegates exuding savoir faire at the Pathways World School MUn conference. More such conferences were conducted at Bal Bharti Public School, cementing Wordz’ position as a versatile communication skill building organization. Stepping up the game with each endeavor, it has been a two- way learning journey.Photography has arguably become one of the most potent instruments of communication for the contemporary artist. Its versatility, suggested truthfulness and the way in which artists distort or interpret ''reality'' offers an infinite potential of perception, interpretation and execution. Wordz Delhi again reinvented itself by organizing a photography competition, “La Fotografia”, keeping its soul of high impact communication intact. As surely, the indelible words of the celebrated photographer, Ansel Adams,

say it all, “A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words” Following its tradition of non conformity, Wordz ventured to conduct its first ever quizzing event, “WORDZ In-QUIZ-tive’13” at DPS Gurgaon, a high octane battle of the sharpest minds. trailblazers to the core, Wordz’s stellar team has broadened its vision and impact with each venture. It’s been a great journey. Like living the dream. Wordz Delhi’s pursuits have left behind its footprints on the sands of time. Plethora of memories, lifelong lessons and a legacy of excellence. But this is just the beginning!

WORDZ InQUIZItIVE’13

WORDZ InQUIZItIVE '13

Winners of WORDZ InQUIZItIVE '13

It all started months back sitting at Dunkin Donuts, we were throwing about random ideas about just what could be the next Wordz event. It had been a year since the hugely successfully PDC, and so we were looking to recreate a similar magic in 2013 as well. We thought, discussed, disposed, sighed collectively, laughed, brainstormed, and finally settled with what culminated as a sweeping triumph on18th December 2013 at DPS Gurgaon – WORDZ In-QUIZ-itive ‘ 13.

16 teams, 48 Students, and teacher advisors braved the dense early morning fog to turn up for the event which was in truth the very first WORDZ quizzing event, but what looked like a seasoned Quizzing phenomenon.

We started off the event on a high note, with the Principal, Ms. Aditi Misra addressing the gathering and generously showering praises for the WORDZ team and their work. the quizmasters and content providers for the event were members from DtU’s official quiz club Delhi-42, who were astoundingly engaging and made for excellent (and entertaining!) quizmasters!

the competition was split into 3 rounds. the first two rounds were aimed at preliminary selection of

teams to go into the third and final round. teams with high scores in the elimination rounds

were also rewarded with useful goodies like San Disk PenDrives!

the first elimination round shortlisted 10 teams for the second elimination round, after which the 6 final teams were selected to battle their wits out in the heart-racing and exciting Final Round.

there were short tea and lunch breaks to serve as breathers in between the rounds, and also, as they say, the brain cannot function on an empty stomach!

the final round was further split up into four quarters of 12 questions each, to be followed up by a particularly enthralling audio-visual round. the eclectic mix of questions fired up the inquisitive spirit in not just the participating teams, but the audience alike, and the eliminated teams who were seen intently gazing at the screen and raking their brains to figure out the answers to the quizmasters’ questions.

What set apart WORDZ In-QUIZ-itive'13 from the rest of the quizzing events was how it was not simply a facts- based quiz. the questions were framed in such a way that one had to be at their analytical best to be able to decode them. It required not just a good hand at trivia, but an acute awareness of

current affairs, along with an inquisitive mind that is prepared to think and ponder over subtle details and incongruities in the questions.

“this is the best quiz I’ve attended so far!,” exclaimed a student towards the end of the event.

the event concluded with an address by the Director of WORDZ Delhi, as well as the Vice Principal of the school. the prizes were distributed to the winning teams: Modern School, Barakhamba Road bagged the first prize, whereas SRDAV Public School and DPS R.k. Puram emerged first and second runners-up, respectively. the winning team led by a huge margin of 55 points, whereas the first and second runners-up differed only by a mere 5 points. Members of the WORDZ team were also felicitated for their hardwork, and appreciation certificates were given to the quizmasters for their support.

the teachers as well as participating students agreed that the competition was one of its kind, and a learning experience for them.

the day was a heady affair for the WORDZ team. Apart from the running around to ensure the event runs smoothly and the participants have a good time, we realized how fun quizzes could be and wished if only we could have participated alongside the teams!

“true leaders don’t create followers, they create leaders.”

I proudly state that at Wordz we train to create world leaders. Since 2010, we’ve trained more than 4,000 students from around 40 different institutions in Delhi nCR. In 2013 alone, thousands of students were benefited from Wordz training sessions for Model United nations, public speaking and Parliamentary Debates, which instilled ingenious oratory skills in them.

Model United nations is a co-curricular activity where students from different institutions come together to simulate Un Councils, including but not limited to: human Rights Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social

WORDZ training Sessions

Council and Security Council. here, a student steps into a diplomat’s shoes and represents the best interests of the country one is allotted for a particular agenda. they are marked upon the rules of procedures, courteous interrogation, formal behavior, lobbying and resolution making skills. At Wordz training sessions, we make sure that everyone assimilates the MUn procedures by holding a Mock MUn session on the second day of trainings. Our training methodology not only includes presentations, handouts and worksheets but also icebreakers, activities and energizers where students have fun as they learn. this year our MUn training sessions were held at Pathways World School, Bal Bharati Public School Ganga Ram hospital Marg, Bal Bharati Public School Pitampura and Bal Bharati Public School Brij Vihar etc. the enriching experience of the students

was evident from the valuable feedback and encouragement that we received.

Parliamentary Debates are simulations of Indian Parliamentary Committees. After the phenomenal success of WORDZ Parliamentary Debate Championship 2012, we have been offered to give training for parliamentary debates by many prestigious institutions. this year we trained students in the art of Parliamentary Debate at renowned institutions like Shri Ram school, Gurgaon and Lady hardinge Medical College, new Delhi.

this is just the beginning of a journey to a world where speech shall be the ultimate power to unleash the revolutionary abilities inherent in every human. Watch us reach the world to unleash the power of speech!

We talk. We write. We text. We whatsapp. We tweet. We read. We observe. We listen. What we are eventually doing through all of this is expressing and communicating with the world outside our self being. the world who does not know us otherwise, attempts to interpret our dialogue and actions in as many kaleidoscopic variations as possible. We are not only confronted with the challenge to understand these interpretations, but also cope up with the ever changing nature of this world. My understanding of being able to stand up to this challenge is through a continuous process of self evolvement. WORDZ as an organization seeks to assist every team member, every participant, every facilitator, and every event organizer in understanding their way to take up this challenge. A small team comprising of only undergraduate students being guided by a handful of seniors and trustees, is the best defining aspect of this organization. Every challenge, every task, every meeting, and every decision gives this team an ability to have a vision with greater clarity.having been very closely associated with Delhi Chapter

of WORDZ, I have seen the growth of WORDZ Delhi and the people involved in the truest sense. this organization has given people clarity of their passions, with many of them successfully pursuing them from Universities in India and abroad. today, WORDZ has grown from an organization known for conducting WORDZ MUn to an organization which explores unknown areas to give us successful events like WORDZ Parliamentary Debate Championship, La fotografia to the very recently conducted WORDZ In-Quiz-Itive'13. there never is a doubt on the potential of the young people of this country, however this potential needs to be identified and refined. Small initiatives taken by this organization will be visible in the form of great future leaders in every field- technology, politics, economics, industry, education etcetera. I will always be looking forward to the annual edition of this newsletter, as it gives me an assurance that the direction towards which WORDZ Delhi is heading, points towards growth and opportunities.

the uphill battle to excel in MUn workshops and Parliamentary Debate training sessions was followed by the unforgettable quizzing championship called WORDZ In-Quiz-Itive'13 . We received the most invaluable feedback from various schools and teachers who experienced the astounding power of speech. All schools were extremely enthusiastic about the new idea of quizzing. the WORDZ In-Quiz-Itive’13 championship exhibited a very unique way of propagating the essence of knowledge and creativity in the society.the level of competition was also a topic in constant discussion. “the questions were not too easy nor were they too difficult”, exclaimed a participant, “Rather, it was fun!”

Our MUn workshops and parliamentary debating workshops take place throughout the year. Many teachers appreciated the fact that at Wordz, college students organize such events for school students. they firmly believe that college students can associate better with the school students. Also, they acknowledged the inspirational teaching methodology of Wordz.

however, we still believe that many spheres can be worked upon and improved. We’re always working towards the best!
