PASTOR’S NOTESailing, Sailing, Over the Ocean Blue!
Those of us who are blessed to spend most of our lives in the
beautiful MidWest don’t have much experience with sailing, but the
Vacation Bible School theme - High Seas Adventure - was a great
reminder that much of the New Testament is set near or even IN large
bodies of water.
One of my favorite stories is found in Mark - when Jesus and his
disciples get into a storm on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples are afraid
and Jesus chides them after calming the storm. I heard a preacher boil
the story down to three sentences: Get in the boat. There will be rough
waters. Jesus is here. You will not die.
There are lots of times in life when
storms overtake us and it is good to
know that NOTHING is stronger
than Jesus’ love. He will see us
through.
See you at church,
Pastor Cindy

To the ends of the earth and back!
Jeri and Kirk Kirkland had a terrific experience on their
trip to Malawi, Africa in July. They met and worshipped
with the poorest people on earth, saw God working in new
ways, and were charged by a big angry elephant!
Amazing stuff !
They will share their experiences with
us in worship as soon as they’ve
rested up and organized some of the
great pictures they took. We look
forward to that, and, in the
meantime, thank God for their trip and their safe return.
PHILO PRES
Skye enjoys the singing at VBS.
PhiloPres Hospitality AppreciatedThe Synod of Lincoln Trails (the Presbyterian
governing body directly above the Presbytery) met at Philo Pres. on July 24th. The Afternoon Circle (along with help from Jeanne Martin) cooked and served up a delicious lunch and kept the coffee flowing throughout the day.
Several Synod delegates expressed gratitude for the use of the church and the great meal. One told me, “Whenever we come here, my heart just overflows with joy and peace. The church building is so lovely and everyone is so hospitable!” Yeah Philo Presbys! (Our secret is out!)
Hospitality of a Different SortWe also “hosted” a guest names Theodore for
several days in July. Theodore comes around once a year, soliciting work from area churches. He is an elderly man from Ohio who parks his van in the church lot and trims bushes and washes windows in exchange for a fee, which he negotiates pretty hard :-)
This year he stayed a bit longer than usual, as we tried to get his brake lights fixed before he got back on the road.
Here’s the Theodore quote for the year: Asked if he’d enjoyed a hamburger Tim made him, he said, “The meat was pretty good. But it was awfully small! I guess you can’t afford meat.” A character, for sure.
Vacation Bible School ReportCUPS Vacation Bible School is always fun! This year’s theme
was “High Seas Adventure” and focussed on the Book of Acts.
Terry Pratt was a Crew Leader, Karen Talbott was in charge of
the Nursery, Teri Patton lead the Recreation Portion of the evening
(with an assist from Mary Simon) and Pastor Cindy generally hung
out and had fun.
Students from Philo Pres were: Adam, Lynddsay and Kailee
Talbot, Tori Patton, Skye and Sadie Silver, and Arianna Bonner.
Thanks to EVERYONE who donated food! Great job!

Prairie Dog/Picnic/Potluck in PresbyPark
Our friends from Tolono Pres joined us and the Prairie Dog Bluegrass Band led us in worship on July 25. The Rev. Kerry Bean and Pastor Cindy led prayer and praise. Fried chicken and potluck followed worship, along with more great music. And the weather was warm but perfect! Plenty of shade and and plenty of love made for a great morning.

COMING UP IN AUGUST
Yes, We CanSome of the women of the
church have expressed an interest in
learning how to “can” some of the
bounty of summer. We have some
experienced “can-do”ers, too, and
hope to get them together in our
beautiful church kitchen to put up a
batch of spaghetti sauce. Watch the
bulletin and check on the website
for a date, which should be
forthcoming soon.
An Overview of the
New TestamentThis fall Pastor Cindy will lead
a 6 week adult class - probably on
Wednesday or Thursday nights -
that will introduce participants to
the various kinds of books in the
New Testament.
If you have ever wondered how
to tell the Gospels apart, or what
makes a book “an epistle” - - - or if
you would just like a refresher
course on early Christian writing,
please plan to be a part of this short
term class.
Each week will be “self-
contained” for those who may not
be able to make every session, and
there will be minimal homework.
Call the church office and let
Pastor Cindy know you’re
interested. We’ll find a time and
format that works for as many as
possible.

26th (Thursday) at
Lampstand Presbyterian
Church in Decatur. The

and last until 3.
• If you’d like to go (with
Pastor Cindy) call the church
office. Each church is
entitled to be represented by
clergy and an elder.
