Editorial - Contemporary issues from the network

Dear ladies, dear gentlemen,

“Another year passed” …, it was the first in our new organisational structure. The financial

year ending on October 31st 2015, was very intensive and challenging – nevertheless it was

successful. The association BioNanoNet as owner of the BioNanoNet GmbH gave a very

clear and well developed strategic roadmap for the operative implementation. Several

success stories could be achieved i.e. in the project-acquisition for our members, new

members joined BioNanoNet association, and the cooperation with and in between our

members and supporting organizations could be strengthened by the activities and

initiatives throughout the year. The success of a collaboration depends on the activity of

each partner – your activity. Hence, we want to say “thank you again”– to all our members

and partners – for your continuous collaboration, the high-quality scientific work and

excellent contributions which helped further shaping the profile of the thematic focus

groups.

BioNanoNet usually works in the background and needs your feedback to continuously im-

prove our service and offerings. Due to this it is very important that you directly tell us what

needs to be optimized as well as activities you see important and useful supporting your

work. We learned and want to learn from you and from the experiences we made in the fo-

cus group meetings and strategy workshops, and we will implement these findings in our

future events and of course in our next strategy meeting.

Finally, it is our pleasure to invite all BioNanoNet members to participate at our BioNanoNet

Strategy & Networking Event including the General Meeting of the BioNanoNet

Association which will take place on 15th of September 2016 in Graz. Furthermore it will be

our 10 years anniversary which we will also celebrate with you at this day and we hope to

be able to welcome you at this special event.

Merry Christmas and a joyful, successful and healthy New Year!

Federal Government Austria invites to the idea competition "Open Innovation"

The challenges of our time require new approaches that allow us to think outside the box.

Austria's Federal Government offers an open innovation strategy to connect with the citi-

zens.

Open innovation means opening the innovation process. Ideas and impulses can be con-

tributed to specific issues (for example "sharing economy"). This allows solutions to prob-

lems, suggestions for improvement or new services to be jointly developed and evolved.

The Federal Government Austria therefore invites to participate in the idea competition

"Open Innovation". Each interested lateral thinker can submit, comment and rate ideas until

January 18, 2016.

R2R Biofluidics – Meeting of the General Board

When? 29 September – 1 October 2015

Where? Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain

After the Kick-off meeting in February 2015 in Graz, the R2R Biofluidics consortium met

again at the premises of Tecnalia Research & Innovation, Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain.

Project coordinator Dr. Stefan Köstler from JOANNEUM RESEARCH MATERIALS – Insti-

tute for surface technologies and photonics welcomed all attendees followed by a short pro-

ject overview and an introduction of project reviewer Prof. Dr.in Silvia Schintke. Each partner

presented their progress/highlights made during the first 8 months of the project followed by

a discussion about the former results and planned future work of the R2R Biofluidics pro-

ject. On the second meeting day, the project partners focused on work package discussions

in order to define next activities and action points for the upcoming months.

The project R2R-Biofluidics aims on the development of a complete process chain for first-

time realization of production lines for two selected bioanalytical lab-on-chip devices (e.g.;

in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) chip and a neuron based high-throughput screening assay) based

on high throughput R2R nanoimprinting in combination with complementary printing and

manufacturing technologies. BioNanoNet is responsible for the evaluation of potential haz-

ards and safety issues as well as regulatory issues, and is closely working together with

Tecnalia Research & Innovation, which carries out biocompatibility and cytotoxicity studies

of the coating and resist materials used in the project following the protocols described in

the ISO 10993 standard. Moreover, BioNanoNet is responsible for the day-to-day manage-

ment of the whole project.

The overall aim by BioNanoNet’s nanosafety team is to ensure that all aspects of the in-

volved processes will be conform to the “Safe by Design” concept for the technological de-

velopment. The reports on safety screenings along the development processes (WP3-WP5)

and demonstrators (WP7-WP8) will be consolidated towards an overall report on "Evidence

of R2R-Biofluidics products safety”. BioNanoNet set out the progress made in implementing

its safety strategy and objectives regarding the safety issues and assessment of resist ma-

terials/formulations and coating processes for R2R imprinting, which will later be included in

an executive safety summary report that will be extracted from the overall report and will be

disseminated to public audience. This document provides a nano-related safety guidance to

industry and other stakeholders (e.g., academia, other regulatory groups) and is intended to

assist in identifying the potential safety and regulatory issues during the production of mi-

crofluidic lab-on-chip devices.

Workshop on EU-U.S. and International Cooperation at the EU Brokerage Event on KET in Horizon 2020

When? 1 October 2015

Where? Strasbourg, France

Under the scope of the BILAT USA 2.0, EU-U.S. and International Cooperation work-

shop has been organized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) within

the “EU Brokerage Event on KET1 in Horizon 2020”, on 1 October 2015 in Strasbourg.

The overall goal of this workshop is to exchange of knowledge on European and U.S. cut-

ting edge research and innovation capacities on the specific topics of the Nanotechnology

based on the (draft) work programme 2016-2017 of the H2020. The workshop also aimed

to identify the common interests based on existing cooperation activities and facilitating new

collaborations within the Horizon 2020.

After opening remarks from Professor Savolainen, Mrs. Clara de la Torre, the director of

Key Enabling Technologies (KET) at the European Commission welcomed the session par-

ticipants. In her speech she emphasized the Commissioner Moedas’s 3 Os: Open innova-

tion, Open science and Opening to the world.

After outlining the major areas of H2020 she focused on the KET 2016-2017work pro-

gramme and indicated that manufacturing is on the backbone of the work programme as

being the biggest user and demander of the Key Enabling Technologies. She also empha-

sized the “impact” as one of the major areas in proposal evaluation.

As opening to the world is one of the 3 goals of the H2020, Mrs. de la Torre indicated that

international cooperation is not only about funding, but more about exchanging knowledge

and experience and tackle the grand challenges of the century together. She also indicated

that regulations do not refer to certain territory but rather scientific base on common stand-

ards. She ended her speech by saying that scientists are ambassadors and it is worth to

working together.

1 Focus on Key Enabling Technologies,- nanotechnologies, advanced materials, advanced manufacturing and processing

Major Discussions & Outcomes

The most critical issue in nanosafety area is uncertainty and building trust in industry. If the

industry knows the regulatory landscape is safe, then they are encouraged to make invest-

ments. International cooperation is therefore very important for nanosafety because of

providing a single approach for all industry and for policy makers rather than each national

center having different regulations. This global approach certainly reduces the uncertainty.

US-EU Nano EHS Communities of Research (CoRs) have been working since 2012. How-

ever, there are some challenges such as lack of incentives for researchers working in

these CoRs. It is recommended to develop sufficient incentives, such as organizing work-

shops and providing travel grants to bring researchers together, encouraging young scien-

tists to work together with others and produce joint publications. Therefore cooperation with

projects like BILAT USA 2.0 or any other support actions are very valuable and provide

these opportunities.

What is unique with the US NCL is they just do not provide the data but also provide sup-

port to companies for defending the data and getting venture capital.

Under environmental health and safety issues there are relatively less concern on IPR,

which facilitates international collaboration.

The most important added value of US participation in the EUNCL Network is standardiza-

tion of methods and how it is used in the regulatory. They also facilitate the communication

between FDA and EMEA through NCL and EUNCL. Common protocol (between EU and

US) creates confidence in industry.

Lack of (automatic) EU funding for US researchers and some specific legal issues (such as

Grant agreement) can be very challenging for the potential US partners. In order to tackle

this barrier BILAT USA 2.0 referred to co-funding instruments that some other international

partner countries such as China and Russia have been using as example. Also better ad-

justment of the timing of the calls (at the EU level-H2020 and in the U.S) can also support

joint collaboration efforts. Nevertheless participants agreed that coming together help to

understand each other. Funding is important though as 2nd step.

BioNanoNet was referred by some of the speakers as a potential contact with regard to

‘Closer to the market“-Roadmap-initiative of NanoSafetyCluster. BioNanoNet participated in

this workshop in its role as leading organization of the “closer to the market”-initiative and

as one of the key nodes in European NanoSafety community. The EU-US-collaboration in

the NanoSafety-field will be further increased by a coordination and support action and

workshops with key stakeholders from US and European community.

When? 15 October 2015

Where? Kidlington, Oxford, United Kingdom

One important activity of BioNanoNet within the H2020 project INSPIRED is to visit all pro-

ject partners who are actively working with nanomaterials. BioNanoNet is working on the

nanosafety assessment, which includes to learn about the whole workflow and the specific

processes where nanomaterials are involved in project partners sites.

On October 15th 2015, BioNanoNet visited the M-Solv Ltd company in Kidlington – Oxford,

UK, to screen all processes, relevant in INSPIRED project, related to printing and spray

deposition of diverse nanoinks, and to identify potential risks and hazards during each step.

The on-site visit also included a guided tour through the lab facilities, discussions with the

technical developers, printing experts as well as health and safety managers. In addition to

this, nanosafety-related topics e.g. personal protective equipment used by employees while

operating with nanomaterials, have been addressed. The next steps within the project will

be to optimize the safe handling of nanomaterials and to elaborate recommendations for

exposure and risk prevention.

Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology, and because its applications in medical set-

tings can range from diagnostics to therapeutics to medical devices, it has the potential to

provide major health benefits for all. Indeed, cooperation with other components is crucial to

provide medical applications with complete innovative solutions, for the benefit of the pa-

tients. This approach requires collaborations within the larger ecosystem, including special-

ists from biomaterials, Medtech, In-vitro diagnostics, biosensors, ICT.

Patrick Boisseau, chairman of ETPN stated “The ETPN is happy to celebrate its 10th anni-

versary at Trinity College Dublin, which is representing one of the few places in Europe

where the various facets of developing nanomedicine, namely research, development and

clinical validation and industrialization, are addressed in a converging approach from edu-

cation to product to market launch including the regulatory approval.

The ETPN annual event provided a wide range of sessions and services during three days.

Day 1: ETP Nanomedicine General Assembly o ETPN key facts & activities in 2014-2015 o Vote of the Action Plan for 2016-2017 o Renewal of the executive board o Working Groups meetings (Nanodiagnostics & Imaging; Nanotherapeutics &

Targeted Delivery; Nanotechnologies for Regenerative Medicine)

H2020 o Workshop on Regenerative Medicine o SME² (SME Square) meeting

Many new Nanomedicine products are currently under advanced clinical trials and, as a

result, a major theme of ETPN is how to accelerate and support the translation from re-

search innovation to product-to-market introduction. These aspects has been notably dis-

cussed in Dublin under the Translation Advisory Board, an innovative initiative driven by

the EU funded project ENATRANS, providing free strategic advice, support and concrete

recommendations from a group of experts to the promising nanomedicine projects. TAB is

part of ETPN Translation Hub as well as other initiatives including EU-NCL (Nanomedicine

Characterization Lab), GMP pilot lines and SME instrument. Ten applicants to the TAB has

successfully participated to the first individual live sessions of advisory during Day 3 of

ETPN annual event.

The ambitious Action Plan voted during the General Assembly of ETPN in Trinity Col-

lege of Dublin will be the framework of a new decisive era of structuration of the Eu-

ropean Nanomedicine ecosystem, offering a clear vision on how to bring faster inno-

vation from nanotechnologies to patients.

ABOUT ETP Nanomedicine – http://www.etp-nanomedicine.eu/public

The European Technology Platform Nanomedicine was established in 2005 as a joint ven-

ture of the European Commission and CEOs of large industrial companies, SMEs and aca-

demic research institutions to investigate and advance joint activities in the area of nano-

technology in medicine. Since 2005 the ETPN published a number of strategic documents

outlining the needs and roadmaps for nanomedicine research in Europe. The ETPN con-

tributed to set up numerous European funded projects providing a first impression of the

conditions for a suitable social and economic environment and the structural requirements

for an efficient translation of R&D results into innovative nanomedicine. The ETPN supports

its members in coordinating their joint research efforts and improving communication

amongst the members as well as towards the European Commission and the European

Member States.

BioNanoNet is member of the Executive Board of the ETPN, vice-chair of the working group

“Toxicology & Characterisation”, and the Austrian contact point as “Nanomedicine-Austria”

Systems Biology in Nanosafety Research Conference

When? 9 – 10 November 2015

Where? Stockholm, Sweden

An international conference on systems biology in nanosafety research took place at

the Nobel Forum at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden on November 9-10,

2015, marking the third in a series of mini-conferences on nanotoxicology at the No-

bel Forum. The conference was chaired by Professor Bengt Fadeel of the EU funded

NANOSOLUTIONS project.

Systems biology, defined as the computational and mathematical modelling of complex bio-

logical systems, is increasingly being applied in the field of nanosafety research for observ-

ing and predicting the biological perturbations inflicted by exposure to engineered nano-

materials. The aim of this two-day meeting was to provide an overview of the state-of-the-

art of systems biology approaches in nanosafety research.

The conference was organised by Professor Bengt Fadeel with Professor Juha Kere within

the EU funded project FP7-NANOSOLUTIONS and in collaboration with the Working Group

on Systems Biology in the EU NanoSafety Cluster, and took place at the Nobel Forum,

which is part of the world renowned Karolinska Institutet.

The meeting was the third event in a series of miniconferences on nanotoxicology at the

Nobel Forum organised by Professor Bengt Fadeel, the first of which was organised in

2006 and the second in 2010 in the context of the FP7-NANOMMUNE project. The 2015

meeting was the first meeting to focus specifically on systems biology, a topic that is of cen-

tral importance for the FP7-NANOSOLUTIONS project. The project coordinator, Professor

Kai Savolainen (Finland), provided the introductory remarks.

6th NANoREG Consortium Meeting

When? 10 - 12 November 2015

Where? The Hague, Netherlands

The 6th NANoREG Consortium Meeting took place at the New Babylon Meeting Center in

The Hague - Netherlands. More than 150 representatives of Consortium Partners and rep-

resentatives of countries and organisations that collaborate with NANoREG attended the

event to discuss the success stories and forthcoming approaches within the project. The

meeting was subdivided into plenary sessions, thematic sessions, work package meetings,

task meetings and workshops.

After the success of the first Exploitation Strategy Seminar (ESS) which was held in Lisbon

this year, a second ESS training workshop was held on November 10th focusing mainly on

the planning stage where the results of the analysis phase (i.e.; identification of potential

stakeholders, identifying the main barriers for the industry, regulators and for the general

public to the implementation of NANoREG project results) are transcribed into a practical,

operational plan with the main objective of developing a commonly agreed strategy to ex-

ploit NANoREGs´s main outputs.

On November 11th the NANoREG Coordinator Tom van Teunenbroek opened the Consor-

tium meeting and gave an overview of "what is going on" under the umbrella of the

NANoREG project highlighting the progress of the project. Within a workshop fruitful dis-

cussions about the question and needs and foreseen answers from regulatory perspective

took place. This has been an excellent opportunity to get informed what scientific work has

been done to answer the regulatory questions.

Subsequently, participants had the chance to present latest scientific results by means of

posters. The posters invited all participants to inform themselves and discuss the state of

the art and to further discuss and exchange information on the presented topics with task

leaders.

Now that the scientific experimental work is almost completed and a significant quantity of

results has been produced, the priority for the final period of the project will be the concep-

tual part of the NANoREG project: the development of a framework that will integrate the

results of the project, the NANoREG Toolbox for legislators and the establishment of a data

logging and exchange system which enables a standardised data flow – more precisely – to

gain sufficiently detailed, comparable, and good quality information that can be used among

partner researchers to compare/exchange assay results.

The conference aimed to illustrate how Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) princi-

ples should guide the development of nanotechnologies, since societal demand for safe

and responsible innovations is rising. For this reason, innovations addressing societal chal-

lenges and needs where closely discussed.

BioNanoNet participated in Nano Diode’s workshop on the topic “Safe working: A straight-

forward precautionary approach for safe working with nanomaterials, with a focus on needs

of SMEs” and contributed an oral presentation about “Safety approach for companies work-

ing with nanomaterials”. Attending this workshop allowed an in-depth look to current

nanosafety strategies with high relevance for industrial dealing with nanomaterials.

MIOMI School Workshops

When? 2 December 2015

Where? Graz, Austria

On December 2nd, 2015 BioNanoNet performed two school workshops on the topic “Nano-

technology” as part of the Austrian education project MIOMI. Aim of the workshops was to

familiarize children at school age with figures and facts about nanotechnology and to pro-

vide information in a balanced way, covering benefits as well as possible risks. Therefore,

two local experts were invited to present their topic of research and to give pupils insight

into their ongoing nanotechnology related research activities.

The workshops, which took place at FH Joanneum Graz, also included hands-on activities.

Several experiments with the NanoSchoolBox® were performed, in order to impart

knowledge to pupils about practical applications of nanomaterials. A total number of 65

school children at the age of 12 to 14 years from NMS Jennersdorf and NMS Neuhaus am

Klausenbach participated in the workshop sessions. Pupils were very eager to learn more

about nanotechnology related issues and to carry out different instructed experiments.

NanoDiode Governance Workshop

When? 4 December 2015

Where? Graz, Austria

The workshop “Engaging Societal Stakeholders in Nanotechnologies and other Key Ena-

bling Technologies” brought together European Commission staff, partners of the EU-

project NanoDiode and invited experts to discuss opportunities for organising stakeholder

engagement as a central key to Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in nanotech-

nologies and other key enabling technologies. The workshop presented the findings from

NanoDiode and sought to find solutions to practical challenges in stakeholder engagement.

Within the discussion, four challenge areas were discussed:

1. The implementation odyssey: how to realise stakeholder engagement in the everyday practice of European research projects and programmes?

2. How to encourage project coordinators to engage stakeholders in their projects?

3. Engagement fatigue as a hurdle for stakeholder involvement: how to motivate CSOs and citizens to become involved in European research?

4. Focusing on societal challenges in a growth paradigm: how to realise a more responsive research and innovation system?

BioNanoNet participated in the workshop as one of the NanoDiode-project partners. Attend-

ing this workshop allowed an in-depth look to current engagement strategies. The strong

participation of European Commission staff and the intensive discussions made this event a

real success.

7th Meeting of the Austrian Nano Information Commission (NIK)

When? 4 December 2015

Where? Vienna, Austria

The primary impact area of the Austrian Nano Information Commission (NIK) is to inform

the consumers about the current state of knowledge with respect to relevant social aspects

of nanotechnology. Thus, the most important prerequisite for an unprejudiced society ad-

dressing the opportunities and risks of nanotechnologies and their consumer-related appli-

cations is an early and open communication.

Moreover, the Austrian Nano Information Commission functions as guidance for policy

makers and public authorities in order to advise on health-, safety- and environmental-risks

in relation to nanomaterials within Austria. The challenge for legislators is therefore to cre-

ate suitable conditions for the responsible use of nanotechnologies and the protection of

human health without restraining product innovation and economic development.

Relating to this challenge BioNanoNet gave a presentation on their NanoSafety activities

within diverse EU projects and introduced a new intelligent NanoSafety Assessment Ap-

proach including various risk testing strategies to the team of experts from agencies, institu-

tions and organizations in the fields of health, environment, science and research as well as

business and consumers protection within the NIK. The development of such an integrated

testing strategy and the exploitation of appropriate solutions may help to lower the barriers

for rapid commercialization, facilitate communication and dissemination of research to key

stakeholders beyond the research community, including industry and regulatory bodies,

policy makers and national decision makers.
