SOLID REACTION SCIENCE YEAR 4 - BY MR A. FINCA

OCTOBER 2008

PRIMARY-NEWS

They suggested and tried out ways they could get different solids back from the mixture with water. After a long discusión, the children tried out different apparatus and materials, eg muslin, paper to-wels, gauze bandage, blotting paper, fabrics, and described and explained what they did. We had a fab afternoon.

In Year 4 Science the children learnt that when solids do not dis-solve or react with the water they can be separated by filtering. In this experiment they chose apparatus to separate an undissolved solid from a liquid.

GENERAL NEWS FIRST AID by DOLORES SUGRUE

As part of our health

page I would like to

inform you about a

few aspects of general

health and safety in

our school.

The drinking water is

tested daily by Juan

Carlos a member of

the maintenance

staff .It is tested at 3

points within the

school for the level of

chlorine and the p.h.

of the water. The wa-

ter is also filtered be-

fore it is offered to the

pupils and staff to

drink. The catering

company Scolarest

also carry out their

own test.

We now also have 5

lunch time monitors to

assist the teachers on

duty in the dining hall.

This allows the teach-

ers more time to en-

sure that the pupils

are all eating a healthy

balanced diet at school

each day. From Janu-

ary onwards the moni-

tors will be asked to

rate the menu each

day using a simple

system. This will en-

able us to plan the

monthly menu more

efficiently, taking into

account which dishes

are more popular

amongst the pupils.

A choice of 4 salads

are available daily ,

one being a mixed

salad where Pepe our

chef will try to incorpo-

rate more oily fish such

as tuna, sardines or

mackerel. These fish

are rich in omega -3

which should be an es-

sential part of our diet.

Also in January a new

range of desserts will

be introduced, giving

the pupils more choice.

Every month during

the academic year

there is a menu com-

mittee meeting held at

9.15am. In the school.

The meetings are at-

tended by Mrs. Flax-

man, Miss Stark, a rep-

resentative of the cater-

ing company and myself

(school nurse). The

menu for the following

month is discussed and

planned.

We welcome parents to

join us at these meet-

ings and appreciate

your suggestions and

views when we are

planning the menu for

the coming months.

The menu committee

meeting will be held on

the following dates and

we look forward to par-

ents joining us to assist

in promoting a “Healthy

Eating School”.

GENERAL NEWS FIRST AID by DOLORES SUGRUE

Como parte de nuestra

página sobre la salud,

queremos informarles

sobre algunos aspectos

generales de la salud y

seguridad en nuestro

colegio.

Juan Carlos, del equipo

de mantenimiento, to-

agua en 3 puntos del

colegio para conocer los

niveles del Cloro y el

Ph. Además, el agua

es filtrada antes de

ofrecérsela a los alum-

compañía catering del

comedor, Scolarest,

también hace sus pro-

Actualmente tenemos 5

monitoras que ayudan

a los profesores duran-

te la hora del almuerzo

en el comedor. Esto

permite que ellos ten-

gan más tiempo para

asegurar que todos los

alumnos estén comien-

do una dieta sana y

equilibrada a diario. A

partir de enero, les pe-

diremos a las monitoras

que evalúen el menú

todos los días utilizando

un sencillo sistema,

lo cual nos permitirá

planificar el menú men-

sual más eficaz al tener

en cuenta los platos

más populares entre los

alumnos.

Se ofrece una selección

de 4 ensaladas a diario;

una de ellas es una

mixta donde nuestro

chef, Pepe, intenta in-

corporar más pescados

grasos, como el atún,

las sardinas o las caba-

llas. Estos pescados

son ricos en omega -3,

que debería formar una

parte esencial de nues-

tra dieta.

Además en enero,

habrá una nueva selec-

ción de postres, dándo-

les a los alumnos más

variedad.

Todos los meses del año

escolar se celebra una

reunión del comité de

menús a las 9:15 en el

colegio. A estas reunio-

nes asisten Mrs Flax-

man, Miss Stark, un re-

presentante de la com-

pañía de Scolarest y la

enfermera donde se es-

tudia y planifica el menú

del siguiente mes.

Invitamos a todos los

padres que vengan a es-

NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BY MS. HOAD

SECONDARY NEWS

On Thursday December 17th, Year 7 prepared

to bury a time capsule to be opened four years

from now; in December 2013. Miss Munoz and

myself gathered the students into one room,

which was a bit of a squash, but we managed

it. We asked them to write down their thoughts

about a number of things, including what they

hope the world would be like at the end of

2013. They also wrote about things they would

like to be able to remember when they are in

Year 11. Some students decided to bury a me-

mento from their pencil cases, while others in-

cluded secrets to be viewed by nobody but

themselves. We sealed up their thoughts and

souvenirs and put them into a sturdy box.

Unfortunately, it was rather muddy, but Borja

managed to dig a hole with the help of an enor-

mous shovel loaned by Juan Carlos and Peter.

When we were all satisfied that Borja had done a good job, Maria buried the time capsule while we

When we were all satisfied that Borja had done a

good job, Maria buried the time capsule while we

all thought about how life might change in the

next four years.

Then we all went back to class and carried on, just like a normal day. Now all we have to do is wait…and remember where we buried it!

The girls decided they should check the size of the hole.

SECONDARY NEWS TRIP TO MALAGA MUSEUM OF ART AND POPULAR COSTUMES

BY MS. UTE SCHROETER A full and interesting

This was a joint outing

between the Design

which included a visit

to the Museum of Art

and Popular Costumes

and to the splendid Bo-

tanical Gardens. We

had a full day’s pro-

with a visit to the mu-

several original pieces

of historical, everyday

objects. The museum

provided us with a fas-

Story continued from

The second part of the

day was a visit to the

Botanical gardens situ-

ated on the outskirts

of Malaga. Although a

chilly day, we had a

very informative tour

of the gardens, seeing

the tallest tree in

Malaga, all 50 metres

of it, as well as several

fascinating species

from around the world.

After a picnic lunch in

the gardens we

boarded the coach for
