From the Principal…
Dear Families,
We have a busy diary this week with lots happening around the school including:
Literacy Week celebrations
Book Week incursion (author, John Larkin) for Years 3 – 6
Chess Club
Book Week Parade
5/6 Hoop Time competition
Oxfam guitar performances
‘Bodyworks’ parent information evening
Threatened Species incursion – Year 5 & 6
Thank you to Tina, our Library Technician, for the continued celebration of
Children’s Book Week and a variety of associated activities. Our Book Week dress
up day will be celebrated this Thursday. This is always an exciting, colourful and
fun parade!
Although we enjoy a strong focus on numeracy and literacy every week, this week
we have been particularly focussed on aspects of literacy as we have celebrated
‘Literacy Week’. Activities have included target word competitions, cross age and
buddy reading, book dress up day, wear a ‘wow’ word to school day, show and
share book reviews and literacy board games. The culmination of our activities and
celebrations will be to come to school on Friday wearing ‘a touch of red’ to
demonstrate that we are ‘well read’!! Thank you to our literacy team for
promoting this week and providing such a variety of activities.
Landscaping Update
As advertised last week, we have exciting news - our landscaping project is about to
commence! I will attempt to keep everyone informed with regular updates and
progress reports on this project.
Site fencing was scheduled to be erected around the Prep playground and OSCH
club building on Monday morning. This has been delayed, and will now occur on
Thursday. This area will be out of use for the duration of the project (approx. 3
weeks) and there will be some changes to entry and exit provisions pertaining to
Abercrombie Street during the project. Student play areas will need to be
readdressed during this program, as will pedestrian traffic to and from our OSCH
building. Some short-term pain for long-term gain and benefits!
This project forms part of the Deepdene Primary School Landscaping Masterplan.
For an overview of the scope and breadth of work make sure you have viewed the
advertising boards now on display in Abercrombie Street and Burke Road.
Father’s Day Stall
Parents’ Association is organising a Fathers’ Day Stall for Friday, September 1st.
Students are invited to bring along $5.00 for the purchase of a special gift for
Fathers’ Day. Thank you to our Parent’s Association for again organising this annual
event. It is always well received and supported by the children. Choose something
great for Dad!! continued on page 2…

Level 3 and 4 Hoop Time
Last week on Thursday Deepdene sent three junior basketball teams to Nunawading Stadium to participate in the 2017 Hoop Time Tournament. All teams had been training very hard at lunch times leading up to the tournament and came into the event with great confidence. All teams played well with one of the All Star girl’s teams making it to the semi-finals. The All Star boy’s team had more of a challenge with a couple of vital players being away on the day, unfortunately there weren’t able to pull off a win but did come very close.
A huge thank you to the parents involved who gave up their time to coach, score and transport the students to and from the event. All in all it was a hectic, but great day of basketball!

“Sex, Drugs & Rock n’ Roll”
Managing those tricky questions &
awkward moments with your primary-aged child.
You are invited to join us for a presentation which aims to provide parents with practical, age-
appropriate strategies for dealing with the questions that our youngsters continue to ask about the
more intimate details of life.
This presentation which is of one hour’s duration including question time, will be held in the
Deepdene Primary School hall from 7 – 8pm on Thursday 24th of August.
The presenter, Marion Church, is a Health and Well Being educator, and creator and facilitator of
Bodyworks Primary Health Education,
With over 35 years of teaching and mentoring experience, working with children in primary and
secondary years, and their parents, Marion brings a wealth of knowledge, and down to earth
practical suggestions which may offer valuable guidance to parents, in a very relaxed, enjoyable
and informative manner.
“Children are naturally curious creatures. Every parent wants to be able to guide their child safely and
securely through the developing years. Yet every generation parents in a foreign landscape. Your
experiences as a child are not your children’s experiences, nor were they for previous generations
before yours. Change is ever present, and the speed of change is constantly increasing.
In the age of modern technology our access to information is immediate. The information available in
the areas of body awareness, puberty, emerging sexuality and relationships, may vary from being
educationally beneficial, intriguing, inappropriate or even, alarming.
Encourage your young children to come to you as their first source of information. Then take the
journey of enquiry together, with technology as a resource, not a replacement.”
The entrance fee of a $5 will be donated to Deepdene Primary School Library resources.

We enclose $5 registration fee.

On Wednesday 16th
August,
students from foundation to grades
2 had a fun session with Kym
Lardner as part of our Book Week
2017 celebration. He drew pictures,
sang and told stories to entertain the
students. His books include Arnold
the prickly bear, Grandpa’s horses,
The sad little monster, The dragon’s
lie and The naked penguin, which
he wrote together with his son,
Oliver.
On Wednesday 23rd
August, students
from grades 3 to 6 attended a session by
author John Larkin. John has written
over twenty-two books for children, teens
and adults. His books include Horse Girl,
Nostradamus and instant noodles and
others. He was very entertaining and had
the students in laughter with his stories.
Most of all, he engaged with the students
and provided them with strategies for
writing.
Happy Reading! Tina
