I do hope you are all ok. Our Easter is so different this year. In fact, our whole world is different. Not sure about you but I have been quietly reminiscing and one thing I have been thinking of is that if my daughter Catherine was still alive I know this virus would have taken her and she would have died alone. Four years ago when she left us she was in our arms.

I guess at times like this you do think about your life and appreciate what you have. We would like a perfect world but I am yet to find it. What about you?

Message from the CEO

JOKE 1 Q: What do you get if

you cross a parrot with a centipede?

A: A Walkie-talkie

“Never Too Late” It is difficult when I let you know of the passing of a resident, but at just four years old it is more difficult to tell you about the passing of our friend Elliott Miles Preston who was diagnosed with a rare form of Brain Cancer. Strong and determined as he was, Elliott peacefully passed away on 12th March, 2020. Elliott’s dad, Luke Preston is a writer and has written a movie called “Never Too Late”. The film is a comedy about a group of seniors who attempt to break out of a nursing home and has many well-known actors. There is Norma and Jack. Jacki Weaver based on “Norma” (a resident inspired by Luke’s Nan, Norma who suffered from Dementia). James Cromwell’s character, Jack is based on Elliott’s grandfather who he called “Grumpy”. A character in the film named Bronson was named after Norma’s pet cat, Bronson in real life. Also starring are Dennis Waterman and Shane Jacobson. Other characters in the film include “Elliott” and people Luke knew in his life. There is a lovely dedication to Elliott at the end of the film and the trailer is now available on YouTube. The trailer looks very funny and I cannot wait to show the film to our residents. Never Too Late was due to be released 23rd, April, 2020 but with Coronavirus restrictions it has been postponed. Once restrictions are lifted the film will get a new release date so keep an eye out. My love and support goes to Julie, Luke, Shari and their family.

Green Thumb!

Our friend, Eunice visited us many times in the beginning of 2020 to share veggies from her garden. Judging from the size of this Zucchini we are certain she has a natural green thumb.

Thanks for the memories The hours, months and years our volunteers have endured selling goods at Dot’s Opportunity shop feels as though it has lasted a lifetime. The funds helped build Dorothy Impey Home on Cumberland Road (home to 36 residents) and now Dorothy Impey Home on O’Hea Street (home to 92). With the retail industry affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the economy in a fragile state, I have come to the difficult decision to close our Op Shop. After 36 years this has not been an easy decision, but I feel it has been the right one. Words cannot express my appreciation for our volunteers over the decades who have helped us through everything. You have left me with some wonderful memories to look back on - Thank You.

More Supplies! We received a box of face masks to protect our staff. Here I am below with the box of masks that were donated by AuExpress Global and Catalyst through LASA and Sara modelling one of the face shields I ordered for staff. Pictured right, is Leigh who brought us some toilet paper. I think we are now covered from head to toe in all of the essentials to get us through 2020. Thank you to our supporters who are helping to ensure we are OK.

Happy Nurses Day! This 12th May it will be 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing. Where would we all be without the wonderful care our nurses provide? Thank you!

Cold and Flu Season With everything that has been going on we have been informed that as of the 1st of May staff, families, contractors and anyone else who visits Dorothy Impey Home must show evidence that they have received the Flu Vax otherwise that will not be allowed to visit. So please make sure you are covered as we will be checking.

Farewell, Elva Romain and his family spent some time in our memories garden to farewell his wife, Elva. With Darren’s help he was able to remember Elva in a very special way.

Perhaps this year the general Cold & Flu season will not be as bad whilst the world combats Coronavirus. I hope so.

Fundraising Gwen has been keeping busy making baskets for us to sell. So when we are able to fundraise properly again we will fundraise like never before. Thank you, Gwen.

Fancy Dress Who ever said life was boring? Margaret knows how to take the bins out in true Victorian style.

The Brady Bunch Boy, how times are changing already. What do you think of our attempt at recreating the Brady Bunch (pictured, below) ? This was our first ever Board Meeting done via Zoom (video conferencing). The meeting surprisingly went very well with no teething problems. I must admit I had to control my laughter as everyone looked quite funny on the big screen, but I did very well. Heather G, Jacques and Heather D both really enjoyed the meeting and throught it went very well. This might be the way of the future, especially with the colder weather fast approaching!

50 Years soon approaches Next week we celebrate 49 years since Dorothy Impey Home opened. That means next year is the big 5-0 ! We will be celebrating big so stay tuned!

Vegie Garden Surprise! The kitchen staff were thrilled to bits to have harvested Watermelon and Cantaloupe fresh from the DIH garden. Below is Sarah showing them off before preparing them for our residents to enjoy. I think Eunice now has some competition in the vegie garden department. I wonder what everyone else is growing at the moment.

Face Mask Mountain Here are some more of the handmade masks we have received from lovely crafty people. I absolutely love the designs, especially the two butterfly masks. People can be so thoughtful and creative.

School Visit Memory Prior to all the Coronavirus restrictions here is a photo from when the students from St Oliver Plunkett Primary School visited our residents. Our residents miss the student visits and it will be good when they are allowed to visit again.
