From The Principal’s Office students to develop their hockey skills and develop their capacity to play as part of a team. Well Done to all students involved. Parent Opinion Survey 44 randomly selected families have been invited to respond to this year’s Parent Opinion Survey. Schools are expected to return all surveys to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. It would be great to have 100% participation for 2013. If your family has received a survey please help us by sending completed surveys to school by Friday August 2. Super Bee Postcard Competition Last term students were invited to design the

next Super 'B' postcard. Congratulations to Lilly

Carrison and Matty Poels who won this competition. Your designs as well as the quality of your entry was exemplary. Students were encouraged to capture the meaning of our 4 B’s – Be a Learner, Be Safe, Be Kind and Be Respectful. Active After School Communities (AASC) Term 3 programs- continuing this week!! Students in years 2-6 have the chance to play cricket on Tuesday afternoon with a member of the Jindivick Cricket club, Megan Metcalfe. On Wednesday afternoons, students in years Prep-2 can join Jen Cunneen for lots of Dancing fun. Both programs are held at school starting at 3.15pm and finishing at 4.15pm. Students get a piece of fruit and are encouraged to bring along their own drink bottle with water. This program is funded by the Federal Government and targeted to Primary School aged children to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Links to local sporting clubs are encouraged. Parents interested in their child/children participating in the program for term 3 are welcome to let Ann know in the office. We have vacancies in both programs.

Drouin West will be celebrating National Literacy and Numeracy Week with our school families tonight starting promptly at 7.00 and going to 8.00pm. All school families as well as our new prospective families have been invited to join us on a Family Maths Night. Family Maths Night provides an opportunity for families to experience a variety of “hands on” math activities and games, many of which can be played at home. Great family prizes will be drawn on the night for some lucky families who experience different activities in at least three classrooms and have their passports stamped. Great Gippsland Gatescape Competition How exciting to learn this week that Drouin West Primary School won the best school gate in the Gippsland Gatescape competition. The judges commented on the fact that our gate was colourful, vibrant, well designed, and involved a great deal of thought and effort. Congratulations to all those individuals who contributed to creating our gate! You have every reason to be very proud of your combined efforts. Given that our gate is protected from the elements it will remain a lovely entry point for visitors to our school. Parents who have not come in to see the gate are encouraged to do this when they have the opportunity. Let’s Celebrate! Students involved in the hockey team played in the Gippsland competition last Thursday. It was exciting that they won their game and will be competing in the Statewide competition later in the year. The extra practice at lunchtimes and through Active After School programs as well as students involvement in local hockey clubs enables

Asthma tips for Parents and Carers this Winter Winter can be a hard time for people with asthma as could weather, coughs, colds and the

flu can bring on more symptoms and attacks.

The common cold is caused by a virus and it is important to try not to cough and

sneeze near other people, and to wash hands properly to prevent passing on the infection. The flu is different to the common cold and can be a much more serious viral infection.

People with asthma are recommended to have an annual influenza vaccination (the

flu shot). Preventing the flu protects people with asthma, as those with asthma are often

unwell for longer and have a much harder time recovering from the flu. Make sure your child’s asthma is well-controlled; this will help them to bounce back quicker from a

cough or cold and will help prevent asthma attacks when they are unwell.

Some medications and herbal remedies that we use for colds and flu can make asthma worse. Speak

to your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns you may have.

Antibiotics are not normally prescribed for the common cold, or influenza, as these medications will

not help a cold get better. Effective medications may include paracetamol and decongestants; however seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before purchasing them for your child.

Suggested remedies for the flu and the common cold are: rest, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of

water, staying away from cigarette smoke, using steam inhalation, gargling with salty water for a sore throat and seeking medical advice if concerned at any time.

For more information on the common cold, medications and references used in this article please see the
