That is a pretty daunting number - considering the club started out in the garage of Carol Johns in 1978 - making various flowers, "critters", and gluing shells on about any objects that needed shell decoration! In circa 1980, the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce called Carol and asked if she would officially start the Marco Island Shell Club! The first "2 day shell show" was held at St. John's Episcopal Church - a "few" card tables were set-up with displays! The rest is history! Our 2014 juried Shell Show had 174 Scientific and Artistic Exhibits from Novice to Professional - from all over the world, an amazing Shell Art Gift Shop, a "Live Mollusk(shell) Tank, Raffle Items, Local Shells for sale, People's Choice Awards, 19 Trophies and numerous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons given out by our fantastic judges - and more!..and so it is today, the Marco Island Shell Club with 160 members strong and one of the most well-founded non-profit organizations in the State of Florida! CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST CONTEST We're having a contest to help kick off this year's show! It doesn't matter whether you are a Newcomer or an Old-timer in the shell-collecting world! Here on Marco Island, there are so many unique local shells right on our beaches! This will be like a treasure hunt! They both have a big spot in the "heart" of Marco Island Shell Club History! We are asking the community - whether you are a MISC member or not - to go shell collecting and bring us back these finds! Here are some examples of choices that you have! We will have some beautiful prizes for the winners - and a presentation on the last day of the show(Saturday - 1:00 PM)! The MISC Logo is the Right-Handed Whelk. The Right-handed whelk is an "anomaly"( a deviation of the norm) - because the aperture is normally on the left when you find it! It is a rare occasion to find it on the right! Another choice is to find an Alphabet Cone with the number 3 on one and 5 on the other - or both on one shell! As many of you already know, the Alphabet Cones are just that - they have letters of the alphabet and numbers all over them! Once you discover a number or a letter - you will be addicted! It will become one of your favorite shells - some even have short words on them! This is to signify our 35th Annual Shell Show! Jae Kellogg - Shell Show Chair

2015 SHELL SHOW

35 Years of Shell Show! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Again, my president’s message will be succinct.

As our finale for this year approaches, I want to thank our members who have contributed so much. When I walk around workshop, I see everyone creating “masterpieces”. Our storerooms are filled with the lovely items and I can’t wait to see them displayed at the show.

I also want to wholeheartedly thank the Board of Directors. They are a terrific group of people who have great ideas and a strong vision for the Shell Club. Their support and hard work have made my presidency a most enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Shell Show 35-here we come!

Marsha Prunetti - President

WORKSHOP Tuesday workshops are busy with all tables full to overflowing with Shell Club members creating beautiful shell art for the soon to be 35th Annual Marco Island Shell Club Shell Show. The Gift Shop will be spectacular this year with old favorites and beautiful new creations. At each workshop we are amazed by the creativity of our members. It is hard to imagine that those shells

picked up on the beach can turn into something extraordinarily beautiful. With so many creative shell artists in the Shell Club the artistic entries in the Shell Show should be amazing. Be sure to check out the artistic entries at the Shell Show. Also be thinking of a project you might enter in next year’s show. It's never too early to get started and you might get some ideas at the Show this year. New ideas for projects are always welcome so be sure to bring your ideas to the attention of the table leaders. We need new and different ideas for shell art creations each year. Come join us to learn something, do something, or teach us something. A huge thank you to table leaders who suggest projects, provide materials, provide support and guidance for Club Members as they complete their projects. Also a huge thank you to Club Members who spend Tuesday mornings working to create beautiful shell art. It is a good, warm feeling to enjoy the company of others who are all working toward a common goal. Hope to see you complete this season of workshops and look forward to seeing you next year as you arrive at our beautiful latitude.

Becky Miller/Debbie Towey – Workshop Chair

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

On February 10, Kelly Ussia, the recipient of the FGCU $1,200 undergraduate tuition scholarship, visited the shell club workshop. Her purpose - to personally thank the club and especially those who work so hard to raise the funds for her scholarship! This is the third year she has received the award which is determined through a blind judging process by the club’s committee. The award has enabled this honors student, who is totally self-supporting, to carry a heavier course load while working only two jobs,

instead of three.

When we met Kelly at the FGCU President’s Scholarship Luncheon in November, she said she wanted to personally express her appreciation to the club for its generosity, so we worked with her in finding a suitable date. Having gotten permission from her internship supervisor at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, she was able to spend some time visiting the Tuesday workshop tables, talking with members, and also gathering some ideas to incorporate into her own environmental education programs.

Kelly’s desire is to work with young children in environmental education. She has already begun to do this on a part-time basis but aspires to make it a full-time commitment.

It was a pleasure to have her visit, if only for a short time on a busy Tuesday morning. She is quite focused and very intentional in everything she does!

FGCU graduate students, Matt Gamel and Katrina Knack, are busy preparing to share their research findings at the Thank You dinner on March 25. Each of them received a $2,000 competitive research grant. Katrina is doing seagrass research, while Matt is keeping us in suspense until March 25, when he reveals his project and its results!

So, we hope you will attend the Thank You Dinner when we learn more about their project.

Elizabeth Salewski, who received a $5,000 research scholarship to support her doctoral research at the University of South Florida, is drawing her research to a conclusion in preparation for writing her dissertation.

Honored to work on your behalf in fostering environmental and marine education, and research, we are your Scholarship & Grant Committee —- Martha Bennett, Paulette and Bruce Carabelli, Joan Robbins, and Carolyn Ginther, Chairperson

Carolyn Ginther – Scholarship Chair

SEMINARS

March 5th - Ann Dupont, a Scientific Diver and Underwater Photographer and co-author of the book Caribbean Sea Slugs, will give her presentation of Sea Shells and Slugs found in Lake Worth Lagoon showing the diversity and uniqueness of the underwater marine life found in the Lagoon.  The Lake Worth Lagoon is recognized as one of

Florida’s most important estuarine  lagoon systems and supports a rich and diverse molluscan fauna.      Anne DuPont is a volunteer with the Florida Natural History Museum and is a Regular-Service volunteer with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute. She is a Museum Associate in Malacology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Her photos have been published in numerous books, magazines, and educational DVDs. She has been diving in the Lagoon for over 20 years, and is very knowledgeable on underwater life found in the Lagoon.   Anne is retired from IBM. She and her husband live in Delray Beach, Florida. PUBLICITY

Within a few days I will have some “Store Window” posters and “Condo Board” cards to be distributed around the island to promote the upcoming 35th Annual Shell Show. Please assist in passing these out to your favorite stores/restaurants, etc and post the smaller ones on your Condo or apartment bulletin board. The more we get the word out, the better the show attendance will be and the more money we will have to fund our scholarships.

. Please give Mary Ann Coke a special note of thanks for the pictures from the Fossil dig with Dr. Gary Schmelz. I understand, as usual, it was a great trip.
