Inside this Issue
Dear Parents
New Year greetings from all Hildans! Hope that you have a good start to 2016.
I appreciate many of you for taking time to attend our Meet-the-Parents sessions held over the last two Friday evenings. The school believes in leverag-ing on the strong partnership in education among teachers, students, parents and commu-nities. As stakeholders, we thank you for holding the same beliefs as the school to cham-pion the same cause in pro-moting holistic development of our Hildans.
In a recent article in Today’s paper on “Mindset change needed for holistic learning to succeed” (25 Jan), I also echo the same sentiment as the writer. Our education land-scape has evolved and teach-ers are to play the role of advo-cate and facilitator of non-academic pursuits in the arts, music and sports by encourag-ing our students to take part.
Parents’ expectations for their children are to include excel-ling in CCAs and contributing to the community. Having chil-dren attaining perfect scores but neglecting social skills and values would be doing a dis-service to our children.
Term 1/ 2016
As a school, our push for holis-tic development of each Hildan is through the introduction of our Hildan Distinctive Pro-grammes incorporating Ap-plied Learning , Learning for Life, ICT /Cyberwellness and Values in Action (VIA). We will continue to strengthen our pro-grammes to provide wider ex-posure and opportunities for Hildans to discover and build on their interests and talents in a range of areas and develop important life skills from a young age.
Therefore, we will work on re-ducing excessive focus on ac-ademic results so that learning is more enjoyable and stu-dents have more time and space to pursue a broader range of interests, sustain their curiosity, cultivate an innova-tive spirit and pursue a well-rounded education.
All students’ achievements be it academic or non-academic will be recog-nized.
I hope that with synergy in the mindsets of all our key stakeholders we will be able to attain our goal of holistic education.
Let us together uphold the legacy of Graham White, our founder to ensure that his legacy of SHPS provid-ing a balanced development of body, mind and spirit for our students lives on through our future genera-tions of Hildans.
