Karen Gloeggler – Lacking Sense & Sensibility: The Adventure of Writing “Jane Austin Quilts Inspired by her NovelsPlease join your fellow quilters for a unique presentation by Las Vegas based quilter, Karen Gloeggler. A dynamic and caring quilt instructor, Karen has spent the last 20 years working in the garment industry as a Technical Designer. Karen finished her first quilt when her son was born, and hasn’t stopped quilting since. Karen appeared on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims and on Quilting Arts TV. She loves quilting and began quite an adventure when she searched for inspiration to design a quilt for her niece and accidentally discovered that Jane Austen made a quilt. Who knew? What followed is an adventure that took her to Jane Austen’s House Museum in England to see the quilt in person. Karen wrote “Jane Austen Quilts Inspired by Her Novels” to allow other quilters to make their own Jane Austen-inspired quilt. She will bring her story and her quilts to at the GQG General Meeting on Wednesday, September 13th. We hope that you will attend. Communication – How important is it for our Show? Our show chairs and team are working hard to publicize our show to attract attendees, but the most effective person to get the word out is you! If you use Facebook, Nextdoor.com* or any other social media, post a picture of the Benjamin Franklin Quilt (email me or Sandy for the picture), and possibly a picture of part or all of one of your quilts to entice them to see the rest. If posting on Facebook, make sure the post is “public” so others can post it to their friends.

At our show we will have gorgeous quilts, including Luke Haynes’ Benjamin Franklin quilt, Mike MacNamara quilts, quilts from Men Who Quilt, plus opportunities to win baskets, a treadle sewing machine, great door prizes, and shopper’s reward baskets, etc... But most important, YOUR QUILT(s) will be on display! Your family and friends will love to see YOUR creation(s)! This is the time to share your success of having a quilt displayed at the Pasadena Convention Center. Let those who know you either through work, church, knitting groups or other volunteer groups participate in something that makes you happy. And who knows, they might walk away with a fabulous opportunity basket or sewing machine. If you have friends or acquaintances in other guilds, let them know about our boutique with fabric for $2.00 a pound—that’ll grab their attention! Send an email, call them up or even send them a show postcard with a personal “I’d love to see you at our show” message. You, the fabulous Show Team, and everyone in the guild have invested a lot of time and effort to make our show a success. We want everyone possible to attend and enjoy. It only takes a few minutes to share, promote or invite. So communicate and spread the word now! Let’s do it! Thank you to everyone who brought baskets, sewing notions, and other items for us to use for opportunity baskets for our meetings and our show. *Nextdoor.com is a free, private social network for you, your local neighbors and your community. Email Tina for a write up and instructions how to post an event on Nextdoor. Happy Quilting, Colleen Shier

By the time you read this, it will be 3 weeks until Showtime! Some reminders to keep handy: • Quilt Intake is on Wednesday, September 20th from 4 to 7 pm at the Women’s Athletic Club,

located at 600 S. Verdugo Road, Glendale. Please bring your quilts, with tags attached to the back on the left bottom corner. Cover any identifying labels with blue tape or a sewn on cover. Take time to make sure your quilts are free of odor and pet hair - it could prevent your quilt from being accepted and contaminating other quilts.

• If your quilt is part of an exhibit for the show, please bring it to Quilt Intake, unless you have made other arrangements for drop off with Sandy Bradfield. Exhibit quilts also require the same restrictions as any other quilt: free of odor and pet hair and with their tag in place to identify their hanging group. Exhibit quilts do not need to have identifying labels covered.

• Coordinate report times with your Show Chairs for Set-up Day! A lot needs to happen in the Conference Center before individual areas will become accessible. The decorator has primary control of the building until 2pm, as they create the “bones” of the show. Vendors will begin move in downstairs at 2pm. By verifying your report time, you’ll be more efficient with your time and prevent standing around waiting.

• Report promptly for your volunteer positions. Confirm report times before the date and respect other volunteer commitments. Many of you volunteered for more than one shift and need to move to another location when a shift is complete. Please check with the area Chair to verify specific needs when reporting for duty.

• Class sales will continue as long as seats are available. Don’t forget: Handi Quilter classes daily, Andi Perejda’s & Christa Watson’s classes daily, and Superior’s Thread Therapy class on Saturday afternoon.

• Bring your quilts for appraisal by the Quilt Ninja. She has given us a special discount for appraisals performed during the show. Insurance appraisals are also available at a discount.

• One last request: After you have seen the show and worked your volunteer hours, take a minute to check with your fellow members who are still working. Ask if they could use a quick restroom break or need something to drink or eat. Many of us will have been working since opening and your consideration could be the thing that helps us continue through until closing time at 6pm.

This show will be awesome! The building will scream quilts when over 300 quilts are hanging. All the exhibits are upstairs and the quilt show downstairs. Don’t miss our Featured Artist Exhibit. Luke Haynes’ quilts fill an entire room with examples of his fascinating work. Plus: the Boutique upstairs, the huge Vendor Mall downstairs. Raffles galore - including the Opportunity Quilt, an Antique Singer Treadle Machine, gift baskets, Shopper’s Rewards, and much, much more will be waiting to entice you. Spread the word! Remember, this is YOUR show. Let’s show the world that through experience gained from 37 years of practice, the Glendale Quilt Guild puts on a spectacular show. Invite everyone you know. The more, the merrier! Your Show Chairs, Sandy, Beth & Tina

Mac Was Back Comments following Mike MacNamara’s two day class this past July include: •Awesome •Unparalleled fun •Accessed inner creativity •Learned to think out of the box, and •Just go for it! Chris Mc Donald, who intended to take only the first day because of her long drive from Simi Valley where she is her guild’s President, had such a great time that she drove back for the second day. Chris, also, stated that our Guild Members were “So welcoming.” Denise Koch enjoyed the class experience enough to want to make a complete a quilt (lap size). If you attended the class and would like a copy of the notes that Susan Edwards took, please let her know. Susan will type them up after the GQG Show.

Loving Hands Activities At the August guild meeting, 39 (!) pieced quilt tops were turned in by Margaret McNeal and another four by Cathy McNassor. Twelve finished quilts were turned in, completed by Lisa Burroughs (using fabric that belonged to Esther Norbut), Crystal Dudley, Cathy Euler, new member Joyce Li and Annie Raycraft. And six flannel receiving blankets were turned in by Violet Bos, Joliene Blanchard and Sue Graham. Remember that Loving Hands now meets the third Friday of the month. So in September, the regular work session will be on Friday, September 15th at the WAC. We hope to see you on the 15st!

Currently we have 156 members and six Affiliate members. Sixty members attended the August 9th meeting. 2017-2018 renewals continue. Thank you to all who have already renewed your memberships. We are happy you continue as valued members of the Guild. We have sent out reminder letters to members who have not yet renewed. (Membership renewal forms are available on our website and at the membership table.) The due date for renewals has been extended to September 15, 2017. From the membership lists at that time Tim Spinn will create our new roster. Many thanks to Tim. Membership cards were given out at the August meeting. If you didn’t get yours, see us at the September meeting. We appreciate the badges (little miniature quilt blocks with a place for the name) you make for guests and new members. These are such a special welcome. Patterns are available at the membership desk. In conclusion, we want to remind you to wear your membership badges so we can all greet you by name. Ice Dyeing with Nick and Chase: Dragonfly Dyeworks

7

A crowd of ice dyers gathered at WAC the Monday after Nick and Chase’s class. Their excitement was palpable. They had not come to Monday Sew to sew; they came to show off their beautiful creations. Having taken two previous classes on fabric painting from well know quilters and not having much success, I was amazed at the fabulous results everyone had and how easy the process was that Nick and Chase showed us. I was impressed with Nick and Chase’s excellent teaching, their generosity, and that they handed out evaluation sheets at the end of class so that “they could improve!” The kit fee for their class included unlimited amounts of top quality, expensive, powdered dyes; chemicals to prepare our own fabrics and tee shirts; Synthropol (an industrial strength detergent); and 30 pounds of ice per person. Nick was so accommodating that he even drove his van to pick up the ice for me. A class act, in my opinion. (by Susan Edwards)

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING REPORT Minutes of the Executive Board of the Glendale Quilt Guild

August 3, 2017

I. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. at the Glendale Women’s Athletic Club and a quorum was present. Present: Colleen Shier, President; Sharon Bishop, Recording Secretary; Donna Ryan, Parliamentarian; Cindy Abrams and An Burgess, Programs; Susan Edwards, Workshops; Karen Millman and Pat Golditch, membership; Elke Miyahara, Newsletter; Beth Hasenauer, 2017 Fund Raising; Tina Curran, Loving Hands; Kathi Wilson and Craig Coleman 2018 Fund Raising and Sandy Bradfield, Advisor. II. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as printed in the Newsletter. III. BOARD REPORTS Treasurer/Shier: The Treasurer’s Report for July was presented. Programs/Abrams: Upcoming programs are set. Plans are made for the Quilting Bee and Picnic to be held August 31 from 9 am to 9 pm and will focus on quilting previously sandwiched quilt tops. Workshops/Edwards: The recent workshop with Mike McNamara was lots of fun, there were even a couple of non-members attending, one of whom came for both days. In an effort to encourage more sign-ups by non-members a motion was made by Susan Edwards to drop the price of workshops for non-members to $40. The motion failed. Membership/Millman: Renewal letters were sent out to members and affiliates to remind them of the need to renew their memberships. Officers needing the title bars for their membership pins are asked to contact membership. Newsletter/Miyahara: This month’s newsletter went smoothly. Fund Raising 2017/Bradfield: Currently there are 148 member quilts for the show. There are four ribbon sponsorships remaining. A new exhibit, in celebration of the work of GQG Master Quilter Lois Stelzer, was announced. Everything is falling into place. The committee recently visited the venue to finalize the layout. Members are encouraged to contact Kathy Fogel to volunteer to work the show. Fund Raising 2018/Wilson: The 2018 Opportunity Quilt will be ready in time for the upcoming Quilt Show. A suggestion was made that for every $20 in Opportunity Quilt tickets sold, there be a gift to choose from. The suggestion for the 2018 Fund Raising Event was outlined. It will be called “Under the Big Top” and be a tour of members’ homes and sewing spaces starting in the morning and culminating at a central location with lunches, opportunity baskets and the sale of quilts. Box lunches were suggested. The committee is currently looking for a location with a possible date early in October 2018. Their goal is to have the information available at the Ripple Effect Show in September. Loving Hands/Curran: We received more fabric from Candy’s. The next Loving Hands date is August 18 when we will be preparing more tops to be quilted at the Quilting Bee and Picnic. Email Blast/Shier: Please get any flyers or information for the Email Blast to Colleen in time to be included in the blast. Donations Committee/Shier: Colleen will be going to storage on Friday to sort donated fabric. Additional donations were brought to WAC the day of the last Workshop and donated to the attendees who then selected from the donated fabrics and in turn donated money to the Guild for those fabrics. Notions were accepted for use by the Guild. IV. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Donations Committee/Shier: Colleen Shier made a motion to rescind the moratorium on accepting private-party donations effective immediately. The motion passed. V. NEW BUSINESS 1. A letter was received from the First Congregational Church informing us that our facility rental contract with the Church will not be renewed after December 31, 2017 because the church property is currently in negotiations for the sale of the property, however they have assured us our contract will be honored thru December 31. We will need to explore other rental locations ASAP. 2. A proposed Guild calendar for 2019 was presented for information taking holidays into consideration. 3. Programs Co Chair Abrams suggested having another Taco Tuesday event on October 24, 2017 from 5 to 9 at WAC since the one we had last year was so successful. Everyone was in agreement and looking forward to the event. 4. Quilt Show 2019 - President Shier brought up the fact that the 2019 Quilt Show plans need to be considered after a thorough evaluation of the upcoming quilt show as well as the last quilt show in 2015 as previously agreed to by the Executive Board. VI. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Sharon Bishop, Recording Secretary

Most of the morning slots have been filled, so most of the remaining positions are for the afternoons. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up ASAP by contacting Kathy Fogel by phone at 818-330-9372 or by email at [email protected]. There will be one last opportunity at the September Guild Meeting, after which Kathy will be contacting those members who haven’t signed up yet. Remember that in order to remain a Member in Good Standing, two hours volunteer work for the show are required. Thanks in advance for your help – we can’t do this without you!

A Reminder to All Volunteers: The venue is very cold and sweaters and/or shawls might be necessary during your shift. The Convention Center Parking Entrance is on South Eulid Avenue, which is a right turn from Green Street when you are heading east. Cheaper parking is available at the Paseo across the street from our building with validation from a Paseo vendor.

Sign up for Workshops at the General Meeting or: 1. Contact the Workshop Chair: Susan Edwards at [email protected] 2. Sign up online 24-7 at www.bookwhen.com/GQGregister There is no processing fee to sign up online. Supply list and photo are available to download. All classes are held at the WAC.

Challenge Quilts: It’s getting close! We have been excited by the Quilt Entry Forms already turned in, and are looking forward to seeing many more! Entry forms can be turned in as late as the intake date with the quilt, but we are strongly encouraging you to turn them in early. Be sure to include your 50 word “Artist Statement” - we will be hanging those statements so that people can see the inspiration for the quilt!

The Boutique at the Show We are counting down days until the show, so this is a friendly reminder to keep making wonderful items for the Boutique. With all of the fall & winter holidays just around the corner it is a perfect time to sell Halloween, Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah goodies. Questions: just contact Kathi Wilson at [email protected] or 818 422-8798.
