Just as fall begins, we begin our new year for the kids! Or, do we just continue the previous year? I rather like the idea of continuing our Optimist year! The kids are what we are about and let's face it; they just keep growing physically and mentally. Also, President Ken is not focused on just this year; his focus is on the next five years. As fall has begun, I have been busy doing installations with several clubs. I am thrilled to say, we have a very strong district that we should be very proud of. I think however, when I look at our history, I saw an even stronger district. I am anxious to see this district get back to where it once was. So help me to "Chart A Course" for Indiana South District that gets us back to where we were, once before.

DON’T FORGET!

A message from Mike, your 2014-2015 Indiana South District Governor

Welcome to the 2014 - 2015 Optimist year.

As we kicked off our new year, I am pleased to report we are off to a great start. We have several new clubs in works. We have lost a few members, but gained even more. But, let's not give up now, the kids need us! Remember, there is a child born every 7 seconds in the United States.

At our first quarter conference, we are planning to look at growth with new club building, new members and also very important is member retention! This is the first element to get us back to where we were once before. Also, to help get us back, we are providing free

Message from the First LadyBoth Ken and I feel blessed and honored to have this opportunity to serve with you in Bringing out the BEST in our Kids, ourselves and our communities.  Our personal goal for this year is to become healthier physically, mentally and spiritually than we are today - to be the BEST we can be in every aspect of our lives.

We encourage you to join us on this journey so that we can grow as individuals, Clubs and as an organization. Improving our health and the health of our Clubs will help us serve more children and ensure a lasting legacy of Optimism.

The start of a new year is a great time to give yourself and your Club a health check-up. Take time to consider the following questions:

Are there areas in your life that need a boost? Does your physical well-being need a lift? Are the projects conducted by your Optimist Club helping kids in your community

get up and get moving?

Stay tuned to future issues of The Optimist magazine and The Hotline newsletter for more details. Follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page for updates and tips.

Yours in Optimism, Patsy Garner

Little known facts about BOUNCE

Little known facts about BOUNCE sounds like miracle stuff to me. And I know you are saying, "Does it really work?"

*BOUNCE...the stuff you use in your dryer: *Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

*Eliminates static electricity from your television screen. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

*Dissolves soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a used sheet of Bounce.

*Freshens the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang one in the closet.

*Prevents thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce to eliminate the static cling on the thread before sewing.

"A smile is the lighting system of the face, the cooling system of the head and the heating system of the heart."

Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly. When they lit a fire in the craft it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, was known as the lesser of two weevils.

A three-legged dog walked into a saloon in the Old West. He slid up to the bar and announced "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw."

Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused his dentist's Novocain during root canal work? He wanted to transcend dental medication. A man entered his local paper's pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

A woman had twins, and gave them up for adoption. One of them went to a family in Egypt and was named Amahl. The other went to a family in Spain; they named him Juan. Years later, Juan sent a picture of himself to his mother. Upon receiving the picture, she told her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amahl. Her husband responded, "But they are twins--if you've seen Juan, you've seen Amahl."

Optimist International Foundation (Helping Optimists Help Kids)

2014 will be a banner year for Indiana South Clubs and the Optimist Foundation. It will, because we all realize what great importance the Foundation is to our Clubs and the Children we serve. The Oratorical contests and Essay contests topics have been announced. Did you know that District winners of these 2 Optimist International contests are awarded scholarships which come from the International Foundation? Did you know that monies contributed by you, the Optimist Members, provide the funding for these special scholarships?

If you remember, there is a partnership between Optimist International and the Optimist International Foundation. Both organizations support each other. The Foundation is the fundraising arm of Optimist International, and works to develop funds to support the endeavors of Optimist International and its mission. Each quarter, several Indiana South District Optimist Clubs and individual members step up to the plate and provide gifts to the Foundation, which in turn, supports Optimist International and themselves as a club. This may sound like old hat; however, I cannot state it more clearly.

The Optimist International Foundation needs gifts from you, the membership and your Clubs.Dime-A-Day, President’s Club, Century Circle, Christian D. Larson Partners, and Club ‘365’ donations are just a few of the ways that you can become part of the movement of “Helping Optimists Help Kids”.

Don’t forget that we will have the Foundation Auction at the District Convention in Evansville. So start collecting your ‘auctions items’ NOW.

Please be part of this great district in supporting the Optimist International Foundation.

David Kirkman, District Foundation Rep

These one-day training events will be held throughout North America starting in February.  Check out the entire schedule and register online by clicking here.

*-- I'm Not Repeating Myself --*The Committee for the Reduction of Redundancy and the Antiproliferation of Repetition has decided not to meet until they have their first meeting and thus will not be meeting until the first time.

Their Pre-meeting Statement wanted to make this clear before they had their first meeting, so that it would not be confusing.

So their first meeting will actually be their first meeting and they will not have a meeting before the first meeting.

This should avoid having people show up for their first meeting before it is held, since to do so would be confusing to those who did so and this is what they want to avoid by reducing the confusion and lessening the repetition.
