Year 1 Bugs Education Incursion Our Year 1 students enjoyed learning about insects and how their bodies are designed, what they eat, strategies for eluding predators and how they cope with life in harsh environments. 2020 Prep Parent Workshop It was wonderful to again welcome new and existing parents and carers to attend a workshop focusing on health and wellbeing to support a smooth transition to school for our newest enrolments. Families learnt about important milestones for interactions, communication, gross and fine motor from our Support Teacher, Jae Brough. Our Head of Positive Education, Megan Hay discussed tips for separation anxiety, morning and night routines and the importance of student attendance. These workshops have been a great opportunity for families to begin to connect with one another. We look forward to seeing them again soon for the prep interviews early in term 4. Olympics Unleashed Years 4, 5 & 6 had the pleasure of participating in the Olympics Unleashed Queensland Schools Program. The elite athletes Olivia Tauro (Athletics) and Ashleigh Swadling (Sailing) aspiring to Tokyo 2020 were excited to inspire and motivate our students to be the best they can be!

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
We are learning to be safe, respectful and considerate by communicating with others positively and politely including cyber communication. Our school works to support students to develop positive and safe online behaviours in partnership with parents and carers. Internet experiences at school are highly monitored and regulated, but this can be different when children are online outside the school hours (depending upon the internet controls that are in place). Below is a useful website and link for parents and carers to be aware of: Office of the eSafety Commissioner – Provides cyber safety related information and services for parents and students, including mechanisms for reporting concerns. Primary Resources – This link will take you to a range of activities to help pri-mary age children to learn more about how to be safe online. These are best when completed under the guidance of an adult, so that you can discuss the important messages within them.
NAPLAN Individual Student Reports went home with our Year 3 and Year 5 students this week. We are currently looking at our whole school data and celebrating many successes. More information on how our school is performing will be in our next newsletter. NAPLAN Online Many Queensland state schools are currently undertaking training activities in preparation for NAPLAN Online. To help schools prepare for NAPLAN Online, our school will participate in a School Readiness Test (SRT) on Wednesday 16th September, 2019. The SRT is a familiarisation activity to help confirm each school’s technical, student and staff readiness, and will help our school prepare for a transition to NAPLAN Online. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student test results. The SRT provides two tests that take approximately 45 minutes to complete: a writing test for Years 5 and an omnibus test for Years 3 and 5. The collective learnings of Queensland schools taking part in the SRT will help transitioning schools to have positive experiences with NAPLAN Online. NAPLAN Online will provide a better assessment for all. It will:
• Feature tailored testing which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability resulting in better assessment. • Provide a more engaging test experience for students. • Provide more precise results so teachers can identify learning priorities and meet individual student needs.
Parents and carers can also familiarise themselves with the NAPLAN Online platform by using the public demonstration site available at: www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site . Further information about NAPLAN Online including frequently asked questions and answers are available at: www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online . We will keep you up-to-date with how the transition to NAPLAN Online is progressing.
Hello and welcome to the third edition of P&C Corner for 2019. A place where your friendly P&C inform you of upcoming events and matters concerning the P&C. Disco! Thanks to all members of the BPSS community who supported last term’s Disco. Your support helped the P&C raise around $1200! A special thank you to all the kids who came along and supported our cause. Also thank you to Mr Mat Young for organising such an awesome disco. Walk or Ride to School Day on Friday 11th October Help us celebrate Mental Health Week by joining us on “Walk or Ride to School Day” (1st Friday of Term 4) Did you know the benefits for children who walk or ride to school include:
Better road safety skills
Improved health through increased physical activity
Arriving at school alert and ready to learn
Improved concentration, sleep and relaxation
Improved self-esteem, confidence and independence
Opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills
More time together with family and friends
The P&C will be handing out fruit under the Year 3 block to those who participate on the day. So come and grab a piece of fruit after your walk or ride. We would love to see lots of children and their parents! SAFETY REMINDER!! Parents – please ensure that safety issues have been considered when allowing your child to participate in this activity. We recommend that you travel with your children or organise them to travel with others. “Take to the Stage” concert! We are currently seeking donations of goods, cash or gift vouchers to assist us with the upcoming raffle at the school’s annual “Take to the Stage” concert. Funds raised from the raffle will help our children so please donate. No donation is too small and we will in turn support your business with an acknowledgement in our school’s newsletter that is distributed to our 400+ families each week, and at the event. If you are able to support us for this event, kindly contact us at school reception. Air-conditioning Update The P&C is proud to announce a $30 000 donation towards building improvements! This will go towards helping guarantee the installation of air-conditioning in our current Year 4 classrooms (due to be completed in the September holidays) as well as the current Year 3 classrooms (as part of that blocks rebuild/refurbishment ready for 2020). This means that in only 3 years we have been able to air-condition the whole school except the current Year 1 and 2 block. This amazing feat could only happen with the support of the whole school community. Well Done Team BPSS! We look forward to ongoing BPSS support as we work to air-condition our last major teaching block. Stay tuned for announcements on future fundraisers early next year. Recycling Update BEST IN QUEENSLAND! BPSS is officially the school that has raised the most money through recycling. AREN’T WE AWESOME! So keep collecting your recycling over the September holidays! Remember, every time you place a recyclable drink container in the special orange bag and bring it to school on collection day it means more money towards air-conditioning. This fortnightly event occurs every second Wednesday. (The Wed. before assembly or even weeks of each term) See Andrea Chisholm and her amazing group of helpers under the Year 3 block to drop off your collection on these mornings. Last chance to contribute this term will be Wednesday 18th September. Happy Holidays The P&C would like to wish all of our community a very happy and safe holiday. We look forward to seeing you all next term.

ENVIROBANK RECYCLING UPDATE (From Andrea Chisholm—Teacher)
As the weather warms up again, we hope to see our recycling collections on Wednesday morning grow! Remember, we collect fortnightly on even school weeks. Our last collection for Term 3 will be the last Wednesday of term which is 18 September. We’ll resume in Week 2 after the holidays. If you’re going camping or having a family get-together, don’t forget to collect the drink containers for recycling! If you have glass, it can be taken to a local recycling centre like Envirobank or Tomra and you can either collect some pocket money, or donate to the school by using our code C10007643. Thank you for those of you who are bringing your plastic lids to us, we are collecting them for Envision Hands in Victoria who recycle them to make prosthetic limbs. 4A contributed a large collection this week.
THANK YOU ALL! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
HELP SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT
Student council have noticed that our bins are overflowing with rubbish! This rubbish is ending up in our gardens and in our playground. In order to do our part to reduce waste at school student council have decided to take part in the official Nude Food Day on October the 16th. To prepare us for the day, Bellevue Park have decided to do Nude Food Wednesday every week starting the 28th of August! What is Nude food? Nude food is food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or packaging. If everyone in the school reduces their lunch-box by one piece of plastic every week between now and the end of the year that’s 8,582 pieces of rubbish! Not only will it encourage students to think about the environment, it encourages healthy eating as the easiest nude food is fruit and vegetables.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - TAKE TO THE STAGE (BPSS PERFORMANCE AT HOTA OCTOBER 28, 2019) This year marks the 10th year anniversary of Performing Arts run by Mr Young and Mrs Theuerkauf at Bellevue Park. The 2019 show will feature a collage of the greatest acts from our shows over the past 10 years. Due to safety reasons HOTA have adjusted their holding area regulations. Unfortunately, this change has impacted on BPSS and we are unable to house all our students backstage for the entire performance duration. As a result of this, we have had to split our show in order to accommodate maximum numbers of supporters to be able to see the show. Unfortunately keeping the show to only one performance would force ticket sales to be limited to only ONE per student (as we would have to house over 300 students in the audience and limit ticket sales to less than 800 (essentially one ticket per family.) As you can imagine, this was not acceptable given the response to last years event (sold out) as well as the trauma of asking families to determine which family member was able to see their student perform. After much deliberation and many attempts to ensure that all family members have the ability to see the performance without restricted ticket allocation, we have decided to split the production into 2 ACTS on the same evening. Tickets have been reduced to $10 per person and each ACT will have approximately 1100 tickets available for sale (i.e. approx. 2200 tickets available for the evening). This enables more members of the community to celebrate our spectacular Dance Program at BPSS. Those who would like to see the entire show will simply need to book tickets for both ACT 1 and ACT 2 of TAKE TO THE STAGE (Total cost for both ACTS would be $20 pp). Those who would just like to see their child perform will be able to purchase a ticket for the ACT their child performs in. Each ACT and the year level and/or groups that will be performing are listed below.
TAKE TO THE STAGE - ACT 1 – JUNIOR (5:00PM – 5:50PM approx.) Prep Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Junior Choir Senior Choir Inspirators Energiser Boys (Energiser Year 4 girls that are not in Snr Choir are not required for ACT 1)
TAKE TO THE STAGE - ACT 2 – SENIOR (6:30PM – 7:20PM approx.) Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Energisers Inspirators
Organising the production in this way enables all performing students to be safely housed in holding areas available within the venue. It also enables students who are not required in an ACT to potentially purchase a ticket with family members and watch half of the production. All students performing in the ACT will NOT be able to leave their holding area until their ACT has completed. Permission and media consent forms will be sent home in week 1, Term 3. There will be no cost for the students to rehearse at HOTA or to perform at HOTA (Monday 28 October 2019). If a student wishes to watch an ACT that they do not perform in, they are required to purchase a ticket. The cut-off date for returning this permission will be Week 5- Friday 16 August 3pm. Students who do not return their permission note by this date will not be able to perform or attend the dress rehearsal at HOTA during the day on October 28, 2019. Unfortunately, we will be unable to accept notes after the due date. Thank you for your understanding. Performing at HOTA is an invaluable experience for your child. Both Mr Young and Mrs Theuerkauf really would like ALL students to be involved this year – after all it is the 10 Year Anniversary of BPSS shows created by the dynamic duo. As soon as your child’s permission note is returned you will be given the live link to purchase your ticket/s. This will mean families returning permission slips early will have the opportunity to purchase the best tickets for the Acts they wish to see prior to a general release of ticket sales.

Coughs, colds and other illnesses can spread easily at school. Please remind your children to wash their hands regularly and cover coughs and sneez-es. If your child is ill, please keep them at home and notify the school as soon as possible. You should seek medical advice if you are concerned about your child’s health. Let’s work together to keep everyone healthy so children can recover as quickly as possible and come back to school ready to learn.
