Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Procedures for Reporting Sickness absence - As the cold weather and dark night approach I wish to remind parents
and carers about the procedure for reporting student absence. As part of our safeguarding procedures parents and carers
must telephone the school by 08:00 on the first day of their child’s absence and every day thereafter recording (i) their
child’s name, (ii) their form and (iii) the reason for their absence. The attendance secretary will transfer this information each
day to the registers. Alternatively, parents may contact the school via the school messaging service before 08:00 on the first
day of their child’s absence and every day thereafter. Parents and carers are also reminded that students must not contact
them during the school day to report that they are feeling unwell but should report this to our staff, who will make a referral
to our First Aider, Miss Matthews. The First Aider will then contact parents if they think that their child is unfit for school.
Our attendance target for the year is 96% and our current attendance for this year is a fantastic 96.5%. Well done to the
vast majority of students who have made an excellent start to the year, many of whom have 100% attendance.
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Foulger - Many congratulations to Miss Champ and her new husband Mr Phil Foulger
who were married by Fr Des last weekend. We wish them many years of good health and happiness together.
I hope you have a good weekend, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
This week nine students prepared to be commissioned as extraordinary
ministers of communion. They reflected upon the importance of the Eucharist, the
role of an extraordinary minister of communion and spent time in adoration con-
templating their ministry. The students will be commissioned at our feast day cele-
bration to help minster in school but also in their Parishes. We are very proud of
their commitment and their maturity.
Well done to Chloe O'Grady, Merin Joy, Aisling Dalton, Maeve Dolan, Mar-
garet Adams, Lily White, Ellie Douglas, Christy Corkery, and Coleen Hoey.
Thank you to those commissioned last year who supported the training and to Mrs
Isherwood and Miss Keane for their support.

Year 7 Information Evening
It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 parents at our Information evening last night. Parents were able to meet their child’s tutor and
attend workshops to help support their child during their time at Cardinal Newman. Thank you to our wonderful prefects who were
excellent ambassadors for the school on the evening.

Calais
On Saturday Miss Keane and Mrs Isherwood drove to Calais with the Kenelm Youth Trust. We took with us all
of the aid that had been collected and when we arrived, realised that this was much needed. This was our third
trip to Calais and very different to our previous two visits. We were unable to get into the camp due to a
protest being held to stop the demolition of the camp. The protest wasn't held by the refugees themselves but by
a number of charities. Unfortunately, the result was that the refugees were beaten and tear gas was let off in the
camp. Witnessing this was very upsetting but nothing compared to how they must have felt. The aid we collect really does go to much needy
families and we spent time in the distribution warehouse cooking for 3000 refugees and building shelters for them.
There are currently 1056 children in the camp that are unaccompanied, meaning their parents and loved ones either died on the journey or since
they arrived in camp. Please keep those who are suffering so terribly in your prayers and watch this space as we continue to do all we can to help in
any way.

Poem of the Week:
Mametz Wood
(Owen Sheers)
Taken from the GCSE WJEC Eduqas Poetry Anthology
For years afterwards the farmers found them –
the wasted young, turning up under their plough blades
as they tended the land back into itself.
A chit of bone, the china plate of a shoulder blade,
the relic of a finger, the blown
and broken bird’s egg of a skull,
all mimicked now in flint, breaking blue in white
across this field where they were told to walk, not run,
towards the wood and its nesting machine guns.
And even now the earth stands sentinel,
reaching back into itself for reminders of what happened
like a wound working a foreign body to the surface of the skin.
This morning, twenty men buried in one long grave,
a broken mosaic of bone linked arm in arm,
their skeletons paused mid dance-macabre
in boots that outlasted them,
their socketed heads tilted back at an angle
and their jaws, those that have them, dropped open.
As if the notes they had sung
have only now, with this unearthing,
slipped from their absent tongues.
Year 8 Football vs Finham Park
On Wednesday 28 September Cardinal Newman played
Finham Park.
After 2 minutes Newman went one up with a goal from Emmanuel
Igboekwu. Unfortunately Newman couldn’t keep the lead and were 4-1
down by half time.
In the second half Newman scored 4 goals - Freddie Painter, Mikey Walsh
and Oisin Kavanagh (2 goals). Unfortunately this wasn’t enough and Finham
won the game 8-5.

Cardinal Newman’s Year 10 team remain unbeaten after a victory over
Finham Park on 29 September.
An early goal from Jonathan Ngandu put Newman 1-0 up, before
Finham pulled a goal back to make the score 1-1 at half time.
Newman dominated the second half with goals from Tresor Rudasingwa,
Marcus Hill and Timothy Yonas rounding off a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Cross Country Results so far this
year
FOUR fixed events are taking place
around the city this year in Cross
Country.
Cardinal Newman have taken in excess of 25 students each time
from all year groups, boys and girls.
At Finham last week, the students were targeted to 'beat their last
placement' in their age group. All the students achieved this target
and ran the races of their lives showing individual determination
and team support for each other.
As a result, 6 students came in the top 15 in their age groups,
receiving a letter stating they have qualified for the West Midlands
Cross Country event at the Alexandra Stadium.

Shoe Box Appeal 2016
Last year we had a very successful Shoe Box Appeal with winning tutor groups collecting 16 and
the school overall collecting 188 boxes. This year we would love to beat it! The Shoe Box
Appeal sends shoe boxes filled with gifts to children in countries who have suffered extreme
poverty or war. This could be the only gift they get in their lives.
This year we want to make it bigger and better. Our aim is for each tutor group to produce a
minimum of 4 shoe boxes; preferably for teenage girls and boys. This age group receive the
lowest number of shoe boxes and yet there are so many teenagers who need them. You are
welcome to give additional boxes.
Students are asked to bring in items to fill these wonderful shoes boxes. The most important items are:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Soap
Sponge or flannel
Comb or brush
Exercise books and pens or pencils
It is important the items that fill the shoe boxes are NEW as these are a GIFT. Only hats, gloves and socks can be given as clothes items.
Please note that war games/toy soldiers/guns and liquids are not able to go in these boxes.
Further information can be found at: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/
All boxes need to be filled and decorated by Monday 7 November 2016.
Please start collecting items for your shoe boxes now. Thank you for your support for this wonderful cause.

Proposal for a new Peace Orchard
To parents & supporters of Cardinal Newman Catholic School
As part of Cardinal Newman’s status as a national Beacon School of Peace, a new apple orchard of
300 trees is planned on 3.7 acres of land at Coundon Hall Park. The site is between the playing
fields on Tamworth Road and Coundon Wood on Long Lane and will be easily accessible from the
car park off the Tamworth Road. The project is a partnership between Cardinal Newman,
Normandy Day UK and Coventry City Council, who have offered the site and will help maintain it.
The orchard will commemorate soldiers who fell among the apple orchards of Normandy during
the Battle of Normandy between June and August 1944 and is the brainchild of 93 year-old
decorated Coventry Normandy veteran, Dennis Davison. Accompanied by on-site and digital
information, the orchard will be a practical and enjoyable way of learning about the significance of
these historical events, Coventry’s role as the City of Peace and Reconciliation and how to make
cider and apple pies!
Before the project can start, we need to secure grant money. To secure the money we need you
to tell us what interests you about this project so that it can be designed and managed to suit you and the aims of the school.

Dance Workshop
On Wednesday 28th September, 20 Year 7 and 8 girls were fortunate enough to participate in a
contemporary dance workshop. Nick Smith from Youth Dance Coventry visited Cardinal Newman and
delivered a fantastic creative workshop that the students enjoyed from beginning to end. From floor work to
corner work and creating their own material our students showed determination, lots of talent and effort
beyond expectation. Caelen Corkery, Kyla Gomez and other Year 8 students will now go on to take part in Youth Dance Coventry outside
of school.
If any other students wish to attend a free trial with Coventry Youth Dance please see Mrs Harris.
Classes are held: Tuesdays 6.00 – 8.00 pm - Venue: Ellen Terry Building, Coventry University, Priory Street, Coventry CV1 5FB
