NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
It is rightly said, science isn't about
why, it's about why not? It was with
t h i s l o g i c t h a t H a r r y B re a r l ey
coincidentally discovered stainless
steel. His endeavour was only for an
advanced metal to eliminate corrosion,
and fortunately his fishing expedition
succeeded in discovery of the most
versatile metal called 'stainless steel'.
The versatility of stainless steel can be
inferred from the fact that till date we
are only discovering newer stainless
s t e e l g r a d e s a n d a s s o r t e d
applications. I can proudly say, Jindal
Stainless is not only producing this
versatile metal in million tonnes, but
also striving to achieve its vision of 'improving lives' by augmenting the usage of 'stainless steel'
through innovative solutions for all users, existing or potential. We at Jindal Stainless, still
remain as inquisitive about this metal as Harry was while taking a shot in the dark and are
continuously striving for the best.
In this issue you will come across features which highlight our avid efforts to promote this metal
through a uniques stainless steel training & Demo Van. Plumbing is looking for a sustainable
solution due to seepage in ordinary steel pipes and apprehension of carcinogenic traits in
plastic pipes. Stainless steel is on its way to find an intense use in plumbing solutions in future
keeping in mind the water loss, life cycle costing and its hygienic properties to carry water safely
to your homes. We are organising several workshops to familiarise all stakeholders with this new
concept in India. We are also reaching out to various institutes to impart knowledge about
stainless steel applications.
Not to forget, do attempt our quiz section and share your feedback about the Stainless Post.
Season's Greetings to all.

STAINLESS STEEL PLUMBING SOLUTIONS - AWARENESS PROGRAMSFOR PLUMBERS
homas Fuller rightly said, "We never Tknow the worth of water till the well is
dry”. In India, scarcity of water, pipeline
leakages, increasing water theft and poor
quality of water supply line are prominent
problems. This makes stainless steel an
ideal metal for plumbing solutions. Stainless
Steel is preferred in terms of maintaining
hygiene in water based applications. It is
estimated that 29% of the water is wasted
due to leakage in plumbing. Stainless Steel
plumbing reduces water leakage drastically.
To i n c re a s e i t s u s a g e i n p l u m b i n g
applications, Jindal Stainless conducted an
awareness program for p lumbers in
September in South Delhi with the help of
Indian Plumbing Skills Council (IPSC)
under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna
(PMKVY) scheme. This program was
conducted for 50 plumbers introducing
stainless steel plumbing, its usage and
benefits of stainless steel plumbing were
explained to them. These plumbers were
awarded certificates of Level-1 in Stainless
Steel plumbing on the basis of assessment
done at the end of the program.

decision. In the meeting, officials conveyed to
Gahlot that due to the poor condition of bus
stands, the people of Delhi face several
troubles every day, which becomes worse
during monsoon.
The Delhi government has nearly 4,627 bus
stands all over the city and most of these
stands in the outskirts are made of stainless
steel boxes. The Department will rebuild all
these stands and make them like shelters.

STAINLESS SPIRIT
Tell us about your family and your place
of origin?
I was born in a farmer's family in district
Almora in Uttarakhand. Seeing difficult times
and limited opportunities in our native place,
my father moved to Delhi where he worked as
a helper at a doctor's clinic. Back in our
village, while still in my adolescence, I was
taking care of my mother and a younger
brother. My school was about 8 kms from my
house and means of transport were very
limited, making commuting to school an
ordeal. Besides, push for education in small
villages, like ours, where poverty is pertinent,
yields little. Thus, I received only basic
education and could study only till class
twelfth. My mother's sudden illness forced me
into marriage, and before I could even stand
on my feet, I had yet another life to provide for.
In what circumstances did you join JSL?
Hoping to find a job to support my family, I
landed up in Hisar, where my maternal uncle
worked with the central government. I arrived
in Hisar with nothing but a bag of clothes and
I wish the company to
grow by leaps and
bounds so as to generate
more employment
opportunities.

Meet the man who had risen from

anything is possible. The one who

Describe your first few years at JSL
My initial years at the Hisar plant were
extremely challenging. Everything from the

I still remember a 19 year old young

is no wonder that he has come this

not until my acquaintance with Mr Sunil Gera,
my mentor, that I learnt the required skills to
work at a steel melt shop. Under his guidance,
I moved on to acqu i re pos i t ions o f
responsibility and went up the corporate
ladder. The fire that scared me first, was a
hope towards the shining future.
Share your most memorable instance at
JSL.
It was in 1990s that I achieved my first
milestone of success. I was in the night shift
and we were making J3 grade of stainless
steel. Back then, J3 grade used to take three
hours to finish, in per heat. There were not
many people around at that time. I thought of
experimenting a little in order to reduce the
lead time. And so it happened. My experiment
was a success. I reduced the lead time by 45
minutes and set a new benchmark by
completing it in 2 hours 15 minutes. Mr
Subrato Bhattachar ya, who was the
production head then, extolled me to the
skies. There was no looking back after that.
What's your message to the JSL Family?
The road to success is difficult. Sometimes
luck favours you and sometimes you make
your own luck with hard work and dedication.
But, it's never easy for anyone. Even the most
successful people in the world have
experienced failures. But those who rise up
against difficulties and continue the march
forward are bound to succeed. My wishes are
always with my fellow workers and specially
with the young colleagues who are full of life
and colours. I wish them all the success to get
going, despite the hurdles. Furthermore, I
wish the company to grow by leaps and
bounds so as to generate more employment
opportunities. I can never forget how a 19 year
old boy found his true mettle within the walls
of a steel melt shop. In the flames of the fire
that nurtures the blazing metal, a young boy
was nurtured for life.

QUIZ OF THE MONTH (ANSWER & WINNERS)
Last month, we asked the following question.
Stainless Steel was invented by an
eminent scientist depicted in the image.
Name the person.
QUIZ
ANSWER
He is Harry Brearley (18 February 1871 – 14 July 1948) was an English metallurgist, usually
credited with the invention of "rustless steel" (later to be called "stainless steel" ).
In the troubled years immediately before World War I, arms manufacturing increased
significantly in the UK, but practical problems were encountered due to erosion (excessive
wear) of the internal surfaces of gun barrels. Brearley began to research new steels which
could better resist the erosion caused by high temperatures (rather than corrosion, as is often
mentioned in this regard). He began to examine the addition of chromium to steel, which was
known to raise the material's melting point, as compared to the standard carbon steels.
During his tenure with Brown Bayley's Steel Works, while investing ways to eliminate rust in gun
barrels, when by accident, he noticed a discarded steel sample from an earlier test was not
rusting, while other samples were. The result was a chrome alloy steel, much more rust
resistant than seen before. The date was June 4, 1912. Two months later, on August 20, 1912,
stainless steel was cast for the first time.
