On Monday we heard about Harmony Day and what this truly means to us living in Australia. It means that everyone belongs in our country and is welcomed. Although Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived in Australia for thousands of years, most of Australia’s population is made up of people whose families only arrived in the country within the last 200 years. When European settlers arrived there were around 600 Indigenous nations (groups or communities) living all around Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a vast and rich heritage, with sacred sites around Australia and many dreamtime stories. Because the majority of Australia’s population is made up of people who were born here, or moved here only one, two or three generations ago, everyone has different and varied backgrounds: Italian, Greek, English, Vietnamese, Irish, Korean, Canadian and so many more.
All the different cultures that come together in Australia bring many things with them: different foods, ways of dressing, languages, customs and beliefs. Harmony Day is about celebrating these differences, embracing new cultures, and making sure that everybody is included in society, as well as celebrated for their uniqueness. On Monday we heard about all the wonderful things that were going to happen. On Tuesday, we began with a dress up. Teachers and students dressed in cultural attire or orange, the colour of Harmony Week, or in flag colours. We saw so many wonderful costumes and zany outfits. We watched as the markets came to life and what a wonderful time everyone had. On Wednesday, we were entertained with a great display of martial arts from Kade Cataldo and Kobe Musitano. We were all very impressed. Kade, who has achieved a black belt, even placed Mrs Plajzer on the floor as part of the demonstration. We have so many talented students in our school who are achieving so many fantastic things. On Thursday, there were activities in the Library to celebrate Harmony Week. Special thanks to Mrs Stephanie Taylor, who provided world delights at recess for students to feast upon. They really were a huge hit for the children. Thanks also for providing popcorn and lollipops for our special feast day. Today, we celebrated Leschenault Feast Day. What a sensational day it turned out to be. We began by celebrating Mass with Father Jess and our Parish community, then delved into sporting activities and finished with movie theatres around the school. Students were able to choose their venue and movie. Congratulations everyone on a fantastic day. Nature Play Thank you to our wonderful parents who assisted with the Nature Play retrieval plan last weekend. Special thanks to Bunbury Catholic College for their kind donation of the nature play equipment. Seven fabulous families, helped to collect quite a bit of the equipment and bring it to our school grounds. Shortly, we will be asking for volunteers to help erect the equipment and create three more nature play areas in our school. A big thank you to Claire Treasure and Sheree Angel for organising this. Reconciliation Busy Bee Thank you so much to the families who joined us on Sunday, 12 March, for the busy bee in our Church grounds. It is a wonderful way to prepare our Church in readiness for the Sacrament. Every year we ask families to donate one hour to help prepare the Church.
CHRISM MASS Every year in the Bunbury Cathedral we celebrate a special Chrism Mass. At this Mass each Parish is given the special oil for Confirmation, which is known as Chrism. Our students are anointed with this oil on the day of their Confirmation. Usually this special Mass falls on a school day so we bus our student to the Mass so that they can participate. Unfortunately, this year, the date for this Mass is in the school holidays. Therefore: we would like to invite our students in year six who will be making their Confirmation, to join us at Mass on Tuesday, 11 April at 11.00am in the Cathedral if possible. POKEMON CARDS & BEYBLADES Last year we allowed the playing of Pokemon cards as many children enjoyed this activity at recess and second Lunch, The only condition we stipulated was that no trading was to take place, as at times the younger children are not aware of the value of the cards they are playing with. It was explained that if trading took place we would have to ban this activity. It is with regret that we need to inform students that these cards are no longer allowed to be brought to school, because of trading that has taken place. Presently we are seeing many Beyblades coming into the school, and as a school we have decided that these too, will need to be banned.
SCHOOL SORES There have been several reported cases of Impetigo (School Sores) in the school Symptoms include itchy pustules and scabs. Lesions on exposed skin should be covered with a waterproof dressing. Children are infectious as long as there is discharge from untreated lesions. Antibiotic treatment is available from your doctor, if necessary. Children should not return to school until the day after treatment has commenced.

Nguyet lives with a severe disability, and has suffered
isolation in her native Vietnam as a result. A Caritas-
supported program offered her education, creative
outlets and much-needed community interaction.

In a small town in Vietnam, a severe disability kept young
Nguyet behind closed doors. Constrained by the high
demands of her condition, her parents were also isolated
from their neighbours. There is a high level of disability in
Vietnam, particularly as a legacy of war, but little support
for families whose children have disabilities. People with
disability have poorer health outcomes, lower educational
achievements, lower economic participation and higher
rates of poverty than people without disability.
The future seemed bleak for the whole family, until
Nguyet’s family became participants in a program
supported by Caritas Australia. A neighbour kindly
introduced the family to the Capacity Building for Parent
Associations Supporting Children with Disabilities
program, which has given them support on several levels.
The neighbour, a teacher, has been able to offer Nguyet
home-based education, and there is capacity building for
her parents and others in the same situation, through
their local Parents’ Association. At Association meetings,
Nguyet’s mother has been able to increase her skills for
managing her daughter’s condition, and share her
experiences with other parents of children with
disabilities.
Nguyet has learnt to read and write and better manage
her physical needs, and her creative gifts have been
unlocked. Now she is increasingly engaging with her
neighbours, and she and her parents are more confident
about her future. Whenever they are supported and
cared for properly, children with disabilities can [achieve] change." - Duong, Nguyet's case manager
