AFL Gala DaysIt looks like AFL is becoming increasingly popular on the north coast!

Over 60 students from Maclean High School recently travelled up to Byron Bay for a couple of days to play AFL against several other schools from the far north coast.

On the first day, our junior boys and girls each won two of their four games, while on the second day our senior boys and girls each played four tough games and came very close to winning some of them.

This was a remarkable achievement, especially considering that most of our students had never played AFL before.

All of our students displayed great enthusiasm and deserve special praise for their genuine sportsmanship. Judging by the stories, smiles and laughs on the bus heading home, next year’s AFL Gala Days are likely to be even bigger and better!

Support for StudentsOur school monitors student wellbeing daily. Many of our students have most likely been exposed to distressing images from last week’s event in Christchurch published by the media or social media.

Students may be affected in different ways, depending on their emotional and social wellbeing, and their resilience and support networks. They will also be affected by the community’s reaction and media reports.

Our school provides structure and support for all students including those feeling vulnerable or distressed, and those who have experienced previous trauma and may be more vulnerable.

Schools and school counselling staff respond each day to any significant distress observed in individuals, groups or the school community, using support structures already in place in our school. All staff at Maclean High School have been provided with information on how to respond to and support students during this difficult time.

School counselling staff are available to support students. Please feel free to contact either Kerrie or Andrew at any time (66452244). If students would like to speak with someone anonymously other confidential sources of support are:• Kids Helpline (1800 551 800 or www.kidshelp.com.au)• Headspace (1800 650 890 or www.eheadspace.org.au )

The following may also be of help for you and your family at this time.

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey (Term 1, 2019)

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 25th March and 12th April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday, 25th March. A copy of the consent form will be sent home with students this week. Copies of the form, FAQs and additional information relating to the survey are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
