PARENT PARTICIPATION AT MAGILL
Parent participation is important at Magill School. Our staff and students enjoy parents attending events such as assemblies, parades, acquaintance nights etc. These occasions are an opportunity for us to showcase the wonderful learning that happens every day at Magill School.
Parent participation is also important in partnering with school staff to help guide the school’s directions and programs for the future. There are a variety of ways that parents can get involved, such as; Governing Council, committees, volunteering.
At our Annual General Meeting (AGM) we elected new members onto our Governing Council for 2018. They join our continuing members to make up a full complement of councillors this year. At our first meeting, later in the term, we will decide on official positions.

INFORMATION EVENING
CHINESE BAR CHINESE NEW YEAR TRADITIONS
Chinese culture is filled with holidays and celebrations. Among them is the biggest the Lunar New
Year, In China and Taiwan, offices and schools close for a week. More than 3.5 billion people, in the
world’s largest human migration, are expected to travel so they can ring in the occasion with their
loved ones. February 16, 2018, marks the first day of the Year of the Dog. There are some important
traditions for Chinese New Year.
CLEAN UP
Scrub every nook and crevice of your home to rid yourself of the rubbish and bad mojo of the
previous year. Think of it as a very early spring cleaning. You must complete your work by New
Year’s Day, and then stow away your broom, mop, vacuum cleaner and cleaning products. Because
if you wield these tools on the first few days of the New Year, you will sweep away your good
fortune.
PUT YOUR HOUSE FINANCES IN ORDER
If you borrowed money from family or friends last year, pay them back before the start of the New
Year; any outstanding loans will bring you misfortune. The same goes for unresolved arguments or
grudges, so make peace.
BEAUTIFY YOURSELF…
A haircut and a new outfit - red is the most lucky colour, but if it isn’t your colour, just be sure to
stay away from the unlucky shades of black and white. As with cleaning, trimming your hair in the
first days of the New Year will result in snipping away good fortune, so groom accordingly.
BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME
Decorate your clean, sparkling house with a bowl of oranges or apples, or with live plants (avoid
white flowers; they are associated with funerals). It is also customary to hang up signs with Chinese
sayings and the character (fu)福,which means good luck. However, if you choose the latter, display
them upside down; this signifies that success is coming.
FEAST WITH YOUR FAMILY
The most important night for getting together is New Year’s Eve. That is when you gather with your
nearest and dearest for dinner, eating dishes like fish (always served whole), dumplings and sticky
rice cakes. Because New Year’s is a time when young adults are expected to bring home their
boyfriend or girlfriend for inspection, in the past few years an industry of boyfriends and
girlfriends that you can rent for the holiday has increased in China.
SET A POSITIVE TONE FOR THE YEAR
According to Chinese superstition, whatever you do during the New Year’s period will characterize
the 12 months to follow. So no crying, no arguing, and no borrowing money for the first two weeks,
unless that is how you were hoping to spend your days.
BE A GIVER
According to tradition, hong bao)红包 - or red envelopes - containing a significant amount of
money which are presented to children, unmarried adults, and seniors on New Year’s Eve. However,
technology has blown the custom wide open, and now people of all ages and relationships both
send and receive their(hong bao)红包 via text message. The funds, often as little as U.S. $2,.00
can be deposited into mobile payment accounts.
The Premiers Reading Challenge is underway and many students are already filling in their forms with books that they have read. In 2017 at Magill School from our Resource Centre, 22,982 books from the PRC booklist were read. What an enormous number. Listed below are the top 10 reads from 2017.

PASTORAL CARE AT MAGILL
We are already well into the term, but allow me to add my word of welcome to Magill School for 2018. I’m Kat Edson and I am the Pastoral Care Worker here at Magill. There are a number of different facets to my role however the main ones include support and encouragement within our school community and working alongside leadership and staff for the prevention and promotion of well-being. It is such a unique role where I have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of school life and help out where possible. I will be at the school on Tuesdays and Fridays (at least for the first two terms), and can be contact via the office or via email. My email is [email protected] If you have any questions around my role or how I can support you and your family while at Magill, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to journeying through another successful year with you all. Kat Edson
IDENTITY
Our class did the VIA survey
to find out our character
strengths. We all had some
of the same traits but
everyone had them in a
different order. We also had
our photos taken to create our self
portraits. Using white paper we ruled grid
lines very faintly in pencil to copy the
photo by each grid square. We learnt a bit
about shading for effect. The final product
looked amazing.
HASS/GEOGRAPHY
For the last couple of weeks, and for the
rest of this term our class will been
studying “Water In The World”. In
learning teams we have mind-mapped
our ideas by drawing a circle with the
topic “Water in the World” written in the
middle. We did subtitles with topics and we wrote
what we knew about water and problems or issues
to do with water. We also learnt some vocabulary
used when describing water. In Visual Art we drew
pictures of taps with lines creating water movement
and colourful patterns and things that symbolize
water. The class enjoyed using creativity and our
imaginations.
