WORKSHOP REVIEWS: On the Sharon Lynn Williams Workshop - Luminous Oil Florals

As a 'realist' painter who started in acrylics but was now just starting to explore oil paint, I was attracted to Sharon's workshop to learn more about painting with oils, particularly 'wet-on-wet', try painting flowers, which I had no success at, and to loosen up my painting style. I wanted to be challenged and pushed a bit and Sharon did not disappoint! It was obvious she has a tremendous amount of experience painting 'wet-on-wet' and was able to lay paint down with very few strokes, using incredible color. To achieve the 'luminescent florals', which was the focus of her workshop, she emphasized the importance of starting a painting with transparent colors to create depth and richness where wanted, then adding opaque colors to highlight and emphasize the important parts of the painting. I had never paid much attention to transparent and opaque colors but after this I will ensure my color palette has enough of both! I don't think I can do a painting now without focusing on the transparency of any paint. Painting 'wet-on-wet' was totally new and, doing two paintings in two days, I quickly learned and understood the process. In doing so I also learned the importance of planning brush strokes, and ensuring the color values and hues were correct before applying them. I never thought I could start and finish a painting in one day or a few hours. I hope to try 'plein air' painting some day and this workshop also prepared me for that! Her composition and style of applying paint loosely, not worrying about so much detail, took me where I needed to go to 'loosen up'! It was an incredible valuable course for the fee that was charged!!! Thanks Wally

Email from Sharon Lynn Williams:

I had a wonderful time! The students were great and most appreciative. Dan and Sophia were most helpful and kind. The students have encouraged me to put in a proposal to teach an acrylic workshop,. The hotel was wonderful -thankfully they put me on the 4th floor, away from the mess of young boys present for a hockey tournament. I look forward to returning to your group in the future!

Cindy Revell Oil Painting Hi Sue, Sophia and Dan, I just wanted to say thank you once again for your help with this workshop. I am really happy with how it turned out and it certainly wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without you. Thank you for making this a great experience. I had an excellent time and am impressed with the artwork produced by the participants. They should all be proud of their work. Cindy. What a great Workshop! Cindy shared many great tips to help us out and made a point of coming around while we worked to encourage, suggest and guide us. We all produced some lovely fun whimsical pieces to bring home. Great turnout with seventeen students, some from the Leduc Art Club. Thanks to Dan and Sophia for their volunteer work, they looked after us very well!" L. Nagle Cindy's workshop was truly 2 fun filled days!! I did not realize how much I had missed ""playing" - with freedom to use crazy colors and wild ideas ... A wonderful instructor - I hope she returns. What was also so encouraging - the lovely pieces the participants were producing. ... magical! I had so much fun in Cindy Revell’s whimsical oil painting workshop. She is very enthusiastic and loves to share her amazing talent and ideas inspiring me to unlock my imagination. Although it was an oil painting class, Cindy was also very open to acrylic that some of us used including myself. She did however show us the benefits of oils and I am now eager to start painting with a new medium. Can’t wait to explore whimsy and oils!

AFTER HOURS - University Hospital

September 3 to November 2 If you are interested in showing in this display, we are being featured as the Art Society of Strathcona County. There are 11 panels behind glass located by the main entrance of the U of A Hospital and receive hundreds of people a day walking past. We will be setting up on September 3, but that is a holiday, so I will be contacting the hospital to double check and I think it will be the Tuesday which is the 4th. Time will also be announced. Panels will be done by a draw. Please email me on June 1st and the first 11 will be given a panel. If there is an overwhelming response we could have each one have a certain amount of inches as we do in shows. Sales - I will look after the sales and arrange for a switch out twice during our rotation. We will be collecting the money and will donate 30% back to the hospital. If someone is interested in a piece I will cc. you, the artist, and we will go from there. We can arrange a sale and switch out. Please consider that this show takes place as the same time as the Fall Show and also the Cross Cancer so keep that in mind. So... if you are interested please mark June 1st on the calendar and email me. Joyce Boyer - please note a new email - [email protected]

SPRING SHOW 2019

As discussed in a general meeting we have an exciting take on a new show and we will need to do a quick meeting to just get the ball moving prior to the Fall Show as we will have a hand out that will need to be ready for the fall show. Psst… this is going to be such a different take on a show that we have to have it going now. You artists are going to want to be at the OCTOBER MEETING 2018 so that you can get the full view of what this show is going to be like. It could be one that beats records in sales if we work it right. Please email me at [email protected] if you wish to be a part of the organization of this show, so I can get your name down.

Cheers, Joyce

Loft Gallery and Gift Shop

Open Saturday and Sunday 12:00 – 4:00 pm The new May-June rotation will be hung April 28 and promises to be a phenomenal show. We are excited to welcome some new artists to the Loft along with our Feature Artist, Diana Sapara. During this rotation, the Student Art Show and the Studio Tours will take place, potentially bringing in many visitors to the Gallery. This show will run until July 12. As the Loft Gallery moved toward ramping up our Facebook presence, we found it beneficial to discontinue our own Loft Gallery page and amalgamate it with the Art Society page. Now all information and reminders will be on one Facebook page. We have opened the “Shop” feature on the Art Society page to allow you to see all paintings in the Gallery. Please check it out!

SO PROUD OF OUR MEMBER, ANNE McCARTNEY !!! For the past 151 years the American Watercolor Society have hosted a juried international exhibition in New York City. As the awards usually total over $40,000, this has become a very prestigious show for watercolour artists around the world, attracting masters to the medium. After the panel of jurors (5-6) have selected the 150 or so pieces to be exhibited, the pieces are sent to NYC and another panel selects the prize winners. This year my piece “Art for Art’s Sake” was selected for the Gold medal of honour, the top award which comes with a $4000 (US) cheque. I am over the moon and very honoured. I will be heading to NYC at the end of April to receive the award at the awards dinner, a very exciting evening meeting artists from all over who I’ve admired for years, last year I was thrilled to meet Tony Bennett... who knows who’s going to be there this time:). I can hardly wait! www.mccartneyartworks.com www.facebook.com/mccartneyartworks www.facebook.com/AnneMcCartney.watercolorist
