WATER UTILITIES LOSE ABOUT 37% OF VOLUMES OF WATER PRODUCED  AfWA Scientific  and Technical Council  task  force dealing with Non­Revenue Watermet  in  Paris,  France,  from  June  20th  to  22nd  2015  in  order  to  finalize  the  reportrelating to this program initiated three years ago with the support of the USAID/FABRI.The  document  revealed  that  losses  due  to  Non­Revenue  Water  caused  seriousdamage  to water utilities,  because  they  represent approximately 37% of  producedvolumes that are not billed. AfWA experts task force dealing with Non­Revenue Waterthus highlighted in their report  the  leading causes of  this malfunctioning, and maderecommendations for the improvement of the performances of water utilities.The report dealt with the audits/diagnostic of 19 water utilities selected to take part inthe project. Read more

BENIN ACHIEVES THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS: DAVIDBABALOLA PRESENTS HIS ASSESSMENT TO THE GOVERNMENT  Thanks to the efforts carried out by the Société Nationale des Eaux du Bénin (BeninNational Water  Utility)  (SONEB),  the  country  is  ensured  to  achieve  the  millenniumdevelopment goals (MDGs) as regards drinking water supply in urban environment,and to even hope to exceed the forecasts at the end of December 2015. The bestperformances  achieved  by  SONEB  were  presented  on  June  2nd,  2015  by  theManaging  Director  David  Babalola  to  the  members  of  the  Government  during  acouncil of Ministers. According to the manager of the company in charge of drinkingwater  supply  in  the  Benin  urban  environment,  the  investments  carried  out  by  thegovernment  since  2006  in  the  water  sub­sector  in  general  and  the  urbanenvironment supplying system in particular made it possible for SONEB to initiate andimplement projects relating to infrastructures modernization and reinforcement, whichimpact on  the populations has made  it  possible  for Benin  to  catch up with  severalyears of delay. The  total amount of mobilized  resources was about CFA  francs 83billion CFA francs at that time, including more than 73% received from the technicaland  financial  partners  (TFP).  All  these  performances  were  greeted  by  theGovernment,  delighted  at  the  giant  steps  carried  out  with  regard  to  the  challengerelating to the access for all to drinking water in Benin.Read more

NIGER : THE SEEN SIGN A CONVENTION WITH ABDOU MOUMOUNIUNIVERSITY  Abdou Moumouni’s University from Niger, as part of its matching policy training­employment, initiated to approach companies to better adapt its training programs tolabor market requirements. It is in this context that a signature of an agreement tookplace on 1st April 2015 with SEEN, Niger water supply company. Through thispartnership, the two organizations are committed to take action to promote the jointdevelopment of training programs and practice of student internships and researchprofessors in the company, initiate reciprocal continuous training, to enableprofessionals to intervene in the training programs and foster the development oftraining programs and joint research.

 

AKVO FOUNDATION PROPOSES ITS SOLUTIONS FOR THE MONITORINGAND EVALUATION OF PROJECTS  AKVO, a non­profit making foundation based in the Netherlands, is promoting itsproducts with AfWA. On June 24th, 2015, two representatives of this organization,namely Luuk DIPHOORN, East Africa Manager, and Bert DIPHOORN, foreign affairsadviser, had a working session with some AfWA Executive Office members in order topropose the use of their platform, within the framework of the monitoring andevaluation of projects. AKVO is specialized in the development of Mobile Internetsoftware to support international development partnership networks, and to make co­operation and assistance activity more effective and more transparent. Its technologywhich consists in making project assessment from mobiles and GPS data, gives thepossibility, for instance, to be able to present the evolution of various projects throughAfrica, practically in real­time, from the platform.

PSI and AfWA share their visions on sanitation inurban environment

THE INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICES (IPS) AND AfWA CONSULT EACHOTHER FOR THE FUTURE  The Deputy Manager of IPS project on providing sanitation services provision, McHugh Katharine, was welcomed on June 25th, 2015 at AfWA’s head office for aworking session with AfWA’s Executive Director and Programs Director as well. IPShas just obtained a financing from the USAID for an urban sanitation project in threeWest African countries, namely: Ghana, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast).The meeting made it possible for the two organizations to discuss about theiractivities and their prospects in the particular field of sanitation. IPS therefore hopesto have a broader vision of the needs of the populations in the countries concerned,so as to better direct its actions. Practically, the question will consist to initiate with thepopulations various projects ranging from the building of toilets to the management offecal sludge.

 

POLLUTEC SHOWS OFFICIALS CONSULT AfWA FOR AN EVENT

ORGANIZATION IN AFRICA  Four representatives from the Management of Reed Expositions France, who hadcome to participate in the French­Ivorian business forum on the Sustainable City heldon June 29th and 30th 2015 in Abidjan, paid a visit to AfWA Executive Office. Themeeting held on July 1st, 2015 gave the opportunity to the two parties to discussabout the issues and projects relating to water and sanitation in Africa. ReedExpositions France is the world leading show organizer, with 500 shows organized inthe world, including Pollutec shows. It is currently carrying out a reflection on therelevance of the creation of a large­scale event in Africa, on the theme ofenvironment and sustainable development, and from this point of view, relies onAfWA’s knowledge of the field and know­how in order to accompany it in this project. The French delegation, led by Sylvie Fourn, Reed Expositions pole manager,included Stéphanie Gay Torrente, from Pollutec France, Marine Devos from PollutecAlgeria, Morocco and Brazil, and Marie Lalanne, press and international promotionofficer.

LACROIX SOFREL WISHES TO DEVELOP A PARTNERSHIP WITH AfWA INORDER TO BRANCH OUT IN AFRICA  LACROIX Sofrel, specialized in remote control and remote processing equipment forenergy and water supply networks, wants to branch out in Africa. In that regard, itselected AfWA as the partner to achieve its ambition. On Wednesday 1st July 2015,the export project officer of the company, Olivier Biard, had a working session withthe AfWA Executive Office in order to discuss business opportunities in Africa.According to him, LACROIX Sofrel is already rather well established in the French­speaking countries, and would also like to be known in the English­speaking Africa.According to Olivier BIARD, it would be benefit for his company to join the Associationas an affiliated member, therefore having the opportunity to get in touch with thewhole of the stakeholders and partners of African water and sanitation sector. Healso showed a real interest in the animation of a Master class within the framework ofAfWA training projects.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SMALL GRANT : ALL THE FUNDS AREGRANTED  Provided with US $ 300 thousand funds, the small grants program dedicated to theYoung African Professionals of Water and sanitation, financed by the USAID/FABRI,finished off its budget. The last amounts were granted to Senegal with two projectsrelated to reducing Non­Revenue Water and fecal sludge management. On thewhole, 13 projects, shared out in 9 Sub­Saharan countries, were financed for someamounts ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 dollars. Over the 13 projects, only one hasbeen completed, while the others are still going on. The coordinator of the youngprofessionals program, Valentin Kouadio Yao, has already begun the follow­up andevaluation visits to make sure of the good progress of the projects. He carried out afield visit in Kenya and in Uganda last May.The ambition of the Young African Professionals program is to develop the network ofnational committees, by encouraging the establishment of at least a committee inevery country.

PILOT PROJECT ON WATER SAVING WITH ECOBETA DEVICE  The pilot project on water saving initiated by AfWA, in partnership with the Danishcompany ecoBETA, and the Ivorian asset holder company ONEP, is still going on.After the phase of installation of WC mechanisms and tap devices in 4 buildings ofthe administration, the operation continued in the households. On the whole, aboutsixty WC devices were installed. Now, the question is to ensure the follow­up of theimplementation operation, with periodic visits on the various sites to check the stateof the installations and to make sure that there is no leakage.ecoBETA technology makes it possible to realize between 30 and 40% water saving.The results of the experimentation carried out in Abidjan are highly expected, in orderto consider the reduction of the project on a continental scale.

 

>THE NEXT AfWA STC MEETING IS SCHEDULED IN DOUALA  The Scientific and Technical Council of the African Water Association will be held from July 27th to 31st 2015 in Douala, inCameroon, on the following topic : « Water quality and infrastructures management for a better access to water andsanitation services ».

>A WORKSHOP FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NETWORK OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN  In prelude to the official launch of the Network of Professional Women Working in the Water and Sanitation sector relatedactivities scheduled during the AfWA next Congress to be held from February 22nd to 26th, 2016 in Nairobi, in Kenya, twoworkshops will be organized during the STC meeting in Douala from July 27th to 31st 2015 and in Nairobi in November2015.
