We would like to thank everyone who applied for their interest in this Scholarship. Congratulations to the successful applicants and we hope they will continue to strive for excellence.

Mid-Autumn Festival We had a wonderful Mid-Autumn celebration in School last week, with over 400 students and parents attending the event. The festivities started with performances by students in the MPH and culminated with an energetic and colourful Dragon Dance by Yuk Choy (SUWA) Secondary School. We would like to thank the organising committee made up of teachers from Sekolah Tenby and volunteers from the Parents Association for their time and effort in making this a success. It was wonderful to community link with Yuk Choy joining us. Read on to find out more about the celebration.

Charity Drive for Kg. Pergom Orang Asli Village by Tenby Sixth Form IpohThe Tenby Sixth Form will be visiting the Kampung Pergom Orang Asli Village later this term. This has been a long standing tradition by Tenby Sixth Form each year where the students visit the village and spend time with the villagers to create a social bond with them. As part of the support for the Orang Asli Village, the Sixth Formers are organising a charity drive to collect items from our Tenby Community which will be donated to the villagers. There is a donation box in the Administration Office where donations can be left. The following items would be really useful:

Dry, non-perishable food items: rice, cooking oil, tinned food (like sardines), milo, condiments for cooking (sugar, salt, soy sauce), biscuits etc.,

Items for personal hygiene: soap, toothpaste etc.,

Books, games and stationery suitable for young kids

Where to donate: Inside the school admin office.

Last date to donate by: 29th Sept 2016

Community spirit and charity are values we hope to instil in our students. We hope that our Tenby community will give their support to this donation drive in line with supporting the understanding of our Core Value ‘Sensitivity to Cultural Diversity’.

Tenby Book Prize AwardIn Tenby we recognise English as an important language skill that will open many educational and economic opportunities for young people. As part of Tenby’s commitment to promote the use of English within our local community, we have introduced the Tenby Book Prize Award that recognises students from local community schools who have made excellent progress in the English Language. This is in line with the Ministry of Education’s Policy to uphold Bahasa Malaysia whilst strengthening English.

In the past few weeks, we have awarded six Standard 6 students, three from SK Marian Convent and three from SJK (C) Sam Tet for their excellent progress in English.

A Moonlit Festival

Friends and families were delighted by the colourful and lively performances as they attended the Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as the Mooncake Festival). The event was held on the evening of Thursday 15th September at Tenby Schools Ipoh’s very own Multi-Purpose Hall.

It was a night to remember, featuring various performances including an exciting drum performance, a relaxing keyboard ensemble (Dr. Jeffery Rowlands), a graceful ballet performance (Year 11), a passionate solo singing performance (Mrs. Chong Pak Hing), a moving choir performance, and several other vivid dance numbers (Tenby Sixth Form, Year 8, and KBSM4) to keep the audience entertained. Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the night was the lion dance and dragon parade by the Yuk Choy High School students.

When asked what their favourite part of the Mid-Autumn Festival was, the performers had different experiences to share. “We enjoyed performing for the audience even though it was terrifying,” recalled Ashman Kassim and Caffini Lam from the Tenby Sixth Form. Sinead Teh, also from the Tenby Sixth Form answered, “It was endless hours of practising every day trying to make it perfect.” One of the audience members, Teoh Rui Hong replied, “The choir was amazing. They sang really well.”

The night ended with many students, friends and families playing with beautiful paper lanterns under the moonlight together, lighting up the school campus with pastel dots of red, pink, green and yellow lights. The sight of lanterns and the sound of gongs will forever remind us of the memories we shared that night.

Standard 6 Activity - Invitation Card for Prom Night The Standard 6 students just finished their UPSR Examination two weeks ago. It was definitely a nerve-wrecking experience for them. After the major examination, they were put into four groups of six for the post-UPSR Examination activities. They started off with designing the invitation cards for their Prom Night coming up on 25th November 2016. The students were as busy as bees during the process and it helped It bonded them through it.

Here are some pictures of them making the cards.

MERDEKA DAY CELEBRATION

Hari Kemerdekaan is the Independence Day of Malaysia, and is celebrated on 31 August every year to commemorate the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonization. The theme for this year, 2016 is “Sehati, Sejiwa” (One Heart, One Soul) to promote the spirit of togetherness and unity among Malaysians, regardless of race, religion and social backgrounds. Malaysians are urged to stand together and continue to strive for excellence and unity in all aspects of life.

This year marks the 59th anniversary of Malaysian independence and Sekolah Tenby took pride in celebrating almost six decades of harmony and progress in a special assembly. In the course of the morning, Form 4Science & 4Arts students took to the catwalk to recognize several successful Malaysians, each of whom has exceled in his or her area of expertise, while Form 2T students showcased a part of their History syllabus, leading the audience through the events that led to our independence. They put up a drama about what had led to the British and rulers of Perak signing the Pangkor Treaty in November of 1874. Sekolah Tenby primary students, for their part, gracefully performed a mixture of multicultural dances and recited a ‘Pantun’ to highlight the uniqueness of Malaysia.

The assembly concluded with everyone singing along to patriotic songs while waving the Malaysian flag, before re-enacting the scene where our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman led the country in the 7 calls of ‘Merdeka’. It was indeed a colourful and fun-filled celebration enjoyed by the students, parents and teachers of Tenby Schools Ipoh.

News from Tenby Early Years Centre Ipoh

The “Meet and Greet” session which was held on Tuesday 13th September was well received by parents. We shared the School’s Vision, Mission, Core Values and some key foci for the school this year. Parents then proceeded to the respective classes to find out more about the learning that takes place in and out of the classroom besides the goals they have for children followed by the school rules and policies. We encourage parents to take active participation in future school events so that they have the opportunity to find out more about their child’s learning in school.

It was a very informative and interactive day during our “Coffee Morning” on Tuesday 20th September with our parents participating in the Self-Defence Techniques to Stay Safe. We invited Mr. Kala (Grandmaster) together with Mr. Dinesh Kumar from Aelma Taekwondo who demonstrated some simple skills on self-defence to stay safe. Master Kala commented that it's a fact of modern life we sit a lot. We sit in front of computers, in front of the TV and in cars. What about our bodies? We are not made to sit around. Human bodies are made for exercise. Thus he demonstated on ways to kick, walk and look when we are attacked by someone.

Page 15: Newsletter No. 122 September 2016

Mid-Autumn Festival

The assembly started with a short introduction on the Mid-Autumn Festival by our teachers followed by a

lantern walk. Children were introduced to the traditional practices, games and food that are part of this

festival.

To foster the value of traditional practice, we organised a mini lantern walk on Thursday 15th September

around our school compound. Children carried their lanterns and walked around the school to light up the

atmosphere of Mid-Autumn Festival. Although it was broad day light, we had a “pretend play” as if it was

night time. They were so amused with the fact that there was no candle.

News from Primary Mathematics is a subject where you learn best by tackling problems/challenges. Every week, a new challenge will be posted here for you to pit your wits against. We invite you to have a go at solving it. If you get stuck, keep trying, and do go away and come back later- often, you will find that you have a better idea on your second, third or even fourth attempt. Solution to the weekly challenge will be posted in the following week’s Newsletter.

Weekly Maths Challenge #001 – Cows and Sheep

In this field we could say, because of the number of animals there, that each cow can see 4 sheep and 3 (other) cows. This could be worded as follows "Each cow can see one more sheep than cows." There are obviously 4 sheep and 4 cows in the field as you see it. But here are some questions about different fields in which you have to find out how many sheep and cows there are in each field. In field number 1, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see the same number of sheep as cows, so how many cows and sheep are there? In field number 2, each cow can see three times as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see the same number of sheep as cows, so how many cows and sheep are there? In field number 3, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see one more sheep than cows, so how many cows and sheep are there? In field number 4, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see two more sheep than cows, so how many cows and sheep are there? In field number 5, each cow can see three times as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see twice as many sheep as cows, so how many cows and sheep are there?

Supporting Reading at Home (http://www.readingrockets.org/)

Tip #1: Have them tell you a “story.” One great way to introduce kids to literacy is to take their dictation. Have them recount an experience or make up a story. We’re not talking “Moby Dick” here. A typical first story may be something like, “I like fish. I like my sister. I like grandpa.” Write it as it is being told, and then read it aloud. Point at the words when you read them, or point at them when your child is trying to read the story. Over time, with lots of rereading, don’t be surprised if your child starts to recognize words such as “I” or “like.” (As children learn some of the words, you can write them on cards and keep them in a “word bank” for your child, using them to review later.)

Page 19: Newsletter No. 122 September 2016

IPC Home Learning Please take note that at the start of a new IPC topic, we will have an IPC Challenge sheet for your child to attempt throughout the topic duration. The sheet will consist of 5 challenges of different levels and tasks. Every child must submit at least one task and is more than welcome to complete more than one task. More information will be shared on the IPC Challenge sheet. The first IPC Challenge sheet will be given out on Friday 23rd September, 2016.

No Hat No Play Do remember to bring your

school cap for outdoor activities/learning.

Year 5 Prefects We have received many applications and it is pleasing to note that Year 5 children are eager and ready to take on a leadership role. The final selection will be made after Ms. Lam and Ms. Leuty have had an opportunity to speak to the children individually.

Online Home Learning Tasks You may have noticed that some of your child’s home learning tasks are online (e.g. Education City). These tasks are set for a one week duration. Please ensure that your child attempts the online tasks within the stipulated time so that he/she does not miss out the opportunity to recap the learning of the week.

Friday Writing Writing is an essential skill can benefit students for the rest of their lives. Every Friday, the children will engage in writing activities to foster confidence and a lifelong love of writing. Each writing session will focus on parts of the speech in the English language and also using a range of language techniques depending on the year groups and ability levels of the children.

What a Great Week Class 2N!

Class 2N had a great start to the new academic year! The children were very excited to get to know their new friends and new surroundings. They also enjoyed exploring the canteen and getting used to buying their own food there.

Mrs. Magdalene Das

Our first IPC topic was the Brainwave unit. The children learnt about the many functions of the brain.

The children took turns to introduce themselves to their new friends.

They also looked at the IPC Learning Goals.

Can you name all of them?

School Uniform Dear Parents/Guardians, As per the Parents’ and Students’ handbook (page 15), please be reminded black shoes should be worn with the school uniform. Also, if you would like your child to put on something warm in class, please ensure that it is a school jumper/sweat shirt which you can purchase from the school bookshop. Thank you.

Hi, my name is Jaiydaan Raj and I am from 5T and I will be talking about my past few weeks in year 5. The first day I entered the year 5 classroom I was nervous. After seeing some of my friends, I felt motivated. I was astonished to be back in school. I wished my class to be the best and the most hardworking. I also wish that we students of 5T will behave well and stay out of trouble. If I would be a leader I would get my class into challenge to make the impossible to be possible and I won’t give up until the teacher says so. In conclusion I would say Tenby is the best!

Hi I’m Wu Xiaoyu and I’m from China. I’m a new student in Tenby and I have made so many friends. I’m proud to be

Hello…I’m Luukas Waltteri Bister and I’m from Finland. I was nervous in the beginning but now I’m becoming more confident. I’m happy to be in Tenby!

My name is Nehemiah Thevamagan Raj. I am 9 years old and currently in Year 5 at Tenby Schools Ipoh. My favourite subject is Mathematics. I enjoy practising Mathematics during my free time. I also like English because I enjoy reading non-fiction books. Some of the books I enjoy reading are “Guinness book of world records”, “The Olympic and world records book”, “Swim bike run our triathlon story” and “Running with the Kenyans discovering the secrets of the fastest people on earth.” I have great enthusiasm for sports and my hobby is going cycling, swimming, running and tennis but I only play badminton once in a while. I first started doing sports when I was 5 years of age. My father inspired me in

sports. My father trains me in cycling and running but my sister teaches me swimming. Then he started sending me to triathlons which is swimming, cycling and running. I get to travel across the country for my triathlons. However I only play tennis for fun and I do go for coaching. As for badminton, I play with my father and sister outside my house. As for music I love to play the piano but I cannot play any other instruments yet. I would really like to learn how to play the guitar and the flute. I aspire to be an engineer that can fix enormous trucks, tractors, cars, motorbikes and big dirty engines. When I grow up I would like to help kids with sports like cycling, running and swimming. I would like to travel to different countries and give children who are less fortunate, the opportunity to be physically active and have fun.

Tenby Today....the world tomorrow

Off to Dublin on a Scholarship!

Congratulations! Chan Weng Kit our very own SiWu Scholar (Cohort 10) and Sixth Form graduate is now headed on a medical scholarship to the National University of Ireland, Dublin. Weng Kit popularly known as Kevin at our school was awarded the scholarship recently at the Penang Medical College, which has a twinning program with the premier Irish university.

“I owe much to my Tenby sixth form years,” declared Weng

Kit. “I felt greatly challenged to do my best as a Si Wu scholar and as Vice President of the Sixth Form Council. The ethos of our sixth form with its stress on student leadership and enterprise has moulded me into a much stronger person than I once imagined I could be. Thank you, my teacher-mentors and my schoolmates.”

Jia Yi joins Imperial College, London

Low Jia Yi, one of our top

scholars from the Sixth Form Cohort 10, is now studying Biomedicine at the Imperial College, London – one the world’s

top universities. Low Jia Yii was no bookworm at Tenby. She threw herself with gusto into the school’s

production of “The Merchant of

Venice” (2014/2015).

“The drama experience was

something I have never had until I joined the Tenby Sixth Form in Ipoh. Prior to that I was studying in Kajang, Selangor until I completed my SPM examination. It was then

that I saw a video on Youtube about the Shakespearean drama “As You Like It” produced by Tenby Sixth Form, Ipoh. Intrigued by this video, I made enquiries about this school. I was further emboldened when one of my good friends, Olivia Li, told me about Tenby Ipoh. So, I joined the school and I enjoyed every moment of my sojourn in Tenby Ipoh.”

Page 27: Newsletter No. 122 September 2016

Wataro Araki looking forward to join the University of

Malaya

Wataro is poised to join the

University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, in September 2016. An international student from Japan, Wataro has studied at Tenby International School since his primary school years. He will be creating history for us as he will be the first international school from Tenby Ipoh to be joining Malaysia’s longest established

university.

“This is the first time the University of Malaya is opening its doors to A-level students. It is doing so concurrently with the

Universiti Science Malaysia in Penang. I will be doing Economics at UM. This university also has a partnership with the famous Waseda University of Japan.” – Wataru

Gary Chan – History graduate from the University of

Durham,UK

Gary Chan joined Tenby Schools to complete his IGCSE programme. After his Sixth Form studies in Negeri Sembilan, Kevin joined the University of Durham, UK, where he graduated in 2015 with a degree in History. He is currently doing a Diploma in TESL at Nottingham University (KL).

“I was very happy to be invited to give a series of talks to our Sixth Formers on “The Impact of the Enlightenment” which

is my favorite area of research. After completing my diploma studies, I hope to teach history – my passion.” – Gary Chan

Choo Wan Yann and Tan Yean Yu, both of Cohort 10, are now studying at QilIn University (KL). Yean Yu is studying International Business while Choo Wan Yann is doing Chinese Language studies.

“We came to Tenby Sixth Form from two of Ipoh’s

leading national schools. We could have gone to Form Six at our national schools but we chose Tenby Sixth Form Ipoh because of the wonderful mix of Malaysian and international students. Tenby is also the melting pot where students from many different schools in Malaysia get to meet in the sixth form. The

time we spent at Tenby Ipoh was really fun and learning for life.” – Wan Yann and Yean Yu

Ipoh Schools Get a Taste of “Othello”

The Sixth Formers of Cohort 13 recently

completed their drama outings in the

Kinta Valley with a grand finale

performance of “Othello” at Universiti

Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kampar.

The final performance was staged in the Auditorium of the university to a class of 450

undergraduates and lecturers who were enthralled by the polished drama performance

by the Sixth Formers.

“The audience were truly appreciative and supportive,” reports Emily Wong who co-

directed the performance with classmate Tan Ee Wei. “The performance was followed by

an interactive session with the audience where we shared our experiences of our theatre

practices.”

Prior to the staging at UTAR, the Sixth Formers staged the play for Tenby International

Secondary School, SM Tenby Ipoh as well as for the SMK St Michael, Ipoh and SMK

Methodist Girls Ipoh.

“It was a powerful publicity drive for Tenby Schools Ipoh particularly for our Sixth Form.”

commented co-director Tan Ee Wei. “I have no doubt that our drama performances are a

powerful draw for students and parents. It is a facet of the Sixth Form which puts our

school on the national map as a centre of excellence in drama.”

THE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES DEBATES 2/2016

Tenby Schools Ipoh will once again play host to the bi-annual debating Olympiad in the Kinta Valley when twenty four debating teams from the state’s schools will be vying for the debating

championship.

First organized in 2010, the Global Perspectives Debates are a much sought-after fiesta of words and wit that bring together debate enthusiasts from schools in the Kinta Valley.

Flashback to GP Debates I held in March 2016. A gathering of the Kinta Valley’s budding

orators!

This round of debates will be held on Friday 23rd – Saturday 24th September 2016.

“The debates will be organized by students and for students,” states Emily Wong who as Shadow-President of the Sixth Form is also the Convener of the debates. “This gathering is an

event- management challenge for the Tenby Sixth Form. We have to deploy our students not only as judges and chairpersons but have also to manage customer service, food and transport for the participants.”

Page 31: Newsletter No. 122 September 2016

The following are the schools which have confirmed their participation:

1 Tenby Schools Ipoh 2 SMK Ave Maria Convent,Ipoh 3 SMK Main Convent,Ipoh 4 SMK Sam Tet, Ipoh 5 SM Poi Lam Independent School,Ipoh 6 Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman,Ipoh

The debates will be based on the British Parliamentary format where each debate session is a four-cornered verbal battle on topics of global interest among them:

1 “This House believes that democracy has failed.”

2. “This House believes that the Olympic Games no longer reflect their ideals.”

3 “This House believes that social networking sites are doing more harm than good.”

4. “This House resolves that the death penalty should be imposed on terrorists.”

The topics for the semi-finals and final will be issued one hour before debating time.

PAST GP DEBATES STALWARTS SPEAK.........................

Past GP debates stalwarts (L to R) Justin Loke, Bryan Simm and

Balasubramaniam Ravi Shankar ( all of Cohort 12)

Page 32: Newsletter No. 122 September 2016

Excerpts of our interview with the trio:

Why does our school promote the Global Perspectives Debates (GDP)?

“The school sees the GP Debates as a social community responsibility to promote debating and intellectual awareness among young people in Ipoh. It is also an opportunity for students of different schools to get together in a spirit of fellowship and to interact in the English language.”

What is so unique about the GPD?

“The fact that there are four teams engaged in debating a topic creates greater verbal crossfire and gives the speakers a chance to debate more spontaneously than in other two-sided debates.

The debaters are also allowed to raise a point while the incumbent speaker is in mid-speech. This contributes to the fun and excitement of the debate.”

Why is debating important to students, especially to the Sixth Formers?

“We all need to hone our presentation and communicational skills in English. Many of our A-level examination questions are essentially debate-type presentations which require us to look at an issue from a variety of angles. This skill is best developed in and through debates. “

Why is it a challenge for the Sixth Form Students?

“It is a major event management exercise for the sixth formers. We have around 100 participants from eight schools. We have to project a positive image of our alma mater – a centre of mutual respect, courtesy and hospitality where English is widely spoken and where learning in a context of fellowship is enjoyed by all. We also have to manage the logistics of running debates concurrently at six venues. This is only possible when we have a core team of well-trained and committed student judges, chairpersons and venue secretaries. The debates are adjudicated almost entirely by student judges except in the semi-finals and finals where we have an independent panel of external judges. “

All parents and students of Tenby Schools Ipoh are cordially invited

to attend the debates which will be held as per the following

schedule:

Friday 23rd September 2016 2.30 pm – 6.30 p.m.

Saturday 24th September 2016 8.30 a.m. – 6.30 p.m.
