SRC 1960s Token Day

On Thursday 15th August, 2019 the SRC hosted their 1960s Token Day and what a memorable day it was!

Students, staff and parents were dressed up in retro clothes and had a great time listening to some 60s classic songs. There was a huge selection of 60s activities like Twister, Jacks, Elastics, Ring-Toss and Can Knock Down, and the fairy bread making was a favourite.

Everyone got to enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch and perhaps a cake or two from the cake stall. There was also some great handicrafts and plants on sale at the parent stalls.

All money raised from the day will go towards Creative Arts resources at our school. A huge thank you to all the parents, staff and students who helped on the day, whether it was donating cakes, cooking on the BBQ, creating the music playlist or helping at the cake stall.

Congratulations SRC on a successful and fun event! Mrs Lydia Ignacz

What’s been happening in preschool this term?

Preschool RED

So far this term, we have been adding to the aesthetics of the preschool by incorporating the children’s ideas. We asked the children how we could make our book corner comfy and cosy, with some ideas including adding a tree, hanging dragon lanterns, decorating with flowers, adding soft toys and providing blankets. Together we created a big tree using a range of recycled items and real tree branches to transform the children’s ideas into reality.

An interest in sea creatures, particularly sharks, and the ocean in general has started to emerge. This was based on one of the children’s questions when they asked “What do you think the biggest shark is? It’s a megalodon!”. We transformed our science table into an ocean exploration table with the addition of the world globe, shells, sea creatures, images and size charts of sharks and a sensory tray. We used our scientific thinking and mathematical skills to create an ocean in a bottle – we discovered that oil and water do not mix! Well done preschool!

Preschool BLUE

We have been showing more interest and curiosity in “things that grow” after observing that the carrot seeds and rocket seedlings that we planted in the preschool vegetable garden have been growing! After reading the book Oliver’s Vegetables we decided to explore some other seeds, leading to our ongoing experiment of attempting to sprout an avocado seed. We discussed that some food items can sprout from a clipping when the vegetable is placed in water, not soil, and brainstormed some items that we would like to put to the test. The children came up with many ideas, finally deciding to experiment with blueberries, carrot, cucumber and an onion. I wonder which one will grow?

We have also started to investigate families, particularly babies, as several families have or will soon be welcoming, a new baby to the family. We read the book Guess the Baby, where Miss Danni showed us a photo of an unknown baby, asking us to guess who it was. We realised that we were all babies once and this photo was Miss Danni! We would love for our families to bring in a photo of their preschool child when they were a baby so we can create a “guess the baby” wall, just like the story!

We loved using the scales during group time where we could explore mathematical concepts such as big and small and heavy and light, and used our developing counting skills. Great job preschool!

REMINDER FOR ALL FAMILIES: Please ensure your child has a sun-safe hat at preschool every day, even in cooler weather. All children must have a broad brimmed hat for outdoor play.

ANZ Hot Shots Todd Woodbridge Cup

Lalor Park Public School has spent the last few years being taught how to play tennis through the Hot Shots tennis program and this year we decided to enter a tennis competition designed for beginner players.

On Monday, August 12th, some students from our 3/4 class attended the ANZ Hot Shots Todd Woodbridge Cup (TWC). The students played five rounds before scores were totalled with the winner of the pool games progressing to the semi-finals and then finals. There were seven schools and almost 300 students competing for the chance to win and then to represent our region in the Hot Shots TWC progressive competition.

Our eight students; Aidan, Angel, Blessica, Cooper, Cory, Deana, Natalia and Shajfrie played outstandingly. After playing five rounds of tennis these students placed first in their pool, allowing them to progress to the semi-finals. While our students lost their semi-finals match they were awarded third place.

The exceptional result was a consequence of their never give up approach to each game. The students should be commended for their sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the tournament and humbly displaying Lalor Park Public School pride.

Congratulations!
