Dear Parents/Guardians,

This year we commemorate that 100 years ago at 11.00am on the 11th November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. The first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilization of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. We pray for and remember those who served and died in all wars. Our students will lay a wreath this Sunday and we will have a small service in each homeroom.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Our Year 11 students commence their examinations on Monday November 26th and finish on Friday November 30th. Our Year 10 students commence their examinations on Monday the 19th of November and conclude on Friday the 23rd of November A timetable of examinations has been forwarded to all students.

HEADSTART commences for all 2019 VCE students on Monday December 3rd. It is a requirement that all students attend each day of the HEADSTART Program. This year’s HEADSTART timetable will be a combination of students’ VCE classes and student wellbeing sessions to prepare our students for their VCE program in 2019.

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING

The Front Office has exit forms for students not returning in 2019. These forms need to be completed, signed and returned to allow us to offer places to other students, finalise our classes for next year and complete transfers to other schools.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to staff member Cathy van Dyk on the recent death of her mother, Monica Breen and to the Kemp family on the recent death of Bev Threlfau, Grandmother of Rachel (Yr 11). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to staff members, Jenna Argall, on a further addition to her family, a handsome young son, Baxter and to Lynne Taig, on the safe arrival of her grand daughter Adeline.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

benefits. Easy sale process where buyers will contact the seller direct to finalise the sale. You will have access to a complete list of second hand items linked to our college by all users of the website. Books can be listed (and searched) by Title, Author or ISBN code for accurate identification. Many other items in addition to uniform and books can be listed using this Sustainable School Shop website. There is an easy to follow ‘Guide’ instruction sheet available once you log in. Our PTF Group receives a small donation as part of each successful trade through this website, which in turn

goes toward a benefit of the students here at St Brigid’s College.

GENERAL NEWS

CAMBODIA EXCITING TIMES!!

A number of Year 12 students from St Brigid’s College have once again chosen to make a difference and participate in the Rustic Pathways Cambodia trip in late November. Through service work, adventure travel and cultural immersion, the alternative schoolies program allows the students to explore unique parts of the world in a meaningful way. This week was the pre-departure meeting where Zandy Marcus from Rustic Pathways outlined the final arrangements for the trip. It is an exciting time for the students and staff member Ms Kara Gough who will be travelling with the students. We look forward to their updates when they get to Cambodia.

VALUABLE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY Thursday 15th November

Once again the year 10 students will be participating in the Mock Interview program to be held on Thursday 15th November. In preparation the students have been required to choose a job position, write a job application letter and current resume. In class they have also covered job seeking skills, the employability skills and the importance of presentation and preparation. As part of their studies in Pathways to the Future we have addressed Jobs of the Future and Current Labour Market information.

Australian data from the Foundation for Young Australians indicate that 50 % of 25 year olds are not working fulltime and two of the barriers identified by young Australians (25%) was a lack of career management skills- poor job seeking and interviewing skills and not enough work experience (75%). For further information, please refer to The Work Reality Research on the Foundation for Young Australians website: https://www.fya.org.au/

The Mock Interviews are group interviews. The panel members conducting the interviews are representatives from Skillinvest, MADEC, MAS Experience, Axis Employment, LLEN, WDEA, Bunnings and the YMCA.
