PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome Back

On-Site Works

We have had a number of jobs completed over the holiday period. With many, more projects taking place over the next 12 months.

NAPLAN

From May 13th – 17th, Year 3 and 5 students will sit the NAPLAN Test. This is a national test for all students across Australia and this year at Wedge Park, we will be doing ours online. If you are a parent of a child in Year 3 or 5 you will receive further information. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher or Sara McKee.

Year 6/7 Transition

All parents of students in Year 6 should have already received notification about choosing a Secondary School for 2020. Please ensure the form is returned by the due date even if they have secured a place at a Catholic or Independent School (there is a separate section for this). If you would like to know which secondary school you are zoned to, please log onto the below website, or check with our school office. www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au

2020 Enrolment

We have now started our 2020 enrolment process. Can I please ask all existing families who have a child of school age next year, to collect an enrolment pack from our office, complete, and return it to the school office as soon as possible. If you know of prospective parents who would like to enrol their child at our school in 2020, please encourage them to call the office to find out about enrolments, alternatively you can look on our website for the details about enrolments and school tours.

Wet Day Timetable Games

With the colder, wet weather now upon us, students will be spending more time in the classroom when we have wet day timetables. To help pass the time and keep the students amused, school is in need of pre-loved board games eg: Snakes & Ladders, Chinese Checkers, Trouble and Guess Who etc. In addition, jig saw puzzles and card games. All donations will be gratefully accepted.

ANZAC Day Assembly

On Wednesday last week, the School Captains led a lovely ceremony for ANZAC Day. They read out messages and played the Last Post, asking us to bow our heads and remember the soldiers who died fighting for our country. It was a great way to help our students understand the importance of the ANZAC Day holiday on April 25th each year and reflect on what they have because of what the soldiers did. Thank-you to Mr Payne who supported the School Captains, who all did an amazing job. Each grade made an Art piece for the ceremony and these were displayed in the gym. Thank you to Xavier Watson and his family, who represented our school at the Dawn Service, placing a wreath at the Melton Cenotaph on behalf of the school. Thank-you Watson family for your early start and for representing Wedge Park PS so proudly.

YEAR 4 EXCURSION On Monday, the 29th April, 110 students from Year 4 went on an excursion to visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was a fantastic experience for all involved, as students were given an exclusive behind the scenes tour of one of our city’s greatest landmarks. Not only did they learn a lot about the MCG and its history, but students also got to walk out on the oval, visit the club rooms, sit at the microphones in the media room and watch cricket players train in the nets under the MCG. As well as the tour, students visited the National Sports Museum and saw a collection of rare and unexpected memorabilia, which embraced the history of cricket, football, the Olympics, Horse Racing and more in Melbourne. Students were very curious and asked lots of questions about some artefacts, ranging from an enlarged horse’s heart and skeleton, female jockeys to holograms which featured Shane Warne. After visiting the Sports Museum, our Year 4 students also enjoyed the Games on Area, where they were introduced to a range of physical tasks which included archery, cycling, sprint racing, soccer, football and cricket skills. During this time, there was lots of laughter, interest and puffed out children. Before returning to school, the Year 4s briefly walked to the Fitzroy Gardens, taking in the scenery and sights of the surrounding city landscape. During this time, students made the most of the great weather, played chasey games on the grass and jumped around in all of the autumn leaves which had fallen on the ground. Overall, it was a great day and supported the Year 4 Investigations topic of ‘Our Place in Australia’, as most of the students now have a deeper understanding towards the importance of sport in our capital city and are now able to recognise several of its iconic landmarks.

SCHOOL CHAPLAIN Hello Wedge Park Families, My name is Ellie Priest and I have started this term as the School Chaplain. I studied at Victoria University and graduated last year with my Bachelor of Youth Work. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, listening to music and going to the beach. I love animals and have two cats and two guineapigs at home. I look forward to meeting with you over the remainder of the year.

DOJO’S It’s great to see students names filling up our tree with their named leaves. We have also had some students receive 50 Dojo points. Keep up the great effort everyone.

OSHCLUB

Hello Families, Welcome to Term 2! This term we have created our new STEM space in our Osh room. We plan to bring in and implement STEM activities and learning opportunities for the children throughout the term. This means bringing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics into our play and experiences. We decided to bring this into our service as we believe the children were looking to engage in different things such as science experiments, sensory play, construction fun and more. This space is also very convenient for the upcoming STEM night at school on the 22nd May. We are excited to take part in the night as the children can share their experiences they have at OSHClub, with their peers and families. We would love to get some feedback on this from our families, so please feel free to let us know how your children are finding the program. Important Reminders: How to Enrol: An online OSHClub enrolment must be completed via our website (oshclub.com.au) prior to your child’s first attendance. If you require any assistance with this process, please feel free to phone us at the program so we can help you further. Making or Cancelling a Booking: Once enrolled, bookings can be made online up to 24 hours prior to the commencement of the session for before and after school care. Late bookings can only be made by calling our Customer Service and Billing Team on 1300 395 735. If you are having trouble getting through on the phone, the email address is [email protected]. Late Booking and No-Show Fees: It is extremely important you book your children in to the service and inform us of any last-minute bookings, as we need to ensure we have the correct child to staff ratio to ensure your children get the best possible care. Bookings made within 24hours will incur an additional charge of $4.00 per session, per child. If you have booked your child in for a session and they no longer need to attend due to change in circumstances, it is important that you inform the service asap to avoid a no-show fee of $5 per session, per child. You can contact the service on 0419 178 976 and we look forward to seeing you and your children at OSHclub. Have a great week! Allison and Zoe.
