Mission to MarsOver the next 8 weeks grade 4 & 5 will be following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on ‘Mission to Mars’. The big idea surrounding the unit is that one day, humans may need to leave the Earth and settle on another planet. Mars is our most likely destination – a world that we believe once harbored life and, with our intervention, may do so again in the future. During this unit we will be focusing on Science, Geography, Technology, History, Physical Education, Society and International goals.

On Tuesday, November 20th, all grade 4 & 5 students took part in the Mission to Mars Entry point. It was an exciting event that had students moving! In the Entry point the children experienced ‘astronaut training’ in preparation for their mission to Mars. The students worked in teams throughout the afternoon to complete a number of fitness and mental challenges. Each challenge tested them in different ways. Students learned, if they want to go to Mars then they have to complete these challenges and prove they were ready to be demonstrate the characteristics of an astronaut!

Computer OlympiadWe, Mr. Gurcan and Francisco, were in Turkmenistan for the 4th International Computer Olympiad from September

11th and 15th.

More than 30 countries and from 5 continents students and their teachers

attended that competition. It was supported by Turkmenistan Education Ministry and

Turkmenistan President.

It was a very wonderful opportunity for us to meet students from other countries of world and very enlightening to see their

projects. The Olympiad had 5 categories: Short Film, programming, hardware control, computer

art and digital content.

Our project was called Learning HTML, which is in digital content category. The

question we had before we started project was how to help kids learn design a web

page very easily. Our web site gives step by step instruction to have a web site in

addition to some animations to support this instruction.Francisco had a bronze medal

and $300 award from the competition.

It was a really good opportunity for us to be there. Other than competing with their

projects, students made a lot of new friends from different countries and cultures. We also enjoyed Turkmen foods, traditions,

music a lot. We will continue to take part in different competitions such as Lego League and computer Olympiads. We also would like to thank to our school because of its

support.

RIS students are strong, creative and adventurous individuals.

Those four words, from Standing on the Edge of Time, embody what we at Rainbow are trying to teach our students. As members of the 21st century it is important for them to remember they are constantly moving forwards .Ellis Island, a musical written by

Cheryl E. Kemeny, was chosen as our Winter Musical because of i t s educat iona l content , charac ter education awareness, and cultural acceptance.

These opening lyrics set the tone for this epic adventure. Set in 1907 (the peak immigration year), the show tracks the lives of several immigrant families and individuals as they trek to America, some escaping from tyranny, through storm and illness, in search of the American dream of liberty and prosperity. The visions and anxieties of characters such as Irish revolutionaries, Swedish, Italian, Hungarian, a Russian anarchist escaping pogroms, are craftily interwoven to climax at the Ellis Island immigration office. This epic show gives youngsters a sense of the joys, fears and hard sh ip s tha t our immig ran t forefathers experienced. This show was written for the centennial celebration of Ellis Island, and was performed there on July 4th, 1992 and 1997, for the mayor of New York and the police and fire commissioner on an outdoor stage, with sailboats and the NYC skyline as a background!

Our PTA is up and running! This years president is Ms. Hansen, mother of Oliver (g2) and Emil (g1).

The objective this year is to help the school build an enjoyable and fruitful educational environment by facilitating a cooperative relationship between the parents and the school. The PTA is essential in school growth and development because it facilitates the teacher - student - parent relationship. Without parent involvement, feedback and opinions the school can not move forward in its development.

Grade 1 is fast approaching our exit point for 'Hooray....let's go on holiday! The places people go.' as a class we have a variety of personal holidays we have gone on, these make for great discussions :) We have explored time and how holidays have changed from our ancestors to present and how holidays might look in the future. We have talked about the positive and negative effects tourism has on a holiday destination. Most recently we have researched the natural and man-made wonders of the world. Students made posters showcasing their 'wonder'. Monday we have our exit point that is being led by our learning buddies in Milepost 3 from 9:00-10:25), parents are welcome. We are continuing our exciting year with IPC.

Grade 1 NewsGrade 2 and 3 students have been learning about taking care of different parts of their body. We looked at various way to do this, from not smoking and exercising to care for our lungs. Students learned about the food pyramid and vitamins found in food so that we can feed our body properly. Now this week students have been learning how to care for their teeth! Grade 2 and 3 students completed an experiment to see what happens when we don’t brush or teeth properly every day. We left hard boiled eggs in coca cola and water overnight, then brushed them with toothbrushes and tooth paste the next day. Students tried to see how clean they could make them after being stained.

How do you care for your body?

RIS has a fun week in spirit week! By: Hyung-wook Ku

Have you seen people wearing pajamas in school? At R.I.S. All students had faun week during Spirit Week. It was to show how much spirit a class has. It happened on October 29th to November 2nd. There were days called: Color day, Crazy Hat/Hair day, Costume day, Twin day, and Pajama day. Alexander Kwon said “My favorite day was Pajama day because it was fun and comfortable.” Latham Ratnam said, “Mine was costume day because I had fake blood on my face.” RIS students even got rewards. Sprit Week was fun!

It was our very first spirit week held in R.I.S. so I was doubtful if we could pull if off.. however.. Our first Spirit Week was amazing! Monday was class color day and everybody showed school spirit by their class colors. Tuesday was crazy hat and hair day and there were some outstanding hair styles such as Joshua Seo’s hedgehog hair! Wednesday was costume day and out school turned into somewhat movie location set. There were princesses, Spiderman, vampire, mine craft, black angel, cat, turtle and ground-breaking nerd by Tami! Also, Ms. Maher scared the little ones by putting on a The Day of the Dead Dolls make up! Phew, it was scary to have The Day of the Dead Doll as a teacher. Thursday we had twin and triplet day and some twins dressed exactly same enough

to confuse their friends! Azra and Berra looked like sisters! Another twins Aleena and her sister Gulmeena showed their sisterly hood by dressing head to toe exactly the same! Teachers also turned into twins this day and it was so fun! Everybody looked the same I could not tell who was who. Last day of spirit week was the long-awaited Pajama day! We could sleep in little bit more than other days and that was great enough, but when I walked into school it was hilarious! Teachers and students all wearing their pajamas and they seemed they could fall asleep where ever. Ms. Sawlor was wearing her blue doggy fluffy PJs, but she was teaching very seriously. Pranu and Johnny looked very comfortable too. Will was wearing his soft top and bottom matching PJs and I bet he was half sleeping that day!

That was brief recollection of our fantastic spirit week! Ms. MacRae remembers the spirit day as 10/10 day and Hanie in grade 8 said, “Spirit Week was so fun” and all the students shouted that we could have another one next year! Thanks everybody again for showing your school spirit! It was great!
