FAMILY PROMISE RESIDENTS Approximately 15 residents and a few friends of Family Promise participated in the Recycling Workshop held on Oct 7. The workshop was great fun and many thanks to Sherry Ellison, Kelli Kerns, Marianne Maxwell, and Heather White who assisted.

October 12 – Regular monthly meeting. Our speaker, Robert Martinez, told us all about Heirloom Bulbs, including different varieties of Crinum, Lycoris, Hippeastrum, Hymenocallis and Zephrantes. He brought bulbs to sell, many of which went to new homes with happy GC members!

October 13 – One World Flower Show See full Report on pages 3 & 4.

October 21 – City of CS 80th Birthday

See last page for Jane’s comprehensive report and additional photos.

  • October 31 – District V Fall Meeting Michele, Jane, Khris and Helen traveled to Georgetown from Navasota/College Station for this meeting, Deana traveled from Austin. Historically the Fall meeting is “minimal official business” just fun, and this was no exception. We had a program on growing gourds in the morning, and a session on decorating them in the afternoon. Food was delicious, provided by Violet Crown club of Austin. The sunken garden at the venue was in full bloom and full of butterflies, and Zone II has a new “World Gardening Club Member” – me!!! No room for pictures, but here’s one of the costume finalists from our zone: Fourth from left is the overall winner, Sarah

The 2018 A&M GC Flower Show “One World” was held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, from 1-3pm, free and open to the public. There were quite a variety of horticulture specimens despite the unusual timing of the show, and the winners of the top exhibitor awards were scattered among a number of people (see below). The big winners of the show were Judy Schafer for her design in the Class Water, which won the Award of Design Excellence, Suzanne Milstead for her Aloysia which won both an Arboreal Award and the Horticulture Excellence Award, and Helen Quinn, for her educational exhibit, Global Partners Running Waters, which won the Educational Exhibitors Award. Congratulations to all who won and many thanks to all who helped with the Family Promise Sponsored Group Workshop on Recycling on October 7, the staging on October 12, and the extensive entry, classification and placement process on October 13. The Flower Show Chairman, Heather White, is also grateful to Family Promise, Rose Rock Capital Group, and the Restoration Church for the opportunity to partner with them and stage the show at their facility. Extensive photos are available on the Facebook and Web pages.

November 2 at Richard Carter Park.

Speakers have been contacted and a

program created for the upcoming Arbor

Day celebration and Tree Dedication at

Richard Carter Park on November 2, 2018

at 11:00 A.M. The Pecan Tree selected by

    Stephen Richardson, CS Parks Operation

Manager, will be planted prior to the actual

dedication and we will have a ceremonial

turning of the mulch at the tree site following

the program at the Gazebo in the park. We

are recognizing Margaret Ann White and Dr.

John Robert Ellison, deceased members of

    the A&M Garden Club.

I wish to thank the members of the Arbor Day Committee who are serving with me for

this event. They are Cheryl Lewis who will present the Arbor Day Statement and History and Sherry Ellison who has been the contact with the Mayor's Office and with the Parks and Recreation Department of College Station. Judy Schafer, A&M Garden Club Member, will present the Indian Legend of the Pecan Tree. I anticipate this program should be completed by 11:30 A.M. All Members of the A&M Garden Club, and their guests, are encouraged to attend this program.

    .VP-Yearbook – Ann G.

We will be making Christmas Snowflakes from toilet paper rolls to give to the residents on the Meals on Wheels Program at Crestview Nursing Center in early December. Instructions were emailed previously - if we can individually get the snowflakes constructed, glued, and painted prior to the Nov 27 craft workshop, we will be able to finish the glue/glitter and tie on the ribbon hangers.

I will have a sign up sheet for the workshop on Nov 27 at the November 9th Garden Club Meeting.

fast! We hope to receive some pictures

    soon.

The Gardens and with our Junior Master

    Community Events – Jane C.

College Station's 80th Celebration was on

Sunday Oct 21, at Richard Carter Park,

with over 125 people attending. Beautiful

weather and a festive air added to the

celebration. Jane & Bob got a great picture

at the welcome display. CS's birthday cake

and mini cupcakes added to the celebration.

    (BB2Cake)

A&M GC was a major factor in the success

of the event, with six "educational" stations.

Thanks to the many GC members who

helped - 1. GC Membership Table - President

Heather White staffed the table with

    membership information and seeds.

Thanks to Heather and Judy for additional

seeds given away at our membership

table. The basket of seeds by Heather

    featured historic preservation and Plant

    America, with a monarch butterfly.

    2 & 3. Plant Beds - Sherry E.

    (CS14aPlanting), Sherry M., Helen. Q &

    Carmen B.

    4. Wreaths near Interpretative Center - Kelli

parts of the celebration. You were the

    roots/backbone an outstanding community

    event. Our tables were great!!!

  • Youth Contests. Jane C.

Poems from 53 - 4th graders at Spring

Creek Elementary, one 7th grader home

schooled, and one essay from Bryan HS

student were judged on Thursday, Oct 25.

The poem theme was "Pop Goes the Seed"

with winning 4th grade poems on "Growing

Up", "Pop Goes the Seed," "Dandelion." and

"Fireworks of Seeds." Winning 7th grade

was "Genesis." Winning 12th grade essay

was "Impact of Bottled Water”. Jane C.,

Poetry Chair and Marianne Maxwell, Youth

Chair, judged, along with Brazos Writers

Karen Riedel, Keven Pearce and Benita

    Clark; and Retired Teachers Eugenia

Williams and Carolyn Parsons (both also

A&M GC members). Many, many thanks to

    them.

    Judging Poems:

Seated - Carolyn Parsons, Benita Clark,

    Eugenia Williams, Marianne Maxwell.

Standing Keven Pearce, Karen Riedel, Jane

    Cohen

Thanks to Eugenia Williams for special

treats to the judges. The "school teacher"

and gracious Garden Club member in her

made it special for the judges with a basket

of paper clips, binder clips, and assorted

supplies. One of the judges asked about the

A&M GC and plans to visit a meeting. One

of the youth entries and her Mom plan to

visit a meeting and possibly join.

Additional info about the Poetry Contest -

Poems could be traditional verse, acrostics,

    blank verse, cinquains, diamond poems,

limerick or Haiku, and do not have to rhyme.

Help next year and learn more about poetry.

With 55 entries, we needed two more

Garden Club judges. If we have this many

entries next year, we may need more

Garden Club members to help pre judge

  • some of the entries, to cut down on amount

of time needed to select the top 4 poems in

each grade. Help recognize the youth

and learn more about poetry, the youth

awards program, judging, etc. And, we do

    want more entries.

Judy Anderson was traveling, but was

Essay Chair and received a 12th grade

student's essay on "Impact of Bottled Water

on the Environment and the Water Supply"

and got it to us for the judging.

Thanks to the other Youth Committee

    members who helped promote the

youth contests - Khris Thurmond, Carole

    Hopp and Barbara Linick and

    others who expressed interest.

    Coffee time
