November Newsletter 2018
Ahoy OSC Members
Our sailing season is in full swing now having completed our first Rum Race and the Around the lake Regatta successfully. We had an excellent October Monthly meeting at Mark & Bobbie Ciraco’s to continue in great style our Fall Meetings schedule. Word from Yacht Town Nebraska is that T.H.E. Admiral is very pleased with the actions of one of our Co-Commodores, we should be hearing about that at our next monthly meeting.
Congratulations to the winners and participants at the Around the Lake Regatta. The light and variable winds made for very challenging sailing. Everyone seemed to have a good time when all was said and done.
One of our best parties is coming up with Margaratville at Lynn & Ed Sim’s on Saturday November 17th, plus Rum Race #2 prior to the Margaratville party.
Let’s continue our 2018 OBRS celebration at VKI Japanese Steakhouse with a good turnout.
Wishingyoufairwindsandgoodsailing...................
Your Commodore,
Bob Cole

2018 The Fall Rum Races have started!!Not too late to participate … ( Next 2 are Nov 17th & Dec 2nd )
If you haven’t sailed in the Rum Races you are really missing out ! It is a great time to hone your skills in an informal competitive way and camaraderie environment. You get to shake down your rigging and practice with crew if you have a sailboat and being crew if you don’t have a boat. There is a lot to practice on the shore in prepping as well as gaining the experience of the skills on the water and learning from your mistakes. The skippers fee is $5 and crewing is free and that is for the entire fall season.
Oh, Did we forget to tell you? The $5 lets the Skippers draw on the raffle for the big bottle* .… and surprise!
This fall … 1st, 2d & 3rd Place boats get bottles !
* Please note: A boat that has paid the $5 fee has to only sail once to be in on the drawing

Sunset Harbor Challenge / Around the Lake Regatta Jim Edens / Racing Commodore / CommentsIn the days leading up to the OSC Round the Lake Race, expectations were high because the weatherman was predicting sunny, but not blistering hot conditions, and wind from about 5 to 9 knots. The weatherman was right about the general conditions, but not so much with regard to the wind. By the time of the last start, the wind was closer to 0 to 1 knot. Fortunately for the earlier starters, there was a bit of wind early, which seemed to follow the early starters around the lake. Those early starters benefited greatly from the early conditions and did a great job of taking advantage of the light wind. Later starters were much less fortunate.
In spite of the light wind a total of 20 boats took off around the lake with the first start at noon. The race was the usual pursuit-type start. At the 11am skipper’s meeting there was some concern regarding the starting sequence, but the start went off without incident and right on time (great job Race Committee). Because of these concerns, the start was the primary focus of the Race Commodore. As it turned out, there were other issues to worry about. For example, Mark No. 6, which was at the north end of the lake drifted into water where the anchor was unable to reach the bottom. Not only did competitors have difficulty finding the missing mark (although the on-water support boats did a good job notifying the competitors), but the mark drifted across the lake to the area of Mark No. 9 (southwest part of the lake). Depending on when you arrived at Mark 9, Mark 6 may have been to the east (early) or the west (later) of Mark 9, making it difficult to determine which mark to round. This actually resulted in a protest, which was resolved by recognizing that it was not practical to come to a conclusion regarding which mark was which at the time of the rounding in question. Both skippers were ultimately awarded first place in their class and everyone was understanding of the resolution and the uncertainty around making a definitive determination of the rounding.
The race also went beyond the 4-hour time limit by 40 seconds, although the elapsed time for many finishers was actually less than 4 hours due to the pursuit type start. After a brief discussion with the participants, it was agreed to present trophies to the finishers in spite of going over the time limit. The results are provided below. Harpoon Class: 1st Place - Paul Straub / Harpoon 5.2 2nd Plce - Ed Sims / Harpoon 5.2 Mono-Hull Class: 1st Place - Randy Pawlowski / Catalina 22 (tied) 1st Place - James Allister / Catalina 22 Sport 3rd Place - Mike Loughlin Multi-Hull Class: 1st Place - Jim Edens / Nacra 6.0 2nd Place - Philip Styne / Weta Trimaran Planing Class: 1st Place - Geoffrey Moehl / MC Scow 2nd Place - Olivier Fleury / Raider 16

Come Join the Fun on Crescent Lake We have done this as a club for several years now ! The 3 Bananas Restaurant is in the quaint little town of Crescent City which sits on the western edge of Crescent Lake. Bear Island is in the lake not far off from the boat ramp and makes a fine focal point to use as reference for starting and ending our cruise around the lake. We have always been fortunate to have good wind on this lake and always build up a good thirst and appetite by the time we return to the There Bananas Pub & Restaurant. There are 2 launching areas. The one we use is 2 blocks south of the restaurant where the town water tower is located as it provides ample room for sailboat rigging, parking and convenient rest rooms. At this point in time, there are 3 sailboats planning to participate: Ed Sims’ -23’ Hunter, Art Twitchell’s - 22’ Catalina and Ross Martin’s - 21’ San Juan.Plan to get the boats to the parking lot by 10:30 am and get rigged up to launch for a nice sail on the lake. We will try to get back loaded and readied for 3 Bananas by 4:30. It is quite possible that it will be dark by the time we leave for home. To get on board one of these boats contact: Ed Sims (352-804-5876) , Art Twitchell (352-598-4468) or Ross Martine (352-693-8081) We welcome any other members who have a sailboat or motorboat to join us.

Yachtstown, Nebraska 309871 October 26, 2018 To: Co-commodores of the Ocala Beer & Rafting Society: It has come to the notice and attention of T.H.E. Admiral that members of your local chapter have been performed the Nautical Rafting activity recommended and required as members of the OBRS. T.H.E. Admiral is overwhelmingly pleased with all Co-commodores behavior pursuit consumption of the nectar of the God’s, “BEER”. This spirit of compliance is highly praise worthy and an honorable activity befitting true apostles of our Corinthian Creed. Based on and embedded in these efforts Special Recognition to all participating Co-commodores is here by bestowed. However, failure to RAFT and enjoy the picturesque setting of sky, water and land while enjoying the nectar of the God’s is a serious Gavel offense. It is only right and befitting that we search out these offenders and guide them back in the true ways of the OBRS. The worst offender shall have the Gavel bestowed upon them until the errors of their ways are corrected and witnessed. In the spirit of Corinthian revelry and licentiousness, you are hereby instructed and commanded to proceed with this search and Gravel presentation to said offender. Upon passing of the Gavel to a Co-commodore guilty of a nautical mishap said Co-commodore will be reinstated into good standing with OBRS. This shall be accompanied with a celebration in the manner befitting true apostles of our Corinthian Creed. Avoidance of this condition in the future is highly recommended by the Beer & Rafting Society International’s executive committee. Yours for Corinthian revelry and licentiousness, For T.H.E. Admiral,
Beer & Rafting Society International
