What a great time of year. We just finished a terrific Halloween, filled with goblins and ghouls,
and I hope that everyone received many more treats than tricks! And, on the near term horizon,
we already have Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday season approaching. While this is a
wonderful time to spend time with families and to celebrate, we also have to be extremely con-
scious of safety and of taking care of each other. As the world recently witnessed with the hor-
rible typhoon in the Phillipines, the weather can be vicious, and we all need to be prepared for
the worst – to start, we should all stock emergency cold weather packages in our vehicles, store
a few days of supplies in our homes, etc. Additionally, we are in the midst of an extremely diffi-
cult mission out here in the recruiting world. Our production numbers have increased, and we
are all forced to work harder and smarter. Our Chicago recruiters are doing a wonderful job,
and you should be proud of all their efforts. Please enjoy the next pages of the newsletter which
illustrate a sampling of their hard work. Also, please join us for our next monthly family tele-
conference on Wednesday, 4 December at 1900. We will discuss upcoming family events and
open the floor for any questions or issues. Thanks for all you do!

I Don’t Think My Recruiter Would Lie to Me
“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the
world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and
achievement. You are here to enrich the world and you impoverish yourself if
you forget the errand.”

Ernie Nieves knew he wanted to serve in the United States Military by the time he was
17. Initially slated to join the Marine Corps, he decided against it at the last minute. After seri-
ous consideration, and lengthy discussion with his wife, he decided not to become a Marine.
His personal values, those like loyalty and duty, imbued him with a passion for service. How-
ever, it was this same set of values that led him to the decision to put aside military service,
temporarily, and fulfill his commitments as a young family man. Ten years later Ernie Nieves
became Private Nieves, starting a familial trend. PVT Nieves joined the Army Reserve as a
21E Heavy Construction Equipment Operator. A 32 year old professional, Nieves had been
married and divorced and was now the primary bread winner and care provider for his kids. He
had enjoyed many personal and professional achievements and survived a number of hardships.
However, he had managed to juggle all these responsibilities and see through a decade old goal
of enlistment in the US military.
Three years after his enlistment Nieves met another public servant and she would be-
come a major part of his life. While, in the airport he had a chance encounter with a Chicago
Police Woman. He thought that he recognized her but wasn’t sure. The woman was off duty
and wearing civilian attire. Nieves asked her:
“Are you a cop?’’
“Yes.”
“Are you from Chicago’s 14th Precinct?”
“Yes. How do you know that?”
He wasn’t sure. He had lived in that area his entire life but was certain they had never
met. They definitely knew some of the same people but did not travel in the exact same social
circles. Nieves asked the woman her name. She told him it was Lourdes. He was stunned.
The chance encounter reminded him of a promise he had made to his mother more than twenty
years earlier. As a young man he told his mother that some day he would marry a woman with
the name Lourdes. Now, he was talking to a beautiful and engaging woman with that very
name. It was meant to be. A young man’s prophecy was fulfilled, a year later, when Ernie and
Lourdes became Mr. and Mrs. Nieves.

In 2010, now, SGT Ernie Nieves brought his and Lourdes’ son, Marco, to the North Ad-
dison Recruiting Station. The young man enlisted into the Active Duty Army as a 35F, Intelli-
gence Analyst. The family tradition continued when in December 2012 SGT Nieves’ son,
Elijah, enlisted in the Army as a 35F. SGT Nieves, between Marco’s and Elijah’s enlistment,
had done a tour in Afghanistan as a finance NCO. Upon his return, he stayed on active duty
status with the Army Reserves. However, he was constantly filling a temporary slot. In the
spring of 2013, the opportunity to gain permanent status in the Reserves presented itself. SGT
Nieves immediately seized it. He was to become a recruiter in Rockford, IL. However, SGT
Nieves would have to complete a six week long Recruiting School in FT Jackson, SC first.
While, in the Recruiter Course he was informed that he would be returning to the Chicago Re-
cruiting Company instead of going to Rockford. SGT Nieves, mission oriented as he is, did not
care where he was placed. He relished the opportunity and was determined to do his best. He
had been working, for years, to improve the lives of young men and women in his community.
He was certain that, with the backing of the US Army, he could do even more now. When he
returned to the Chicago Recruiting Battalion he was informed that he would be recruiting out of
the Addison Recruiting Center also known as the Chicago North Side Recruiting Center. He
thought nothing of it. He simply showed up for duty.
It was June when SGT Nieves showed up to the Addison Recruiting Center. It finally
dawned on him. This was the center that Marco and Elijah had enlisted out of. There were
more people, now that it had expanded from a station to a center. The faces in the center were
different, from when Marco had enlisted, but the facility was the same. He shook off the air of
sentimentality and got to work. He was introduced to the other Engagement Team members
and he was ready to get out and meet his market.
SGT Nieves returned to the Center at 1600 hrs. He had had a successful day. He had
gone out with other recruiters. He had seen some of the AO. He knew that he would soon be
improving his part of the world. At about that time Elijah walked in the recruiting office.
When he saw his father he was dumbstruck. Elijah, a permanent fixture at the Addison Center,
had come in to do Physical Training as he did every day. However, when he had joined the
Army the possibility of his dad being a Recruiter, let alone a Recruiter out of the same center
that he had enlisted, had not occurred to him as a possibility. Yet, somehow there he was. The
same stern face, which he had grown up, was now intensely evaluating his professional, not just
personal, conduct. He may have been young, less than half his father’s age, but he was mature
and just as mission oriented as patriarch. He completed PT that day and everyday for more than
a month afterward, preparing himself for his upcoming ship date.
On July 29, 2013 SGT Nieves volunteered for MEPS duty. His son, the one who had
always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, was going to ship to basic training and he was
going to be there to see it. Elijah completed all the final administrative actions required by
MEPS. It was now time to do his oath of enlistment. SGT Nieves was in the room. When the
oath was completed the guidance counselor congratulated PVT Nieves. He asked if he had any
questions. PVT Nieves flashed his familiar smile at his dad and said “No I don’t think my re-
cruiter would lie to me.” With that PVT Nieves was off, to become the third member of his

including the following:
Newborn care such as routine care in the hospital, circumci-
sion, and newborn screening as recommended by the American
Academy of Pediatrics.
History and physical examination and mental health assess-
ment.
Developmental and behavioral appraisal
Height and weight
Head circumference (through age 2)
Eye and vision screening by primary care provider at birth
and approximately 6 months of age
Audiology (hearing) screening before 1 month old (usually
performed during newborn care at hospital); additional audi-
ologic screening/testing is covered for infants at high risk for
hearing loss in accordance with American Academy of Pediat-
rics (AAP) and Joint Commission on Infant Hearing (JCIH)
guidelines
